About Nicholas
Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. He enjoys playing lots of Motown, funk, and jazz, but is proficient in Classical, Rock, and Blues as well. When not playing music (rarely), he is a Board member for the GivingBackPack Foundation which provides school supplies to underprivileged children. Nick's dedication to education is shown through his music and his personal volunteer hours, he feels his diverse background gives his students an advantage to a broader perspective of music and theory.

I hadn't played the trumpet in 30 years. My first lesson with Nicholas was like starting from scratch. He is very knowledgeable, polite, professional, and definitely patient. I feel that that homework Nicholas assigned was spot on. I'm playing better already after only two days. I would certainly recommend him to a friend.

Nicholas really tailored the lessons to what I needed. They weren't cookie-cutter lessons, and I appreciated that. He answered all the questions I had, and helped me understand some concepts that I never would have gotten just learning online. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.

Trumpet Lessons

I also supply relevant exercises and music theory to accelerate the learning process.

Piano Lessons
I differentiate between concepts and skills, while stressing the importance of mastering both. As important as it is to understand the intervalic relationships in something like the major scale, this knowledge does little for the pianist if she or he cannot pick out the notes to the different scales in real time. In observing that each person demonstrates unique learning patterns and abilities, I have learned that some people will come to understand the conceptual through mastery of memorized tasks while some will succeed with technical mastery only after achieving some conceptual understanding.
Voice Lessons
Having first begun singing at 22 years old, I know first hand that it’s never to late to start singing. Having some experience in school but not fully as a professional till in my 20′s, I have learned from some of the top professionals in the South Florida area. My first vocal lessons was with Gloria Estefan’s back up singer Jon Secada. Jon has his first hit “Just Another Day” that stayed at #1 for several weeks. His one lesson really helped me use singing in my gigging around town. From that time on, I have used this technique for all my students. focusing on JUST BREATHING, has helped many of my students.

Teaching Sound Recording
Working in the early 1980s with recorded music and computers, I was introduced to the new wave of recording at its birth. At Miami Dade Community College, I taught and assisted students in Composition, Sound Development, and Sound Recording using Mac computers and PC’s. As of this day, I personally teach recording in Logic Pro, Bias Peak and Mastering using Waves plug ins and having finished products in Mp4 format and or CD’s.

My mission is to provide a positive musical experience for all students. For some this includes rigorous preparation for an audition of some kind, for others it may be an introduction to music fundamentals to foster better listening skills and greater artistic appreciation. All students will be challenged to improve their listening, timing, and technique. All students will learn to play songs that they love.

Recommendations for best results: make a three-month commitment to weekly lessons, and work up to 30 minutes of daily practice. This formula guarantees results. Bring your instrument, music books, and a binder with sheet protectors ☺

Jordan was born and raised in the El Centro, California where he began playing the alto sax in the elementary band program. At the age of 12, he began his study of guitar and drums, performing in several rock and ska bands around his home town and San Diego. At age 14, is where he found his love for brass instruments when he took up the trombone. While in high school he became a soloist with the Imperial Valley College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of former Basie trumpeter Jimmy Cannon. That lead Jordan to accept the Constance Weldon Music Scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.

While performing in South Florida Jordan appeared with major acts including 10,000 Maniacs, and appeared on the Spanish television show "Calle Ocho." He also gained invaluable experience teaching in Miami public schools. His first teaching assignment was at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School where he directed 3 beginning bands, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and their highly decorated Jazz Band. Later Jordan moved into the elementary setting, teaching vocal and instrumental music for grades K-5 at Cypress Elementary.

