I have been playing drums and percussion since the ripe old age of 9, in 4th grade. Originally wanting to play the clarinet, my music teacher thought my sense of rhythm was too good to waste and placed me in the drum section. I was the only kid who didn't want to play drums. Twenty years later here I am, a professional freelancing percussionist and teacher. The journey to where I am was a long and winding one but I can't imagine it any other way. After learning basic drumming in elementary sch
ool, I continued through middle school. There I was placed on drum kit and thought I was the coolest. I didn't take it too seriously but serious enough to keep playing drum kit. When choosing high schools I wasn't interested in keeping with drums. I only took marching band because it meant no gym. After my first year I was placed in every band the next three years, having to learn timpani and marimba for concert band. I was also recommended to join a city wide concert band, InterSchool orchestras of New York, and haven't left since. I still coach the band and help tons of high school and middle school students hone their craft. Also that year, through ISO, I was given a chance to attend French woods performing arts camp on scholarship where I began my love of playing in musical pit orchestras. Through this time I studied with a couple of teachers and had plenty of coachings with professional percussionists. Upon graduating I have played well over 100 different musicals, played with over 25 different orchestras, and have taught over 100 students both privately and in coachings. I currently run a Drumline out of a private school, coach ISO band, freelance and have a studio of 8 students. That is a short sample of my journey and I hope it inspires you to study with me.

If you choose me as a teacher, I will shape you as an overall musician, not just a "Drummer". What this means is that you won't just learn beats from me, you will learn all the fundamentals of basic to intermediate music theory, from note reading and rhythm to chord changes and ..... You will start on a practice pad and quickly go to a drum kit. Lessons will be half and half, but more 75/25 drumkit, because everything you learn on a pad can translate to the kit! I would also teach you timpani and xylophone if you like so you can broaden your horizons and even get into the middle/high school or college you want. I have most of my books of pdf that I can give you to print or you can purchase your own copies. You would also need to purchase a practice pad and eventually a drum kit. If you don't want to purchase a drum kit then there is almost no reason to study it since you won't be able to practice between lessons. Practicing, let's talk about that. It is expected that you practice the material we learn in the lesson throughout the week. Now I know everyone is busy, but if you can put aside 25 minutes (a sitcom without commercials!!) a day then you will have a better understanding and better retention of the material. Doing this will let us just review the material a little bit and go on to learn new and exciting things.

The bottom line in choosing me? I am a professional musician in the trenches of the nyc music scene and know what it takes to make it.

About Todd
Music is my life, and is something that I want to share with others! Because of that, I try my best to give positive experiences to all of my students. I have a byline that says "Music is Much More than Just Learning Notes." I believe that! Anyone can learn notes, fingerings, etc. What I try to do is add that "soul" element that each person has and cultivate that into meaningful music!

So, with all that said, here's what I try to instill:

A lesson is a place to share! I listen to students as well as teach. We all have something we can learn from each other!

While I want lessons to be fun and informative, I strive for complete understanding, which means any student will gain the needed mechanics with complete knowledge of why things happen and what they do to and for music. From there, I attempt to teach the "soul" of mu
sic and how emotion and spirit play a huge part in memorable music.

I don't believe in brow-beating, but I also don't want to pass over things. I don't believe practice makes perfect, but I do believe practice increases awareness!

I really try hard to help students move beyond the notes on the page. We may listen to music and describe how it makes us feel, or paint pictures both physical and mental of what the music is showing us. That is where I see the soul stepping in.

My Education

As stated before, I started on a little Magnus Organ. My grandmother told me years later that I would listen to television jingles and then try to play them on the organ!

Once we settled in our permanent home, my parents brought home a piano and I began working first with Robert Warnick, a local music teacher in the schools. He taught scales and chords. Then, Midge Bishop took me through John Thompson Grade 3, but then had to move away. Finally, I studied under Victoria Hope, lasting 13 years until I went on to college. She taught me the fine art of piano by continually challenging me to approach each piece as an artwork. She had me use the music to paint the picture. Naturally, the element of the soul came through as I put color to music.

My Experience

Throughout my elementary through high school days, I immersed myself in band, choir and drama. I played piano at church starting very young. I then began trombone in the band during 4th grade. Upon entering high school, I joined choir and participated in marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. During those years, I picked up the rest of the brass instruments as needed by my band director. In choir, I excelled both in voice and on piano through accompaniment. Later in high school, I joined up with the drama department where we ultimately had the opportunity to write our own musical. By the time I entered college, I had mastered all the brass instruments, piano and snare drum.

