About Nicholas
Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. He enjoys playing lots of Motown, funk, and jazz, but is proficient in Classical, Rock, and Blues as well. When not playing music (rarely), he is a Board member for the GivingBackPack Foundation which provides school supplies to underprivileged children. I hadn't played the trumpet in 30 years. My first lesson with Nicholas was like starting from scratch. He is very knowledgeable, polite, professional, and definitely patient. I feel that that homework Nicholas assigned was spot on. I'm playing better already after only two days. I would certainly recommend him to a friend.

Nicholas really tailored the lessons to what I needed. They weren't cookie-cutter lessons, and I appreciated that. He answered all the questions I had, and helped me understand some concepts that I never would have gotten just learning online. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.

Nicholas was very patient, took the time to write down information that was helpful (very helpful). Nicholas understood where I was in reference to me knowing nothing about the guitar and he is very knowledgeable with the music trade. He was very clear and kept things simple. I truly enjoy his instructions, can't wait for the next lesson.

I'm a very flexible teacher. Whatever you feel that you need to work on, we will work on. Currently, I am taking lessons from Steve Turre at Juilliard. He has performed with many jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and J.J. Johnson. If you're interested, I wouldn't mind teaching you some of the things I am learning here at Juilliard.

(Travelling will incur an extra fee.)

About Jeffery
Hi there! I am a 22-year-old trombonist and singer from New Orleans, LA. I graduated from The Juilliard School with my Bachelor's in Jazz Studies in May 2018, and I am returning to Juilliard to pursue my Master's. You can catch me working a LOT in the NY area as both a sideman and a leader of my own quintet.

I also play euphonium, tuba and some piano. I've performed/recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Mac Miller, John Legend, Solange, Jon Batiste, and more. I have studied privately/have great relationships with world-renowned trombonists such as Steve Turre, Joe Alessi, Elliot Mason, Delfeayo Marsalis and Wycliffe Gordon. I would be more than happy to share with you what I have learned (and continue to learn) from such amazing players.

It would be my pleasure to help you increase your musicianship! A
ll I ask is that you be honest with me as well as yourself. I love to learn equally as much as I love to teach, so book a lesson! (Ask about my group lesson rates, those are always a lot of fun too!) Let's learn from each other!

About PAUL
*UPDATED AVAILABILITY FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR*

Hi! My name is Paul. I graduated in 2016 from Arizona State University with my Master of Music in Performance. I am completing the final year of my D.M.A. program at Arizona State University.

I have almost a decade of teaching experience that ranges from private, one-on-one lessons to larger masterclasses. My private students have auditioned into numerous all-region and all-state ensembles.

My performance experience is quite varied. I was a tenured member of the Washington-Idaho Symphony on bass trombone for five years. I left to pursue my Masters degree from ASU. Other orchestral experience includes several Summer Pops concerts with the Great Falls Symphony, some featured artists such as Kansas and Charlie Daniels. I have spent several years playing in jazz bands, Jazz I from the Uni
versity of Idaho and Concert Jazz Band from ASU. In the spring of 2016, I performed with ASU's Concert Jazz Band at Highland Jazz Festival where we featured Wayne Bergeron and Andy Martin. Recent performances include Salt River Brass' " Made in America" program featuring trumpet soloist Rex Richardson, Phoenix Theatre's run of "Bullets Over Broadway," and performing with and conducting the Arizona State University Trombone Ensemble at the 2017 International Trombone Festival. In December 2017, I made my solo debut performing with Salt River Brass. I recently attended the 2018 Pokorny Seminar where I worked with numerous musicians including Tim Higgins (SFO), Jim Markey (BSO), Dr. Andrew Glendening (Host/RSO), and Gene Pokorny (CSO).

I miss Amber's piano lessons, which I discontinued only because our schedules no longer meshed. She made learning fun, gave me helpful memory tricks, and accommodated my needs as a beginning student, even though I am an adult. I was satisfied with my progress and long to take more lessons. Being able to play even simple pieces gave me great joy and added another dimension to my life. She has my recommendation.

I have been professionally trained by top notch musicians all across the U.S. including members of the Houston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. I bring a diverse and unique approach to improving the quality of playing in my students by drawing from what I have learned from all of my mentors, but personalizing it in a way that has proven to work for me, and in turn, hopefully you! I believe that a firm foundation in trombone playing is crucial to the development of a player, so emphasis on sound production, tone quality, breathing, and fundamentals are at the core of my teachings. If you want to see maximum improvement in minimal time, I'm your guy!

About James
I recently graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Music Performance where I studied under Chicago Symphony Bass Trombonist, Charlie Vernon, and Lyric Opera Trombonist, Mark Fisher. Prior to moving to Chicago for college, I lived and grew up in Houston, Texas where I studied under long time Houston Symphony Trombonist, John McCroskey, and current Orlando Philharmonic Trombonist, Joel Brown.

