About Jessie
I hold a Masters of Music in Violin Pedagogy from Boise State University. I have been playing the violin for eighteen years. I have performed in a variety of ensembles from 180-person full orchestra and chorus in Eisenstadt, Austria, to a string quartet in a Beatles tribute band. I have been teaching private lessons for about eight years, mostly to beginning and intermediate level students.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach primarily from the Suzuki violin method with some additional resources to create a well-rounded knowledge of the violin. In addition to learning to play certain pieces on the violin students will develop various basic music skills and techniques, such as a theory and history of music. The main goal of my teaching, however, is to instill a love of music and the arts in each and every student I teach.

*** Studio
Equipment ***
My home studio is equipped with a piano, music stand, music theory and ear training games, as well as a vast library of method books and supplemental materials.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson plans and some technology. I expect students to have their own instruments and cleaning materials, as well as the appropriate music. Occasionally we will need access to a piano. If there is no piano at the student's home we will need to meet at a location to practice with one.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in the Suzuki violin method.

Very patient and professional

Jessie is very patient, professional, flexible. I'm a college student and busy with school work, but I still learned a lot from her, not only in violin skills, but also music theory and so on. She also teaches me how to practice instead of just showing me the pieces.

Gives you confidence in your own abilities

Jessie taught my daughter from June 2011-Dec 2012. She has been an excellent teacher for my 4 year old. It is really a challenge to keep kids focused at this age and Jessie was always up for the challenge. She simplified things down to really basic tasks that the kids can do and more importantly enjoy the learning experience.

During the period our little girl developed the confidence to play in front of a large audience. She could compose her own variations and play it with authority.

Jessie was always on time and professional with her approach. She always brought prints for parents to follow through on the lessons. It made practices at home really simple for us. We could see progress in our daughter's abilities every week.

We felt sorry that we could not continue on with her because of us relocating to a different city and her move as well. I would greatly recommend her for your violin lessons.

For the vocal students wh
o would like to participate we do singing performances at Retirement Homes . I have many costumes from which to choose for the characters. Some of our favorite shows are Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music , Disney and Phantom of The Opera.

Mrs. Calahan truly changed my life. Without her, I would not have the passion and talent for singing and piano that I have. Her instruction provided me so many opportunities to showcase my work and earn roles with other companies. I highly recommend taking both piano and voice lessons from her. She’s extremely knowledgeable in all things music, you could not find a more experience teacher.

I have four children, all take lessons from Carolyn. We’ve been with her for 12 years, since my oldest started in 2nd grade. She’s now teaching my youngest.

All of my children have progressed nicely. Carolyn allows the kids to play various types of music once they past the beginner stage. . My son, who has only taken a couple of years, has mastered Bohemian Rhaposody which is no small feat!

She has two recitals a year and is understanding if a lesson needs to be switched every now and then.

I highly recommend Carolyn.

I've just started with Carolyn and have had only 3 lessons. She is very patient and encouraging. I have been singing in church choirs and community choirs most of my life. Just recently, I joined a non audition choral society that performs classical music and more demanding music. I was told that no one wanted to sit beside me because I was singing the wrong notes. If they thought that would deter me, they were wrong. I did drop out of the spring concert because I didn't have much time to improve. I have always wanted to take singing lessons but never created the opportunity. I am determined to learn to sing well and to join the choral society for the Christmas concert. I believe that Carolyn is the teacher who can help me achieve this goal.

About Jessica
Dear students and parents,

Hello and welcome to takelessons.com! My name is Jessica and I am classically trained violinist with over 20 years of playing experience. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and recently relocated to Saint Louis County with my family. Music has always been passion of mine since a very young age, so it was inevitable that it would end up being my career. Naturally, a love for teaching the wonders of music followed suit!

I always try to form a great rapport with my students and parents from the very first lesson. For younger students, I encourage my parents to take an active part in both lessons and daily practice, as is encouraged by Shinichi Suzuki.

I've been teaching violin and viola professionally for over 12 years now. My experience includes teaching private lessons at students homes as wel
l as at various music schools, summer camps and festivals. A few advanced students have even attended and performed in some of these aforementioned festivals! I am always encouraging my students to go above and beyond.

