Beginning to intermediate lessons taught using the school's chosen method book. Intermediate lessons are supplemented with more advanced repertoire.

About Todd
Music is my life, and is something that I want to share with others! Because of that, I try my best to give positive experiences to all of my students. I have a byline that says "Music is Much More than Just Learning Notes." I believe that! Anyone can learn notes, fingerings, etc. What I try to do is add that "soul" element that each person has and cultivate that into meaningful music!

So, with all that said, here's what I try to instill:

A lesson is a place to share! I listen to students as well as teach. We all have something we can learn from each other!

While I want lessons to be fun and informative, I strive for complete understanding, which means any student will gain the needed mechanics with complete knowledge of why things happen and what they do to and for music. From there, I attempt to teach the "soul" of mu
sic and how emotion and spirit play a huge part in memorable music.

I don't believe in brow-beating, but I also don't want to pass over things. I don't believe practice makes perfect, but I do believe practice increases awareness!

I really try hard to help students move beyond the notes on the page. We may listen to music and describe how it makes us feel, or paint pictures both physical and mental of what the music is showing us. That is where I see the soul stepping in.

My Education

As stated before, I started on a little Magnus Organ. My grandmother told me years later that I would listen to television jingles and then try to play them on the organ!

Once we settled in our permanent home, my parents brought home a piano and I began working first with Robert Warnick, a local music teacher in the schools. He taught scales and chords. Then, Midge Bishop took me through John Thompson Grade 3, but then had to move away. Finally, I studied under Victoria Hope, lasting 13 years until I went on to college. She taught me the fine art of piano by continually challenging me to approach each piece as an artwork. She had me use the music to paint the picture. Naturally, the element of the soul came through as I put color to music.

My Experience

Throughout my elementary through high school days, I immersed myself in band, choir and drama. I played piano at church starting very young. I then began trombone in the band during 4th grade. Upon entering high school, I joined choir and participated in marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. During those years, I picked up the rest of the brass instruments as needed by my band director. In choir, I excelled both in voice and on piano through accompaniment. Later in high school, I joined up with the drama department where we ultimately had the opportunity to write our own musical. By the time I entered college, I had mastered all the brass instruments, piano and snare drum.

During college, I participated in the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band, trombone choir, several pit orchestras, and the symphony orchestra. I also participated in the choir.

Since that time, I have mastered the woodwinds, organ, drum set guitar and bass guitar and a little violin. I have over 25 years experience teaching lessons. They occurred off and on throughout my younger days.

I ask lots of questions so I can get to know you better. This is also an opportunity for you ask questions of me. At the beginning, I encourage parents to attend so they can see what these lessons entail. I give you assignments to work with and then you play them for me to receive praise and constructive suggestions. I also try to challenge my students to move beyond the normal curriculum to play other things that interest them.

Depending on the instrument and the experience you have helps me determine what curriculum I want to use. Again, I cater my lessons to the needs you have and by how you like to learn!

After 3 to 6 mos, I hope you have a good working knowledge of how music works and are now moving into intermediate level work. However, each student is different and work a different speeds. My main goal is for you to feel successful whenever you leave my studio!

I am able to teach beginning level horn.

About Justin
Applauded for his “gleaming trumpet work” (Hyde Park Herald), Justin B. is a versatile musician, performing on both historical and modern trumpets. He specializes in early music, most notably in difficult high-register music for Baroque trumpet. Before formally studying Baroque trumpet, Justin won first prize in multiple historical instruments divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. Dr. B. is now often sought as a Baroque trumpeter by numerous ensembles throughout North America. He has performed on period instruments with Musica Angelica, Apollo’s Fire, the American Bach Soloists, Tempesta di Mare, Lyra Baroque, Bach Collegium San Diego, Baroque Band, Madison Bach Musicians, Handel Choir of Baltimore, Early Music Alberta, Magnolia Baroque Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, the Washington Bach Consort, Chantry, Orchestra of the 17th Ce
ntury, the Jubilate Orchestra, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Mannheim Rocket, and the Washington Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. For the 2015-2016 season, in addition to engagements in the U.S. and Canada, Justin will be performing on Baroque trumpet in Europe.

As a modern trumpeter, Justin has experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, pit orchestras for opera and musical theater, British brass bands, and numerous chamber ensembles. Before beginning his college career, he was principal trumpeter of the DC Youth Orchestra and had the opportunity to tour Japan as a trumpet soloist. He also performed regularly with the Prince George’s Philharmonic while in high school. More recently, he as appeared as a soloist with the South Dakota Symphony, the Firelands Symphony, and the Las Vegas Sinfonietta.

In addition to be being a trumpeter, Justin is also a countertenor and has sung with Apollo’s Fire and Opera Cleveland. While in Ohio, he was an alto section leader in the chamber and chancel choirs at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland and was the countertenor with Cantores Cleveland (now Contrapunctus). In addition, Justin briefly served as a bass section leader at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. Justin also plays recorder.

