About Todd
Music is my life, and is something that I want to share with others! Because of that, I try my best to give positive experiences to all of my students. I have a byline that says "Music is Much More than Just Learning Notes." I believe that! Anyone can learn notes, fingerings, etc. What I try to do is add that "soul" element that each person has and cultivate that into meaningful music!

So, with all that said, here's what I try to instill:

A lesson is a place to share! I listen to students as well as teach. We all have something we can learn from each other!

While I want lessons to be fun and informative, I strive for complete understanding, which means any student will gain the needed mechanics with complete knowledge of why things happen and what they do to and for music. From there, I attempt to teach the "soul" of mu
sic and how emotion and spirit play a huge part in memorable music.

I don't believe in brow-beating, but I also don't want to pass over things. I don't believe practice makes perfect, but I do believe practice increases awareness!

I really try hard to help students move beyond the notes on the page. We may listen to music and describe how it makes us feel, or paint pictures both physical and mental of what the music is showing us. That is where I see the soul stepping in.

My Education

As stated before, I started on a little Magnus Organ. My grandmother told me years later that I would listen to television jingles and then try to play them on the organ!

Once we settled in our permanent home, my parents brought home a piano and I began working first with Robert Warnick, a local music teacher in the schools. He taught scales and chords. Then, Midge Bishop took me through John Thompson Grade 3, but then had to move away. Finally, I studied under Victoria Hope, lasting 13 years until I went on to college. She taught me the fine art of piano by continually challenging me to approach each piece as an artwork. She had me use the music to paint the picture. Naturally, the element of the soul came through as I put color to music.

My Experience

Throughout my elementary through high school days, I immersed myself in band, choir and drama. I played piano at church starting very young. I then began trombone in the band during 4th grade. Upon entering high school, I joined choir and participated in marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. During those years, I picked up the rest of the brass instruments as needed by my band director. In choir, I excelled both in voice and on piano through accompaniment. Later in high school, I joined up with the drama department where we ultimately had the opportunity to write our own musical. By the time I entered college, I had mastered all the brass instruments, piano and snare drum.

During college, I participated in the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band, trombone choir, several pit orchestras, and the symphony orchestra. I also participated in the choir.

Since that time, I have mastered the woodwinds, organ, drum set guitar and bass guitar and a little violin. I have over 25 years experience teaching lessons. They occurred off and on throughout my younger days.

Ages Taught

5 through 114 (I haven't seen anyone older, have you?) I believe it is a good idea that a child can read the written word. Reading music occurs in similar ways.

*** Lesson Details ***
I ask lots of questions so I can get to know you better. This is also an opportunity for you ask questions of me. At the beginning, I encourage parents to attend so they can see what these lessons entail. I give you assignments to work with and then you play them for me to receive praise and constructive suggestions. I also try to challenge my students to move beyond the normal curriculum to play other things that interest them.

Depending on the instrument and the experience you have helps me determine what curriculum I want to use. Again, I cater my lessons to the needs you have and by how you like to learn!

After 3 to 6 mos, I hope you have a good working knowledge of how music works and are now moving into intermediate level work. However, each student is different and work a different speeds. My main goal is for you to feel successful whenever you leave my studio!

I've been teaching trumpet for 13 years and my students have gone on to be first chair in their school programs, members of the all state band and the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra to name a few. My students have also advanced to the state solo and ensemble contest numerous times. I specialize in classical and jazz and typically use the Getchell, Arban, Clarke, Rochut, and Voxman books. I expect daily practice from my students, as well as a strong desire to make music. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Jay
My musical journey began the with piano at the age of seven. I took regular lesson all the way through high school, eventually performing works such as Gershwin Etudes, Chopin Waltzes, Debussy Arabesques, and Beethoven Piano Sonatas. My trumpet performing started in 1993 and continues, having earned two degrees in trumpet performance, and performed with groups such as the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and Lone Star Wind Orchestra.

I have been teaching privately for 14 years. For eight years, I had a studio of around 50 students in the Dallas area where my students have performed at events such as the state solo and ensemble contest in Austin, and in groups such as the Texas All State Band, and Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra to name a few. I relocated to Indianapolis in 2015, and have enjoyed teaching lessons through Fall Creek Va
lly Middle School and Paige's Music. Through the years I have learned to adjust my teaching technique to match each individual, whether it be the music difficulty, learning pace, or musical genre preference. I have taught trumpet students of all ages and abilities, as well as beginning and intermediate piano and french horn. I look forward to helping you make beautiful music on your instrument!

My teaching philosophy

Private lessons are a one on one experience that give students guidance on their specific musical needs. Rather than only working on pieces for un upcoming audition or competition, I emphasize working on a variety of repertoire that will improve all aspects of one’s musicianship. Lessons are not a weekly practice or coaching session, but rather a time for me to help students with what they have already been practicing. More specifically, I help with embouchure formation, tone production, note reading, practice technique, musical phrasing, breathing, performance anxiety, rhythm, music theory, bad habits, or anything that will help the student make better music in the long term. I also frequently provide musical examples and inspiration by playing for my students.

Lesson Policies

Students are required to practice a minimum of fifteen to forty-five minutes per day (depending on the student’s age), six days per week.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own lesson materials, such as books, valve oil, metronome, etc. Piano students must also have a well maintained piano to practice on. High quality electric keyboards with 88 keys, weighted and touch sensitive, are acceptable.