During college, I participated in the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band, trombone choir, several pit orchestras, and the symphony orchestra. I also participated in the choir.

Since that time, I have mastered the woodwinds, organ, drum set guitar and bass guitar and a little violin. I have over 25 years experience teaching lessons. They occurred off and on throughout my younger days.

5 through 114 (I haven't seen anyone older, have you?) I believe it is a good idea that a child can read the written word. Reading music occurs in similar ways.

*** Lesson Details ***
I ask lots of questions so I can get to know you better. This is also an opportunity for you ask questions of me. At the beginning, I encourage parents to attend so they can see what these lessons entail. I give you assignments to work with and then you play them for me to receive praise and constructive suggestions. I also try to challenge my students to move beyond the normal curriculum to play other things that interest them.

Depending on the instrument and the experience you have helps me determine what curriculum I want to use. Again, I cater my lessons to the needs you have and by how you like to learn!

After 3 to 6 mos, I hope you have a good working knowledge of how music works and are now moving into intermediate level work. However, each student is different and work a different speeds. My main goal is for you to feel successful whenever you leave my studio!

Emerson is an amazing instructor. Besides being a very knowledgeable and gifted musician, he’s patient, kind, and makes learning the drums fun. What I appreciate most about Emerson is that he’s interested in helping me reach my goals. I happen to be interested in learning Latin style drums and lucky for me, Latin is one (of many) of Emerson’s specialties. So many people have told me that Latin is hard to learn, but in four short lessons, I already know how to play a basic Bossa Nova beat. Emerson is a very organized and efficient instructor. We work with handouts, video (I record him as he instructs) and reading exercises from a book. A highlight for me in our sessions is when Emerson accompanies my drum playing with another instrument, the piano for example. I really get the feeling like we’re having a little jam session and it's fun because I can hear that I'm making music and that's an awesome feeling.

I pretty much teach all common areas of percussion. These include timpani, drum set, marching percussion, mallet percussion, concert percussion, and some world percussion.

About Alex
Alex was born May 31, 1987. Since both of his parents were band directors, he grew up in a very musically inclined family. When he was 15 years old, during his freshman year of high school, he started studying percussion. A year later he began studying under Chad Kohler and continued to do so until 2009. During spring semester of 2009 he studied briefly under Richard Walker at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In the fall of that year he then transferred to Butler University for an academic year and studied under Craig Hetrick and Jon Crabiel.

Beginning in 2011 Alex began studying attending University of Indianapolis and is currently studying under Paul Berns as well as Art Reiner. In addition to studying with them he has also went back to continue to study with his mentor Chad Kohler. In the time since Alex gr
aduated high school, he has been continuously presented with teaching opportunities. At the time, though, music was not looking like the best course of action for him. With the aid of Chad Kohler, Alex then began getting more involved with teaching percussion. Alex eventually went on to arranging his own parts for his students, as well as composing original percussion ensemble pieces. Alex is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Music Technology at IUPUI.

In the time since he has been out of high school, he has taught at a number of schools including the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, North Putnam Jr./Sr. High School, Broad Ripple Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities, and Lawrence Central. He has also taught at Arlington High School and Short Ridge High School.

When it comes to teaching music, what is known to be as the “Holy Trinity” comes to mind. While teaching I personally believe that it is important to challenge students just enough so that they are not discouraged and are still able to have fun.

The Holy Trinity plays a big role in this. What it consists of is embracing your students from all angles. This would be from ensembles and private lessons, which in turn then encourage them to practice. Ensemble, private lessons, and practicing are the three main categories that make up the “Holy Trinity.” And in using this, you can also be more involved with your students as well. It is always a good idea be friend your students as well and not just be the “teacher.” There is a great quote that goes like this, “They will never care about how much you know, until they know how much you care.” In which case has been proven to be very true time and time again.

It is important as a teacher to be able to inspire your students and to encourage them. Which is why I think it is important to be a good friend as well to your students. This way a kind of trust is formed and in turn can easily lead to the success of a music program. Also I do believe that it is important to expose students to as many forms of music as possible. This way they are not just stuck in one kind of mind set and if they choose to go into music for their career, then they have many different experiences they can pull and relate from. Plus they will also have some more knowledge of different cultures and music genres that can help not only create better music but also be more overall worldly in their personal life out side of music. Being able to learn about music is very important, and can easily impact a student’s life in many different ways that most subjects just do not have the capability to. This is what I believe about learning music and why I also love to teach it. I want my students to be able to have all the same great experiences I have had and more. Which is why I personally believe so heavily in a good music education.

