Vince began playing trumpet in 1998. He attended lessons at elementary school. Vince soon won principle chair in school ensembles; later with select county and state wide ensembles. He competed in annual solo competitions performing classical and jazz trumpet throughout middle and high school.

I took trumpet and music theory lessons from Mr Talley He has a wealth of knowledge and experience. I highly recommend him and look forward to my next lesson from him.
Derrek
My brother took lessons from Mr. Talley before me, and when I got into Band I started too.  Thanks to Mr. Talley I  made 1st chair in the Region Band twice on Tuba.  When I switched to Euphonium in high school, he was right there helping me with the change from Tuba.  I made the Region Band again on a new instrument only a few weeks after I switched, and he was the reason why.  He always seemed to know exactly what I needed to do to get better.  Even now, years later, I can still call him any time and ask him about music and he always helps me.
Derrek
My mom made me take lessons from Mr. Talley when I was a little kid because my brothers loved him so much.  I thought he was kind of crazy at first, but when I started doing the things he said I got WAY better.  Now I can see what he was doing – he just knew EVERYTHING about trombone, so I got really good.  Even though I don’t play in band any more since I graduated high school, I still sometimes get my instrument out and play for fun.  I always hear his crazy sayings in my head, which makes me enjoy it.  You should sign up – my mom always said he was worth every penny because he helped her raise us into good people.  I didn’t get that when I was a kid, but I understand now.  He taught me more than music – he taught me how to think smarter.

"William is probably one of the only players that I've seen understand the ins and outs of trumpet playing at his age. He really helped me out early into high school and has continued to inspire me in trumpet playing. While taking a lesson he evaluates every aspect of playing and gives lots of instruction that applies to much of trumpet playing. The inspiration he gives is the most essential trait he shares with students. William is a positive influence and an amazing teacher!"

"I have known Vinnie for 35 years in the world of music. He is a colleague that I hold in the highest regard. I have had the great pleasure of performing alongside him in a number of different situations. As a sideman we have performed music on an extremely high level, everything from Jazz Standards, originals, to Weather Report etc. Vinnie's abilities as trumpeter and educator are tremendous, world class all across the board. He is great reader and his improvisation is of the highest order, creative, inventive, with thematic development and harmonic depth in the single line."

"Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity."