Justin recently earned his DMA in trumpet performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He received his MA in early music performance practices from Case Western and his BM in trumpet performance from the University of Maryland. His primary trumpet teachers include Chris Gekker, Barry Bauguess, Steven Hendrickson, Steven Trinkle, and Justin Emerich. He has studied voice with Delores Zeigler, Ellen Hargis, and Aaron Sheehan. As a graduate assistant, Justin taught courses in ear training and music appreciation, and was a harpsichord tuner.

-----

“It [the Baroque trumpet] is more difficult to play than its modern counterpart, but it’s a fascinating and arresting sound. The trumpet part in the second [Brandenburg] concerto is famous for its fiendish difficulties, and Justin [B.] played it with aplomb.” Edmonton Journal

“Skilled [Baroque trumpet] players can play the notes of the harmonic series with such instruments. A very refined embouchure is needed to “lip” or flatten or sharpen the impure harmonics of the notes of the 11th and 13th harmonics. The most virtuosic could use such techniques to produce certain chromatic notes outside this series…Justin [B.] made such skills seem effortless…” Classical Voice of North Carolina

I can't compare Justin with any other teacher as my child has had only one trumpet instructor; but I believe they do not come much, if any better, than Justin! He is a natural teacher. He is punctual, caring, patient, encouraging, and most professional. I especially like the way he consistently corrects the "little" bad habits that may become a monumental problem later. I consider it an honor having my child being taught by Justin.

I've been teaching horn for eight years and my students have gone on to make the all region band at the middle school and high school level. I expect my students to practice daily, as well as do a fair amount of listening to professional horn players. I have many problem solving tricks for horn students that have helped them master the basics of such a difficult instrument. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Jay
My musical journey began the with piano at the age of seven. I took regular lesson all the way through high school, eventually performing works such as Gershwin Etudes, Chopin Waltzes, Debussy Arabesques, and Beethoven Piano Sonatas. My trumpet performing started in 1993 and continues, having earned two degrees in trumpet performance, and performed with groups such as the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and Lone Star Wind Orchestra.

I have been teaching privately for 14 years. For eight years, I had a studio of around 50 students in the Dallas area where my students have performed at events such as the state solo and ensemble contest in Austin, and in groups such as the Texas All State Band, and Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra to name a few. I relocated to Indianapolis in 2015, and have enjoyed teaching lessons through Fall Creek Va
lly Middle School and Paige's Music. Through the years I have learned to adjust my teaching technique to match each individual, whether it be the music difficulty, learning pace, or musical genre preference. I have taught trumpet students of all ages and abilities, as well as beginning and intermediate piano and french horn. I look forward to helping you make beautiful music on your instrument!

My teaching philosophy

Private lessons are a one on one experience that give students guidance on their specific musical needs. Rather than only working on pieces for un upcoming audition or competition, I emphasize working on a variety of repertoire that will improve all aspects of one’s musicianship. Lessons are not a weekly practice or coaching session, but rather a time for me to help students with what they have already been practicing. More specifically, I help with embouchure formation, tone production, note reading, practice technique, musical phrasing, breathing, performance anxiety, rhythm, music theory, bad habits, or anything that will help the student make better music in the long term. I also frequently provide musical examples and inspiration by playing for my students.

Lesson Policies

Students are required to practice a minimum of fifteen to forty-five minutes per day (depending on the student’s age), six days per week.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own lesson materials, such as books, valve oil, metronome, etc. Piano students must also have a well maintained piano to practice on. High quality electric keyboards with 88 keys, weighted and touch sensitive, are acceptable.

I have a 24-hour lesson rescheduling policy. If a student fails to provide notice via phone, text or email at least 24 hours prior to the starting time of the lesson, or misses a lesson unannounced, they will be charged for the full lesson cost. If adequate notification is given, the lesson will be made up at a later date. Lessons MAY NOT BE MISSED WITHOUT MAKEUP. I do, however, allow students to miss lessons without makeup during the months of November (up to one lesson), December and August (up to two lessons each month) and July (no limit), and one lesson for spring break.

With rare exception, all of my students take weekly lessons. Students who keep a regular, weekly schedule improve at a far better pace than those who miss frequently.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Baldwin upright piano
Clavinova keyboard with weighted keys

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide no equipment

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical, jazz, and commercial, having experience in all three areas. I teach a lot of ear training and music theory regardless of the instrument.

When we got there, we could hear Jay warming up, and the sound was amazing. Once we started, he was very positive and explains and teaches things in a way that makes sense to me and makes me feel like I can do this. Confidence has been a problem so far; I'm thinking I might be able to get past that and learn to enjoy playing my trumpet more.

I studied with Dale Clevenger at Indiana University for my Masters degree and bring the philosophy of musical goals first and foremost. The most important part of playing horn is sound and I will work with you to get the best sound possible.