During my time in Chicago, I have performed with dozens of ensembles and organizations such as the Classical Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, the Salt Creek Chamber Orchestra, Lakeview Orchestra, and Windy City Winds, among others. I also won a two year position with The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the premiere training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony, and my appointment began in September of 2017 and will run through June of 2019.

I co
nsider my training and performance experiences here in Chicago to be instrumental in my philosophy when it comes to teaching the trombone. A strong fundamental basis to playing is something that I have focused on more and more over the years, and as time goes by, I notice an enormous difference in my consistency in playing. Developing a mastery of breathing techniques, tone quality, sound production, and lip slurs allows you to perform anything you have on your music stand at an exceptionally high level. My style of teaching gives you a strong foundation for your playing by honing in on the development of these fundamentals.

This isn't to say that we will not have time to work on repertoire as well! Every student should have SOMETHING to work towards at all times! Whether it be an upcoming audition, a recital, a concert, or just a performance for your parents, having deadlines and showing dedication in meeting them shows great discipline and allows you to track your progress in a very tactile manner. We will be able to take our strong foundation that we build together and apply it to your repertoire in a way that will revolutionize how you approach music!

He is always willing to go the extra mile, whether that means studying the part before rehearsals and practices or getting a group of friends together to learn the music we're playing. James is committed to bringing the best out in both his and his students' performances. I highly recommend James as a private instructor.

Professional experience performing on trombone alongside other trombone luminaries (eg. Wayne Wallace from Patois Records) dating back to 2013, and in instructing students as young as 11.

Within the first few lessons, you'll know to play with a full and beautiful sound, and as time goes on you'll be able to get around the instrument with confidence. I specialize in jazz (both big band and playing with a combo), and typically use the Arbans book or adaptations from Flexus to advance your progress.

I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Matthew
I'm a multi-instrumentalist and composer with two degrees earned concurrently from Indiana University--one a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences, the other a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the internationally renowned Jacobs School of Music.

Upon arriving in Chicago, I have taken on a role as the Director of Music at Marquette Park, where I serve as something between an artist-in-residence and a band director. On occasion, I travel out to New York City to take part in the BMI Jazz Composers' Workshop.

My instrumental ability has allowed me to take professional tours both nationally and internationally as a sideman (Durand Jones and the Indications, Indiana Jazz Exchange), and my writing for large ensemble has been featured by multiple groups (Sean Imboden Large Ensemble, Liberation Music Coll
ective, BMI Jazz Composer's Orchestra). My acumen as an instructor and music director has allowed me to become the Director of Music at Marquette Park on Chicago's South Side, providing city-subsidized instruction to a largely under-served population.

I'm very passionate about helping people realize their own internal goals, no matter how far off those goals may seem. I already feel we can work together to help you achieve them, and we haven't even met yet! My mix of academic training, professional experience, and natural affability make the learning experience easy, stress-free and fun.

I can teach you how to:
1) play trumpet
2) play trombone
3) play drums
4) understand and internalize music theory
5) improvise, from absolute beginner-level to professional-tier tips and tricks
6) write music for all sizes of ensembles (solo singer-songwriter to 18-piece big band)

Styles I've got professional experience playing: rock, funk, soul, R&B, jazz (combo), jazz (big band), and classical.

Let's learn together!

I am an experienced brass teacher specializing in trombone since 2004. I earned a degree in Music Education and Trombone from Roosevelt University in 2009 while studying with Jay Friedman of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I regularly play around the area and am principal trombone with the Illinois Brass Band. I'm passionate about trombone and brass pedagogy. I believe that producing a great sound is the most important part of brass playing with technical ability coming after consistent sound is produced. I love working with students young and old and instilling a passion for brass playing in them. I have taught trombone students as young as 9 and as old as 80 and tailor my lessons to suit the specific student's needs.

About Madelyn
I'm a professional trombone player that has played throughout the Midwest in a variety of styles. I have been teaching brass privately since 2004. I received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a Minor in Trombone Performance in 2009 from the Chicago College of Performing Arts where I studied with the great Jay Friedman of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

I currently am the principal trombonist with the Illinois Brass Band and play regularly with an all-female orchestra as well as an original music cooperative called Origin of Animal. I also freelance throughout the Chicago area. While I currently focus on classical and pops playing, I am well versed in jazz (big band and combo), funk, soul, rock, pop, and anything else under the sun.

I've worked with students of all ages (8-80 years old) throughout my tenure as a private instr
uctor. While I primarily focus on trombone teaching, I also have taught trumpet/cornet, euphonium/baritone, beginner horn, and beginner tuba. Many of my students have gone on to study music in college and play in local community groups. My focus is on producing the best possible sound consistently. I use singing to help emphasize style as I believe the ideal lyrical trombone sound is very similar to the human voice.

During my first lessons with my students, I get to know them not only as a musician but like to learn a bit more about them as a person to help us connect. I believe being able to connect with ones students is very important in a one-on-one setting and have had great success with this technique. I look forward to working with you!