In 2007, Jordan returned to California to pursue a music career in San Diego. He can be seen performing all over San Diego, Orange, and LA Counties in styles ranging from rock, jazz, funk, blues, hip-hop, Latin, and more. He performs primarily on trombone, piano, and guitar, but is known to pick up percussion, harmonica, and other wind instruments as well. Jordan, along with the rest of the aggressively funky cover band SuperMagnetic, were the grand prize winner of the 2010 Viejas Ultimate Music Challenge 4. In 2011, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess were nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the category of "Best Blues Artist" after the release of their first album "From The Hip." They released their second album "Turbulence" last December, and are heard regularly on local San Diego radio. This album has also been nominated for Best Pop album for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. In 2013, Jordan completed his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University.

On stage, Jordan is a talented and versatile performer. He is known for his trombone sound and improvisational ability, as well as his positive relationship with his fellow musicians. In lessons, Jordan is energetic and creative.

I enjoy teaching kids and adults of all ages. When you arrive for our first lesson, we'll start by getting to know your musical tastes and aspirations. Then we make a plan. Then we play!

Everybody's path is different, but we must start with a strong foundation in the fundamentals. After we start to establish some technique on your instrument we will explore music that suits you from a practical stand point in your development, and very importantly, stylistically. Together we will plan a curriculum that keeps you motivated toward your goals and that fits your life style.

About Daniel
Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist and composer with two degrees earned concurrently from Indiana University--one a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences, the other a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the internationally renowned Jacobs School of Music.

Upon arriving in Chicago, I have taken on a role as the Director of Music at Marquette Park, where I serve as something between an artist-in-residence and a band director. On occasion, I travel out to New York City to take part in the BMI Jazz Composers' Workshop.

I have spent the last 35 years teaching elementary and middle school band in a community known for its strong music program.
I love teaching music to students.. especially the art of playing trumpet. I try to incorporate fun and enthusiasm in each lesson while accomplishing some short term and long term goals. The student is my ultimate focus during the lesson time. Sometimes my students arrive and have a total different idea of concepts or literature in which they wish to make progress different from what I had planned. We are always able to accommodate these shifts in plans while reaching our lesson goals.
I enjoy working with students in the middle school ages. I find that this is when they make the greatest growth. I have spent the last 35 years teaching elementary and middle school band in a community known for its strong music program.
I love teaching music to students.. especially the art of playing trumpet. I try to incorporate fun and enthusiasm in each lesson while accomplishing some short term and long term goals. The student is my ultimate focus during the lesson time. Sometimes my students arrive and have a total different idea of concepts or literature in which they wish to make progress different from what I had planned. We are always able to accommodate these shifts in plans while reaching our lesson goals.

Dr. Mealey was the man who taught me my very first lesson on the tuba oh so many years ago. I have since had the privilege of performing professionally in over 40 states and 30 countries around the world as a soloist and as a member of Boston Brass. The years of private lessons I took with Dr. Mealey gave me the perfect musical foundation to eventually pursue my dreams.

I still remember how much he cared for every single kid in each of his bands. There are people who are put on this earth to teach and he is one of those. I can't imagine how my life would have turned out if it weren't for Dr. Mealey.

I can't recommend studying with him any more highly.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mealey for fourteen years, first as a colleague and then as his supervisor. Bob is a very skilled musician and teacher. He has had many years of experience bringing his students' performance levels to new heights. He works hard and expects the same from his students. This winning combination has helped to create some very skilled musicians, with many of them going on to enjoy playing in ensembles for many years.

It was always a pleasure to watch Dr. Mealey and his students perform in concert. The looks of joy were always evident with everyone in the house - members of the ensemble, its director, and the audience.

You can't go wrong with Dr. Mealey.

Dr. Mealey had a tremendous impact on all of my children. He truly instilled in them a love of music and gave them an opportunity to really experiment and express themselves. Because of their solid foundation with Dr. Mealey, they played throughout high school and some even into the college level marching band! Dr. Mealey is a class act and knows how to connect with his students!

I consider myself a very well-rounded trumpeter. I studied classically for eight years before moving out of town for college, where I studied Jazz and lead trumpet under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed trumpeter, Jumaane Smith. As a result of my balanced upbringing on the horn, my skill set includes those necessary to be a successful, versatile player; which in today's world, is a must-have.