About Olivier
My name is Olivier Huebscher. I am a horn player who received my MM in Horn Performance from Indiana University and am currently working on my DM. I was born in Switzerland in 1989, and have performed in wide variety of cultures and venues, from television soundtrack recording in Thailand, to full opera productions. Currently finishing my Doctorate at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, I am equally comfortable performing in studio recordings, opera pits or symphonic stages. In addition to being a member of Santa Monica Symphony, American Youth Symphony, Columbus Philharmonic and Redlands Symphony, I am a dedicated chamber musician, performing with Volante Winds as well as recording Mahler’s Symphony No 9 with the Kammermahler ensemble.
I have performed with American Youth Symphony, Redlands Symphony Orchestra and Columbus
Philharmonic as well as being a finalist for Macau Symphony and semi-finalist for New World Symphony. I have also performed in sections with Dale Clevenger, Jeff Nelsen and Elizabeth Freimuth. My teaching style relies on simplifying breathing and focusing on achieving the best possible musical results. I take into account each student's goals and desires and tailor lessons to get the end result they want. I have worked with many beginning students as well so whether your goal is an upcoming school or ensemble audition or just trying to sound as beautiful as possible I will help you achieve your goals.
I also have a minor in music theory as well as years of theory tutor experience ranging from teaching how to read music notation to Schenkerian analysis.

I have been teaching French horn for 22 years. I have an earned Masters degree in music and enjoy teaching students of all ages. I am happily married with 5 children at home--4 of them are musicians as well (the youngest is 4).. It is extremely rewarding watching students have fun, excel, and fall in love with making music. I presently teach music at 3 schools (1 college) and only have a few lessons slots available. I look forward to working with you.

I have been teaching all ages and levels of French horn for 10 years. I believe in teaching outside the book, to give each one of my students an individualized plan to reach their goals. I will always go above and beyond to steer you in the right direction, and to make your music experience last a lifetime.

Students can expect to be appropriately challenged with repertoire, in a supportive, communicative environment. I am happy to work on school repertoire, pop tunes or music from the standard repertoire. I believe in efficiency and getting the most out of your practice time. We all lead busy lives, I will teach you how to accomplish your goals with the time you want to invest.

Unfortunately I do not teach beginners online, only in person. It is impossible to develop the appropriate sound and skills without being there in person. I can help you find someone in your area, please feel free to reach out!

About Jessica
Thanks for checking out my teaching profile! I currently live in New York City (Queens) where I freelance and teach a variety of students. As the school year is about to begin, I have availability during the week and on Saturdays. I suggest booking sooner rather than later! Please feel free to send me a personal message if you have any questions.

I have experience teaching beginners, both young and adult! I include music theory and history into each lesson but am also available for tutoring. I have taught masterclasses at high schools and universities, and am currently working on my own pedagogical resource for brass teachers.

I specialize in teaching the basics of how to play the horn correctly with the goal of getting the student's sound to be enjoyable so that practice is not a chore.

About Benjamin
I started playing horn at age 11 in Dunbar, Wisconsin and continued to play and take lessons on through middle and high school, participating in several competitions, and and went on to study at the college level and graduated with my bachelor's degree in French horn performance from Bob Jones University in 2011 and I've played with community and semi-professional groups since then.

I specializes in teaching the fundamentals of playing the horn correctly to make the best tone possible. The main goal of this approach to teaching is to get my students to enjoy hearing themselves play which in turn will encourage the student to continue practicing because it will be enjoyable!

Philosophy of teaching music: The goal of teaching music should be simply to improve the person to whom music is being taught, whether the goal of the student is t
o make a career in music, or simply to help the student reach his potential.

The reason anyone would want to play horn is the horn is because it provides more of a challenge to master than any other brass instrument. It also provides you with the opportunity to play in a band, which gives you a sense of teamwork and accomplishment when rehearsing and performing concerts.

Expect to learn faster and funner while exploring valuable skills & musical ideas each lesson!

My 30 years in music has taken me around the world performing with San Francisco Symphony, Broadway Musicals, Operas, Rock Bands, and more.

I've worked with thousands of pro musicians & students on 3 continents. Teamwork and respectful collaboration are core values.

About Marc
Hi I'm Marc, a professional French hornist & founder of a music edtech startup in San Francisco.

I am so excited about helping musicians learn and achieve their goals. Everybody has musical talent. But far too often, music learners don't get the right teacher to help them express that talent.

Even though I started playing music at age 5, my own talents stayed hidden for far too long. I struggled at music all through middle school and high school. When I was 18, I went to Northwestern and studied learning sciences.

Ho ho ho! After graduating I applied science to learning French horn, studied at America's #1 music school (Indiana University), and got a full time orchestra job in just 2 years. I played 6 seasons with Hong Kong Philharmonic. I also served as Professor of Horn at HK Baptist University.

After learning Kung Fu & Yog
a, I applied those to music, and my career went even further. I've recorded & toured with San Francisco Symphony, played with Yo-Yo Ma, and even run my own music learning camps.
