John G.

Spring Valley, CA

About John

I am a 34 year old Trumpet, French Horn and Voice Instructor in the Ramona area. I have 24 years experience playing trumpet, French Horn and Singing and play in several groups around the
San Diego area including:
The Amalgamated, a Ska/Reggae Band
Full Strength Funk Band
Heartland Brass Ensemble
Trumpets R Us
Filarmonica Portuguesa Uniao De San Diego
Tierrasanta Lutheran Church,
Ramona High School Trumpet and French Horn Coach

I am very passionate about music, from learning to teaching, practicing, performing and recording. Every day my goal is to promote music, learn, prac
tice and help people enjoy music either by listening or performing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will start with good solid warm-up exercises focusing on breathing and proper technique for Brass playing.
The 2nd part of lessons will be technique, Scales and method books for trumpet and french horn.
The last part of lessons will be working on Solo repertoire and learning songs for performance, sight reading, playing duets and learning jazz improvisation if interested. Lessons will include sight reading, play along/sing along CD's Scales and technique as well as theory.

For my Trumpet Students I use Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies Book to help improve aerobic endurance, technical and finger velocity as well as production of good tone quality. I will also use the Earl Irons Group of 27 exercises as well as the Max Schlossberg Method to help improve air flow, breathing control and fluidity of sound throughout all registers. I also use the J. B. Arban's Conservatory method for other techniques including scales, double and triple tonguing, intervals as well as duets and solo repertoire.
For jazz minded students I will start with basic fundamentals of improvisation including melodic improv, Blues forms and blues scales as well as reading through chord changes and playing in several modes and other scales used in jazz.

For my French Horn Students I will use the same technique books as Trumpet but learning traditional French Horn Solo repertoire, as well as Brass quintet/choir repertoire and orchestral and concert repertoire. Focus for French Horn students will be mainly on control of partials and tuning techniques.

For my Voice students I will start with good breathing technique and warm up exercises designed to get the vocal chords warmed up and get all the other muscles relaxed in order to produce great tone quality. Focus will be on intonation, and learning to use the air and support to extend the vocalists range higher and lower as well as gain power and confidence in singing.
Each Vocal student will have a piece to practice or will bring a piece of their choosing in that they would like to learn and this will be used to apply the techniques learned at the beginning of lessons. Styles of singing that I sing and can teach are Classical, Jazz, Big Band and Standards, Oldies, Pop, Country, Soul, Rock, R&B, Christian Rock and Church Music and also harmonizing like in a duet style or choir/vocal ensemble setting. I will also teach performance techniques, showmanship, stage presence and the overall performance package every singer needs to have confidence while singing.

I am a classically trained musician on Trumpet, French Horn and Voice and reading music, articulations, dynamics and learning musical forms is an essential part to any performers success. I also have studied various jazz styles and improvisational techniques as well. I want to teach students the basics of good musicianship and help them to excel in learning, practicing and performing in their own selected styles of music, whether its classical music, or jazz/rock/pop/country and any other styles students are interested in.

*** Studio Equipment ***

My main teaching location is at the Ramona Music Center in downtown Ramona for students in the area. I have all items needed including music stands, CD player for play along programs as well as an upright piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling I can bring my own personal music stand and electric keyboard with stand as well. Technique and song repertoire and theory books I can provide when needed.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Jazz, Reggae, Ska, Pop, Rock, Hard Rock, Funk, Soul, R&B, Blues, Church/Worship.

Alex M.

Bonita, CA

About Alex

I am passionate about sharing with you all the knowledge that I've obtained from over 45 years of of studying piano with some of the best teachers available in the country. I will help you to both discover that sound image that is only yours and then to work on how to make that image come alive for you at the keyboard. I promise that working together will be a fun and inspiring adventure into that most expressive form of communications which is Music. One of the best ways to judge a teacher is by the way he plays. I am a performing teacher, still studying, and will be giving my second solo rec
ital at The Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad in February 2013 and will be playing masterpieces by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt. You are, of course, invited to the recital or it would be my pleasure to play for you at my studio or your home. Looking forward to sharing and learning more about our craft by spending some quality musical time with one another.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am considered to be a easy going guy but it is my job to be sure that value is obtained from investment, so I will let my students know when they are not completing their reasonable assignments. That said, I can't wait to share with you all the joys I feel about teaching. I didn't know anything about the piano at age 21 but seven years later I gave my Senior Recital and earned my BA degree with a Piano Major so I know how difficult it can be to start lessons as well as being able to advance at any level. We will learn how to understand basic theory to include notation, intervals, chord structure, scales and arpeggios and well as to learn or improve your ability to sight read without having to continually look down at your hands. All technical problems will be understood and solved so that you will be able to play those pieces you love at your ability level. Being able to play with a firm knowledge of a composer's life, his composition style and historical background is a sure sign of one that has studied with a fine teacher. It is my hopes that that teacher will be me. Thank you for your time and consideration.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room area w/ grand piano seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
A Piano and assigned sheet music