A bit of background about me: I started my music studies at the age of 7. Lessons and orchestra were literally the highlight of my childhood. I ended up attending the Baltimore School for the Arts for high school, and went on to receive my Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Shenandoah University and complete further studies in England, Northern Ireland and Maryland (UMBC graduate certificate). I am also a registered Suzuki Violin/Viola teacher and have attended many teachers workshops in order to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to work with any and all types of students, including those with learning disabilities, such as ADD and FAS.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I am a registered Suzuki violin teacher, I do not teach solely out of a certain method or "by the book"; I choose and mold every lesson depending on specific, strengths, weaknesses, etc. If you are a more advanced, serious player, more intensive lessons and repertoire will follow suit.

I am comfortable teaching all ages and levels up to advanced. Use of games make learning the violin fun and accessible for young children. Older and more advanced students receive a more technical, intensive and advanced approach. Coaching and weekly help on school assigned materials (orchestra/string class music and homework) Classical, Jazz, Gypsy and Fiddle styles are all introduced and studied to give students a rounded technique. Music theory (reading and understanding music) is incorporated in lessons. Repertoire is diverse and exciting. Various approaches for the visual or aural learner. Guaranteed to keep you or your child engaged and interested!

*** Equipment and Studio Lesson Details ***

-If you are coming to my home for lessons, please be sure to bring your instrument and any books you may already have.

New students:
You may park on the cul-de-sac next to the house and walk down.
I have a trial 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 size violin to use for the first lesson if your child is a beginner.
After the first lesson I will send an email explaining what materials and equipment I recommend you buy to help you sound your best.

Places to rent or buy instruments will be recommended upon request.

*** Cancellation/Reschedule Requests ***
1) At least 24 hours notice is required if you need to cancel your, or your child's, lesson. You will be given the option to take a credit that will automatically roll over to cover future unpaid lessons on your calendar, or the option to reschedule for a different day within a week of the canceled lesson.

2) If you find that you need to cancel with less than 24 hours notice you will be given the option to make up your lesson within 7 calendar days of your originally scheduled lesson time. If you cannot do a makeup lesson, this will result in the lesson being marked as "missed" and will still be charged as if you attended the lesson.

3) If you do not show up to your lesson scheduled at my home studio and no notice was given, the lesson will be marked as "missed" and will still be charged as if you attended the lesson.

4) If I need to reschedule or cancel a lesson for whatever reason, you will be given an option for a makeup lesson or given a credit that will automatically roll over to cover future unpaid lessons.

5) I require two weeks notice to discontinue lessons if you would like to receive a refund or be exempt from paying future tuition.

6) All lessons are billed ahead of schedule and must be paid in advance in order to keep your lesson slot.

If I could give Brian 10 stars, I would. He is enthusiastic, present, supportive and highly knowledgeable. Learning instruments has always been a challenge for me , but Brian makes being a banjo beginner an absolute joy. I look forward to practicing every day, and can really hear my progress - which amazes me because it's only been just over a month. I can see myself working with Brian for the long haul. I am a singer, piano player, and church choir director. I graduated from Central College in Pella, IA with a BA in biology and music, specifically vocal performance and pedagogy.

I have had the opportunity to sing with world renowned artists, including Gabriel Espinosa, Kim Nazarian, Ethan Butler, and more! This has given me great insight into the music business and the importance of networking.

Creating individualized lessons for each student is the name of my game. I enjoy creating music with my students and troubleshooting during each lesson. I am always reading on the latest techniques and repertoire for students of all ages, to make sure my students are getting the best and newest information.

A BA in music also requires a large amount of music theory and history, which I enjoy adding into lessons. If interested in a more
in depth study into this, I would be happy to add more into each lesson! Understanding context of a piece of music is incredibly important to know before singing it, which is why I like to go over just a little bit of history with each piece.

I enjoy teaching all styles of music; Broadway, classical, gospel, pop, and everything in between! Know that the foundation for all of these styles is the same, so if you are interested in learning multiple styles, it will be easy to do!

I look forward to meeting with you and creating together!