Special skills include:
- Extreme Upper Register (Double High C)
- Big Band/Commercial Lead
- Section/Principal Playing (any setting; quintet-to-orchestra; pop/rock section to jazz orchestra)

About Sam
A native of West Hartford, CT, Sam Merrill is a 2014 graduate of William H. Hall High School. During his time at Hall, he was a part of the school’s esteemed jazz program, where he played lead trumpet in John Mastroianni’s Concert Jazz Band. Hall’s show, “Pops ‘n Jazz” allowed Sam to work with musicians like trumpeters Tony Kadleck, Michael Mossman, Scott Wendholt, and Jeff Holmes, saxophonist Joel Frahm, pianist Joyce DiCamillo, and many others. Throughout middle and high school, Sam studied privately with Nancy Brown, a renowned trumpeter in the tristate area who helped Sam build a strong foundation on the instrument.

Upon graduating high school, Sam moved to Danbury, CT, where he pursued and obtained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University. At WCSU, he studies privately with Dave Scott, and Jumaan
e Smith (lead trumpet player for Michael Bublé and Harry Connick, Jr.). He also held an eight-semester tenure of the lead trumpet chair in the school’s esteemed Jazz Orchestra under the direction of GRAMMY nominated jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene, and guitarist Jamie Begian; both unbelievable talents and inspirations. Thanks to WCSU’s annual Jazz Festival, Sam has been fortunate enough to share the stage with the likes of pianist Kenny Barron, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and most recently, vibraphonist Stefon Harris.

Over the years, Sam was also fortunate enough to build a relationship with Los Angeles studio legend Wayne Bergeron, who has helped further develop his abilities on the trumpet.
A May 2018 graduate of WCSU, Sam just touched down in Nashville, TN, hoping to continue a career as a trumpeter, teacher, composer, and arranger.

I am an incredibly spirited and determined musician and educator who takes great joy in sharing music with as many people as I can. I am currently working on a BME from Indiana University, and while I still have a long way to go, I know full well in my ability to demonstrate my talent as a musician and educator. Performing all over the country has been one in a long list of wonderful and highly impact performances in my time as a musician, and I have played in settings ranging from Lucas Oil Stadium to IU's very own Recital Hall. I hope to further myself and those around me by taking on students, and I have not a doubt in my mind that everyone is a musician at heart.

My teaching experience dates as far back as my high school days, as I began giving lessons to 6th graders almost 6 years ago. Since then, I have taught and met with dozens of students, and helped them flourish as musicians, teaching both as a partner in local schools and out of my own home. The skill levels at which I teach range widely, as I have taught both beginners, learning how to hold their instrument for the first time, to advanced players almost better than me! I like to capitalize on making sure a student is setting proper goals and is achieving them at a consistent, healthy, and fun pace.

If my students are not enjoying themselves then I do whatever I can to change that! I am always ready to teach for all ages! For the newest of players who may also be children, I usually begin teaching out of The Yamaha Advantage series for
beginners. Once the student has demonstrated a strong understanding of the fundamentals of brass playing, I will begin introducing them to different solos, scales, and other repertoire in the hopes that they may want to perform in competition or recital.

For more advanced players, I try to find out what the student's specific goals are, and work with them to best achieve said goals. I have a plethora of etudes, solos, and other material to keep them interested in building up their abilities. Few things are as rewarding for me than being able to witness one of my students thrive in the performing arts! Therefore, it is important that my students have as much fun as possible and can feel accomplished achieving firm, yet reachable, personal goals. Acknowledging accomplishments helps students feel valued and like their efforts are worth something - fostering a readiness to learn more. I want to do whatever I can to help my students achieve greatness - however they may see fit. By trying to find out what inspires my students, I can successfully engineer my instruction to their wants and needs.