I have a 24-hour lesson rescheduling policy. If a student fails to provide notice via phone, text or email at least 24 hours prior to the starting time of the lesson, or misses a lesson unannounced, they will be charged for the full lesson cost. If adequate notification is given, the lesson will be made up at a later date. Lessons MAY NOT BE MISSED WITHOUT MAKEUP. I do, however, allow students to miss lessons without makeup during the months of November (up to one lesson), December and August (up to two lessons each month) and July (no limit), and one lesson for spring break.

With rare exception, all of my students take weekly lessons. Students who keep a regular, weekly schedule improve at a far better pace than those who miss frequently.

When we got there, we could hear Jay warming up, and the sound was amazing. Once we started, he was very positive and explains and teaches things in a way that makes sense to me and makes me feel like I can do this. Confidence has been a problem so far; I'm thinking I might be able to get past that and learn to enjoy playing my trumpet more.

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. Carl has an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. Carl completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, treasurer of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. ​Carl lives in Brookings, South Dakota. He enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

Miles McAllister is a Southern California-based performer and educator. He is a member of the nationally and internationally touring brass quintet Presidio Brass (presidiobrass.com). He is also 3rd trumpet of the Santa Barbara Symphony and a member of the Disneyland Band at the Disneyland Resort. Miles is an active freelance performer and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Pacific Chorale, Long Beach Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Pops, New West Symphony, California Philharmonic, Redlands Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Philharmonic, Golden State Pops Orchestra, San Bernardino Symphony, Pacific Brass Ensemble, and many other groups throughout Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, and the Inland Empire.

He can be heard on Star Wars: Rogue One and With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story. From 2011-2013, he
played lead trumpet for Carnival Cruise Lines in numerous showbands performing in their full-scale production shows and live variety sets. He appeared as a soloist with the Redlands Symphony where he performed the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto and at the Redlands Bowl Festival performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. He has also performed with Persian pop singer Shahkar, Mannheim Steamroller, Chris Botti, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

He earned his Master of Music in Trumpet Performance at California State University Fullerton in 2015 and graduated from the University of Redlands in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance.

As an educator, Miles is energetic and keeps lessons positive, varied, and always with a goal in mind. There is a constant emphasis on building fundamentals and using those as a foundation for making great music. Not everyone learns the same way so it is his aim to be adaptable to the student's needs to help them understand and process the concepts behind good trumpet playing. He has taught all ages and skill levels, privately and in group settings, and can be a valuable asset in helping you achieve your musical pursuits. Three of his recent students have been placed as the principal trumpet in the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra and one was placed in the Claremont Intermezzo Youth Orchestra. Locally there are no quality trumpet teachers within 45 minute of our home. My son, who has played in middle school for the last two years, started lessons with Chris online 3 weeks ago. Although I was a little pessimistic on how well my son would respond, everything has been great. Chris is very good with explaining concepts and is very patient. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for online trumpet lessons.

Every level welcome. I have found the most success with "Essential Elements 2000" for beginners. As students progress, more materials will be needed. "Arban's: Complete Method for Trumpet" is standard for advancing students in my curriculum.

Dan M. is a freelance musician and private lesson instructor in the Chicago area. Born in the Chicago suburbs, Mr. M. graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Music in euphonium performance, and traveled to Colorado where he earned a Master of Music in trombone performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder. As an active musician, he has performed on trombone and euphonium in many musical groups ranging form wind ensembles and orchestras to brass quintets and other chamber groups. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of North Texas, a University well known for their music school and famous graduates.
My primary expertise is teaching Trumpet and brass instruments,
Vocal jazz, and beginner piano for kids or adults.

Gary can support varying level of capabilities and has a similar story to mine. Stopped for a little while then started back up. He understands the fundamentals as well as as the advanced knowledge.

Gary is an absolutely amazing teacher, he makes me feel extremely comfortable when singing and playing. He's helping me improve my overall music knowledge and focusing on what I personally would like to learn. I'd recommend anyone who might be a little shy to Gary because he's really helping me with mine.

I am a very active and serious musician. I currently have a Bachelors degree (University of Delaware) and Masters degree (University of Hartford: Hartt School) for trumpet performance. I am considered an orchestral player compared to other genres, but I do perform other types as well (band, opera, jazz, pop, brass quintet, etc.). My name is Jennifer and I have been a private trumpet instructor for over 15 years. I am a graduate of Arizona State University (home to one of the most prestigious trumpet studios in the country) where I studied with world-renowned soloist and instructor, David Hickman. I also started a Masters at Boise State where I studied with Marcelus Brown (featured on Oprah!)

I have performed with several professional orchestras and currently play principal with the East Valley Millennial Orchestra here in Mesa/Gilbert. My trumpet-playing is featured on several of their albums including "O Holy Night" and "To Be American."

From 2007-2010 I taught collegiate-level private trumpet instruction at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher. I am published with the International Trumpet Guild Journal Jr. and I have a trumpet sextet published through Hi
ckman Music Editions, which has been performed by colleges all over the country as well as at several International Trumpet Guild Conferences. I currently co-write piano accompaniments and transcriptions and manage the production of music for Lindsey Stirling Music, Musicnotes, and Hal Leonard.