*** Lesson Details ***
Although the approach to teaching that I use comes across as being pretty laid back, I do expect what some might consider to be a lot out of my students. This is because I want to make sure that my students will be successful as musicians.

While a student is studying with me; they will learn about percussion from multiple angles. They will learn and be able to understand many basic music theory terms and principles. They will also learn how each percussion instrument is tied to one another in technique and how to easily transition from instrument to instrument.

Depending on the age of the student, after about three months of studying with me, the student will know a few major scales, most of the standard American rudiments, and some basic drum set concepts. After 6 months, the student will know all 12 major scales, be familiar with all 40 snare drum rudiments, and know a good portion of basic drum set.

Please keep in mind that results may vary depending on the age of the student and the amount of practicing they do on their own. Results also depend upon whether or not they are practicing correctly, which is something they will also learn how to do with me.

In-studio lessons in basement with acoustic drum set. Street parking or drive way. Seating available for parents.

Lessons at the High School will be in the band room with their equipment.

In our percussion class we will cover music theory, counting rhythms and discover a variety of percussion. The majority of this lesson will revolve around the Cajon, Shaker, Tamborine, and using brushes and snare technique and will explore african drums as well!

I started my musical path in a Ballet Studio. I fell in love with the crackle of the vinyl record playing as I learned to listen and dance with the rhythm.

I started playing the guitar when I was in elementary and took classical lessons until I was a teenager.I really enjoy the art of practice and the journey of patience. The process of learning has helped me carve out and cultivate my style of music. It's opened up a lot of doors for me in my life. Rachel is the best guitar teacher I have ever had...period...EVER! Her easy going method allows me to learn just enough as a beginner to enjoy and then move on to the next lesson. We are not concerned with learning lengthy songs or long, drawn, out scales as I am only a beginner! But at the same time we are not learning row-row-row-your boat. I am learning chords, arpeggios, hammer-ons, lite theory, and all at a very short easy pace which is what I want. Five stars for her as a teacher by far!!!

I have formal training on congas (studied w/ Eguie Castrillo - Tito Puente's disciple, has performed with Jenifer Lopez, Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval Band, & many others)

Also extensively studied at Berklee as well as spent a month in Ghana, regarding traditional West African percussion, especially that of the Ewe people. But also Ga tradition - specifically, the kpanlogo drum.

Also extensively studied Brazilian percussion, was just down in Brazil a month ago.

I have experience also teaching bongos (used especially in bachata) and also djembe technique.

I can teach you a universe of rhythmic knowledge to create a deep architecture for you to excel in any percussion/rhythmic context.

We were thrilled with Josh! Our son really enjoyed his lessons and improved significantly working with him for the last year. Josh is a motivational teacher - our son WANTED to practice each day and that is because of Josh's inspiration and modeling what it takes to be a great drummer. Our son gained both the confidence and ability to audition for an make it into 3 high school bands this year. He couldn't have done it without Josh. Percussion is so much more than drums. If you are wanting a comprehensive beginners guide to playing percussion. I can help you with posture, sticking, and giving you the fundamentals needed to have an awesome start to your percussion playing. These skills transfer to all percussion instruments, including drum set. I would recommend finding a percussion teacher who plays percussion primarily.

Hi, I am Matt Shewmaker. I am a band director in the Fort Smith, AR area. I am in my 7th year teaching band and love every minute of it. I have recently decided to return to teaching private lessons, and would love to help you with your auditions, festival music, AP music theory exams, or just learn some skills on becoming a better musician. Outside of the audition music, we continually work tone production, range, and confidence on any brass instrument. In college I had a small guitar studio as well. Some of those guitar students have gone on to study at the collegiate level and gig around town today! I am comfortable teaching at all levels, but my expertise is centered around student development at the middle school to high school level.

June 2012 - June 2015 I was the head band director of Waldron High School. We won several awards
through our marching and concert band program. I also ran after school lessons in which many students made our region honor band.

June 2015 - Present
I am currently the head director at Trinity Junior High in Fort Smith. I run a 7-9 band program that includes both marching and concert band seasons. Our student involvement is quite high as our band program serves about 50% of our total student population.

Hello! My name is Dan, and I've been working in the field of music for a number of years.  After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, I have worked in Boston and around the United States and Canada as a performer in the percussive arts.

My curriculum revolves entirely around the student. It is important to explore all areas of technique, style, grove, and chops. And of course I will always introduce these ideas to my students, but the most important thing is that we create art. And in order to do this, I strive to find my students true voice in his or her playing, and implement new ideas in and around it.

Music has been an enormous part of my life, and I wish to share both my knowledge and experiences with others. My mission is to give my students the same enjoyment that I have received from playing music.