*** Specialties ***
Have in depth knowledge in the Taubman Approach, the Whitside Piano Technique and the Mathay System

Reviews From Students and Parents (Piano - Guitar - Voice)

“I just wanted to say Thank You and let you know how much I appreciate all the information and help you have given Mikey. You helped him form a great hobby that he loves to do and the f
amily loves to hear. He has come so far since his first lesson and I am happy you kept the Piano lessons interesting for him. Thanks again for being a kind, great teacher to him.” - Cheryl, 5 Stars!

“Steven B, a patient, gifted teacher has supervised my studies on guitar with good humor, wit and flexibility.  I would recommend him without hesitation to players young and old.” - Tim, 5 Stars!

“I took voice and piano lessons in Steven B’s Coronado Music Studio and also online via Skype.  Both experiences were great, and it was really convenient to do the lessons on Skype.  Steven B is an excellent teacher, and he is very patient.  I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument or sing!” - Kat , 5 Stars!

“Steven B’s fun and patient teaching style rocks. I see how his bright, fun-loving personality, and knowledge of music for piano makes him top choice as my daughter’s music instructor.” - Anthony, 5 Stars!

“Steven B is a wonderful teacher!  He is talented, always enthusiastic, and extremely motivational! Each lesson is designed specifically for our daughter Kelsey's ability and desired genre of music! Kelsey began guitar and vocal lessons in the Coronado studio and is now taking lessons via Skype since our move to Virginia.  The lessons are convenient, affordable, and productive. We are excited to be able to still have Steven B as her guitar and vocal teacher!” - Amy, 5 Stars!

“I came to Steven B as a beginner in piano and I took the piano lessons on my Casio keyboard. I just wanted to learn my favorite songs. Steven B got me into the music I really enjoy!  In only three months, I was able to play and sing a song I truly love titled “Angel” from Sarah McLachian.  My teacher said I performed it as well as the artist. My friends, loved my performance of the song!” - Katrina, 5 Stars!

“My son has taken guitar and voice lessons with Steven B for the last year.  We are pleased with classes and the improvement we've seen in comparison to a previous instructor.  Steven B is punctual and extremely respectful of the time and money it takes to provide lessons.  He can be counted on to be both friendly and professional.  He comes prepared for lessons and expects the same of his students.  If you are serious about learning and improving your skills, we highly recommend him.” - Christina, 5 Stars!

“My time in being instructed by Steven B on piano was a great, informative experience. Ever since the first lesson, he is a very good teacher that clearly knows what he is doing. Mr. Bruce taught me at my own pace, taking time to help me work on skills, especially small details that help me perform much better. He is a very skilled instructor, teaching me pieces from not only music books that he provides, but also the valuable skill of learning by ear, a skill few other teachers bother to touch on. Steven B has helped on a number of occasions with songs that I am learning on my own and fit time into our lessons to work on them. He is always willing to let the student work on what they like as well as what he gives out. When I once mentioned my liking for jazz, we soon started an in-depth series of lessons into the genre, teaching me much more than I ever knew prior to it. I’ve never felt pressured by my assignments and pieces to bring home, as Steven B knows everyone goes at their own pace and can take anytime from a few days to a few weeks to learn a song. My time with him was a very fun and informative time that I thoroughly enjoyed.” - Michael, 5 Stars!

Mr. Steve Bruce is a dedicated and professional instructor. He not only appreciates his students, but is committed to see them progress as musicians. He let's them know that they can go as far as they want with their music; they just need to do this one thing: do your homework-->practice, practice, practice, he will work on the rest. Both my daughters have been taking lessons with Steve for over 4 yrs and have the confidence to play in front of a group, they are only 8 & 9 yrs old. If you are looking to find a teacher who is committed to you, then Steve is the right instructor.

