About Farobag
Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Devel
opment Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. I've been playing a few instruments for 23 years, and finally decided to get into violin. Farobag made me realize that I know next to nothing about the violin, and there is so much to learn. I played only a few notes in my first lesson, but his instruction was worth every penny. I am very excited for the next lesson and look forward to learning everything I can from Farobag. Highly recommended.

Mr. Cooper is an experienced teacher. He teaches piano, violin & vocal from basic to advance level. My son has been taking piano classes from him for the past 3+ years. He loves to go to Mr. Cooper's classes. The foremost quality in Mr. Cooper is that he seeks perfection and tries to imbibe the same in his students. He encourages all his students to perform their best and is extremely patient in dealing with his students. Mr. Cooper lets me sit in my son's lessons and I got my 101 on classical music with these sessons. I can appreciate what my son plays and also now able to appreciate classical music in general.
Mr. Cooper encourages all his students to participate in IMA annual contests and puts a lot of effort in preparing his students for the same.

Mr. Copper is one of the best teachers that I know. I am a slow learner and he would teach me things over and over again until I understand. Overall, he is a great teacher and I would recommend him if you need help on math.

Matt is an excellent guitar teacher. I highly recommend him.

Matt has been teaching guitar to my 12 year old son for several months now. My sons' guitar playing has improved greatly since his lessons with Matt. He's playing with a lot more confidence, thanks to Matt's influence.

Matt is always on time and has a wonderful way with people. My son feels very comfortable with him. They collaborate on songs together and it is important to Matt that Jude be engaged in his guitar practice.

We're thrilled with Matt and I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Hello, thank you for visiting my site!

I am currently a music teacher for Kindergarten-8th grade, teaching general music, concert band and choir, with the occasional school performance of a musical thrown in the mix. My education in music really took off when I attended a Performing Arts High School where I focused mainly on the clarinet, piano and bassoon. During this time I was very active in the High School solo competition scene and took away many state titles in music theory, clarinet and piano. After graduating I received my BFA€™ in Piano Performance from the University of MN-Duluth. While I was studying I was fortunate to have an inspirational conductor who handed instruments of all kinds out to me. This really held my love and appreciation for music and I learned a lot of my teacher technique from her. I later receiv
ed my Masters€™s Degree in an unrelated field but soon realized what I wanted to do in my heart of hearts was teach music.

I have had a lot of experience playing in weddings, background music for large parties and gatherings, and accompaniment for an array of instruments and vocalists. On the clarinet I have performed solo recitals, worked on duets and also played with orchestras. I have a love for music theory and a lot of educational resources for teaching it.

I believe all of these life experiences have really helped me become a natural teacher. I offer a laid back approach and a friendly atmosphere while still providing structure and reasonable expectations. More than anything I want to keep the love and spark for music alive in every student, without that I truly believe it is hard to achieve your greatest goals. This is incorporated in custom lessons for every student.

Every lesson is designed for the student in mind as I don'€™t believe any two musicians are alike. People also have different learning styles which I can cater to so everyone is successful. While I have a laid back approach I do give 100% to every lesson I create and I expect the same appreciation from my students. Mistakes are never criticized, rather looked at as a learning experience. When I was taking lessons ruling with an iron fist€™ never benefited me so I make sure to keep a friendly relationship with my students, while still maintaining mutual expectations.

After one month of lessons with me you will have improved on your skills, no matter where you started with me. I put a strong emphasis on artistry alongside technical musicality so you can find your musical voice while still staying true to what you are learning.

My materials range from book series, mostly for beginners, to sheet music for the more advanced students.

Studying at the college level taught me a lot about what not to do as a teacher. The material is already difficult enough, so why would I be difficult with you?

I strive to be more of a mentor and friend rather than taskmaster. However, I do require structure and commitment to getting better. My curriculum will revolve around you and your needs with added material that I feel will help you succeed.

A typical lesson plan includes:

My teaching studio is just steps away from the Belmont Blue Line stop! Our lessons will be held in a private practice space in my home. The large room has multiple amps and guitars, so there is no need to bring an instrument for lessons if you don't want to! (But, you do need an instrument to practice with outside of our lessons!)

Music theory lessons go over the basic theory skills to assist in composition and performance. These involve, notation, rhythm, chord structure, chord progression, style and genre, as well as transposition. Theory is necessary, especially with instrumentalists, but I include it in all vocal lessons as well. Over the last ten years, I've taught that theory is the backbone of music, and understanding it not only assists in composition, but in piecing together notes and phrases. With a customized curriculum, goals are reached within a planned time frame.

I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a life of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist
at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beauitful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly choose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 11 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

I hadn't played the trumpet in 30 years. My first lesson with Nicholas was like starting from scratch. He is very knowledgeable, polite, professional, and definitely patient. I feel that that homework Nicholas assigned was spot on. I'm playing better already after only two days. I would certainly recommend him to a friend.

Nicholas really tailored the lessons to what I needed. They weren't cookie-cutter lessons, and I appreciated that. He answered all the questions I had, and helped me understand some concepts that I never would have gotten just learning online. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.

I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so
I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

I have been sneaking music theory into all of my lessons from the very beginning. I have a minor in music and have a solid understanding of scales, chord constructions, progressions etc.
Science plays into my theory lessons too. It is not my intention to bang people over the head with theory, I just like to help people understand how music works.

I started playing guitar about 20 years ago and have fronted several bands that have played all over Chicago and beyond. Although I have studied ethnomusicology, theory, and composition in college, I owe my greatest debt to the Chicago musicians who inspired and later taught me. I began my private studies in flamenco guitar with Tomas de Utrera, Kelan Phil Cohran voice and theory, Hamid Drake instructed me on hand drumming, and from Rockin' Johnny Burgin I learned about the soul of blues guitar. Music is my first
love, and continues to be an endless fascination for me.

I believe the pursuit of musical knowledge and skill should be a fun adventure and therefore, in each and every lesson with me I hope that there is laughter. I like to start off finding out what you are interested in learning, then I will create a curriculum based on those interests. I like to get students going right away playing songs so they don't get bored. By the end of three months you should have a nice little repertoire of 6 or so songs in different keys and a beginning knowledge of your instrument and by six months we will have moved into scales, solos and a bit of theory based on your progression.

Ayme is fantastic teacher and very patient. I had to suspend my lessons with her due to some personal things going on, but I can't wait to get back. A really great teacher.

About Daniel
Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.