I have known Steven Bruce for many years. When my girlfriend Gloria said to me "I'd like to take piano lessons," our choice for teacher was easy. From the very start, Steve showed patience, skill, understanding, knowledge and a warm sense of humor. To feel confident in his guidance, consistency and care is very comforting. His empathy in moving Gloria along the early stages was truly appreciated. I knew this would be the case, because our teacher is passionate, creative, unique and also happens to be one of the kindest individuals I've ever known. Please consider Steven, if you happen to be looking for an incredibly complete music teacher.

About Souaad

Hello there, curious musician to be!

I am a competitive individual and I like to challenge and to be challenged. I started playing violin when I was 10 and have performed with several Honors Orchestras, mariachis, as well as some professional groups. My Junior and Senior year of high school I was honored to be Concertmaster.

I began my classical vocal training at San Diego State University in Spring of 2012. I was trained as a Soprano and an Alto because of my coachability, and versatility. Since then I have worked with several talented and dynamic directors throughout my training expe
rience. I have attended the annual San Diego Summer Choral Festival under the direction of Dr. Patrick Walders, which consisted of an intensive choral training weekend followed by performances. I am also part of a growing professional choir in San Diego called Pro Arte Voices, which recently debuted its first CD in December '14 (!!). Lastly, I am a strong advocate for the arts in our community and am very proud to be a teacher. In the near future I have plans of developing a music program for underprivileged youth, which would incorporate choir, orchestra and band. I look forward to making music with you soon :)

Adrián T.

San Diego, CA

About Adrián

Adrián T.: Born on October 17, 1975, and raised in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México, Adrian grew up surrounded by the traditional music of Central America from Danzón, Boleros and Rumba, to Son and Mambo. T. began developing his musical ability starting at the age of eleven. He was inclined to play the flute and the tenor saxophone with an understanding of classical music and a distinct attraction to jazz, and five years later chose to take on the clarinet. His grandmother, a "Danzón Nut" according to T., urged her grandson in that direction, but the young player was adamant towards a newfound par
agon for himself: Hubert Laws.

2001 was a year that would have a profound impact on T.’s music. While pursuing Sociology and Music Studies at The University of Texas, El Paso, he learned more about the transmission of these ideas and theories through music. In an effort to track the development of marked philosophical and spiritual traditions observed by ancient cultures, T.arranged to meet, learn, and creatively collaborate with musicians involved with traditions originating from West Africa. One of his primary interests was the Yoruba tradition (predominantly out of Western Nigeria), the ancient African religion underlying Santeria (Cuba and Puerto Rico), Candombl (Baha, Brazil), Vodun (Haiti), and Cu Taan (México).

In May 2002 T. was diagnosed with Cancer that spread to his stomach and abdomen, treatments included surgery and extensive radiation treatment to the stomach and abdomen. In 2004, he was declared cancer free and in the same year he joined the band The Mars Volta as a full-flesh member.

THE MARS VOLTA
In 2004 T. joined The Mars Volta recording the studio album, “Frances the Mute”, and continues to work with the band (as a full-fledged member) on subsequent albums (“Live Scabdates” 2005, “Amputechture” 2006, “The Bedlam in Goliath” 2008) and all of The Mars Volta side projects (movie scores, DVD‘s, etc.). The Mars Volta is comprised of guitarist Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez, lyricist/vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, bassist John Alderete, guitarist Paul Hinojos-González, drummer Thomas Pridgen, percussionist Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, and keyboardist Isaiah “Ikey” Owens. Through his work with The Mars Volta, T. went on to earn his first Grammy Award in 2008 for the “Best Rock Performance” category with
the song "Wax Simulacra". Working with The Mars Volta has enabled T. to gain further exposure as a multi-instrumentalist, particularly in Europe.

Television performances of The Mars Volta include (but not limited to): The Henry Rollins Show, The Tonight Show with David Letterman, and The BBC.

THE STUDIO/TOURING MUSICIAN
T.’s solid performance and versatility have allowed him many opportunities to collaborate with a vast array of professionals worldwide. T. has shared the stage and/or recorded with the likes of Larry Harlow, Antonio Sánchez, Bob Sheppard, Edwin Livingston, Erik A. Unsworth, Dr. Willy Hill, Dr. Donald G. Wilkinson, Damo Suzuki, Lenny Castro, Money Mark Nishita, Los Lobos, EMI Gospel Artist Smokie Norful, Lisa Papineau (Big Sir), Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez Quintet/Group (Se Dice Bisonte, No Búfalo 2007, music scoring for the Guillermo Arriaga Jordan and Jorge Hernández Aldana film on El Búfalo de la Noche on La Neta Films/Naco Films performed by The Mars Volta), Hans Glawishing, John Beasley, Brian Lynch, Shaila Dúrcal, John Frusciante, Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders), Ken Schalk, Juliette Lewis, Nuriya Michan, Deantoni Parks, Candiria, The Memorials, Trevor Hall, Oscar Stagnaro, Billy Ray Cyrus, David "FuZe" Fiuczynski and Freedom Bremner of Screaming Headless Torsos, Pete Escobedo, Oskar Cartaya, Hadrien Feraud, and Luis Conte, Jack Costanzo among others.

T.’s professional involvement with the music industry has continued to develop under his own publishing and record label, EL REGIMEN Music BMI, leading T.R.A.M. and as a led member of one of the strongest lineups in improvisational music TRANSIENT. This dignified and prolific musician collaborates with an eclectic number of international musicians, tours internationally on an intense and annual schedule, all the while teaching workshops to numerous school districts and universities around the globe. T. has also had the great honor of being featured on 2014's Channel 22 México and Channel 22 International.

T.R.A.M.
It's extremely rare to come across a band that flips the script of conventionality, throwing caution to the wind. The debut effort from T.R.A.M. (T., Reyes, Abasi, Moore) does just that, while blazing a trail of creativity quick to turn heads throughout the world. This unit will easily be referred to by many as a “Super Group”. However, the members of this dynamic unit aren't in this for any reason other than to use it as a platform to further express their art without limitations or any preconceived notions.

T.R.A.M. is comprised of such renowned and musically proficient artists as Adrián T. (The Mars Volta) on saxophone, flute, bass clarinet and percussion, Javier Reyes (Animals As Leaders) on guitar, Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders) on guitar, and Eric Moore II (Suicidal Tendencies) on drums. This is a group of like-minded individuals that are naturally gifted with the collaboration of their unique talents resulting in something truly amazing. Their much anticipated debut album, “Lingua Franca”, was released February 2012 through Sumerian Records.

T. states:

“Tosin Abasi and I were originally introduced by a mutual friend, Raanen Bozzio (Terry Bozzio's son), summer of 2010. This meeting also served as my first introduction to Animals As Leaders and Javier Reyes. Since then, Abasi, Reyes, and I have developed a great relationship. We got together almost every day to try out ideas, and after a month we had already formulated a majority of the record. At this point we contacted Eric Moore, an incredible drummer and the most joyful person to be around, and soon everything we had envisioned rhythmically came together on our first meeting/recording session (at the Farias Productions Studios) on what is now T.R.A.M…
I never know how people will respond to our music, I just never know! My goal is to try to instill a strong feeling or energy in people and I feel that collectively we achieved this goal tenfold with this new project. We all have a great enthusiasm and desire to perform this material live and see this band further develop. We look forward to hearing what you all think of it.”

Adrián T. TRANSIENT
A concept ensemble with its roots in west coast music, TRANSIENT performs original music inspired by the tradition of Chamber Music and Contemporary Jazz on today's world. This genuine ensemble led by flautist Adrian T.(The Mars Volta, and T.R.A.M.), followed by cellist Artyom Manukyan (Peter Erskine and The Joe Zawinul's Syndicate), and on the drums the powerful young lion Tim "Figg" Newton, brings a collection of original compositions written as a story line of work of solid experimental material and improvisation. Translating the live performance into the world of sound.

TRANSIENT exists as a unique new voice comprised of some of creative music's fearless players on the globe.

Adrián and I have now played together many times, and each time I have learned something new about myself. Interacting musically with Adrian has allowed me to expand my compositional horizon, and my understanding of the geography of my own instrument.

Adrián's experience and creativity is unparalleled by nearly anyone you will find in his field, especially when one considers his versatility as a woodwind doubler (sax, flute, clarinet, etc.) in genres including classical, jazz, experimental rock, and traditional mexican folk music.

If you are so lucky to have the opportunity, I would strongly recommend you study with Adrián.
