About Diego
"Diego is a fantastic teacher and guitarist. He is generous and patient, encouraging and effective. Diego has the ability to simplify difficult technique and break it down in simple terms. His studies in Spain make him a rare and sought after teacher in Chicago. In short, Diego has given me the keys to succeed in this beautiful and challenging art form. I wholeheartedly recommend him!"
-- Marty M. (M.A. Education, B.A. Jazz Guitar, Professional Guitarist)

Diego studied flamenco and classical guitar for 21 years and has performed and taught both professionally for 16 years nationally and internationally. He is one of Chicago's most sought-after Spanish, Flamenco, & Classical guitar instructors and coaches and has taught over 5000 private lessons and has given lectures and workshops in over 300 universities, elementary schools, and musi
c schools.

After 15 annual visits to Spain to study with master flamenco teachers, Diego finally moved to Seville for 3 years where he graduated with honors in flamenco guitar performance from the Fundacion Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco. While living in Spain Diego developed his knowledge and skill by performing flamenco guitar 2-4 nights a week with some of Spain's top up and coming flamenco performers. His extensive training and experience in flamenco guitar make him a highly qualified teacher in the field.

Lessons are based on time-tested methods in guitar pedagogy as well as on up-to-date scientific research in the neurological and psychological processes of skill acquisition and expertise. My goal, as a teacher, is to help students learn HOW to practice effectively and efficiently in order to develop the neurological pathways necessary to form, improve, and maintain high-level, musical skills.

WHAT KIND OF GUITAR DO YOU NEED?
For flamenco or classical lessons, you will need a nylon-string guitar (e.g., classical or flamenco), NOT a steel string guitar. If you don't own a nylon-string guitar, you can certainly rent one, but it must be available to you for home practice AT LEAST 6 days/week.

******IMPORTANT*****
Please check with me BEFORE booking a lesson to check availability.

I encourage my students to pursue all types of music. I like to use “method books” to help with reading and music theory no matter which instrument they choose. I always use supplemental materials that follow the student’s interests and level. I often use technology in lessons to motivate and help students grow. For example, I use many apps for theory, note reading, and rhythm training.

A cancellation 24hrs in advance is always appreciated.

Matthew is awesome, I have tried taking lesson twice before and he is by far the best instructor I’ve ever had. It’s nice to know he cares about his student as much as he cares about the music and instrument he is teaching. I would highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for lessons!!!

Matt is great. He is very patient and customizes his lessons to the students needs and interests. We have been using him for over two years and my teenage son has developed a passion for the piano and enjoys exploring and learning new concepts. He has learned the gambit of songs from classical to rock to pop and more. It is a pleasure to see my son take an interest in the piano and great to have a teacher that encourages him. Also,I get the benefit of enjoying beautiful music.

About Michael
Expressing yourself is the ultimate goal of music and my job is to help you get your point across!

Like any musician, music is my life.
I love to soak it in any way I can! Whether it be listening to records, jamming with my friends or watching all the live concert footage of Stevie Ray Vaughan I can get my hands on.

I graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor’s of Art in Music with a concentration on guitar performance. Throughout my undergraduate studies I performed in various ensembles within the college’s curriculum. Currently, my solo project gives me the opportunity to continue to grow through writing and performing my own original pieces. Throughout my career I have had the honor of performing with renowned songwriters Todd Rundgren and Charlie Sexton as well as being mentored by jazz drummer Frank Donaldson of
The Ramsey Lewis Quartet.

*** Lesson Details ***

Studying at the college level taught me a lot about what not to do as a teacher. The material is already difficult enough, so why would I be difficult with you?

I strive to be more of a mentor and friend rather than taskmaster. However, I do require structure and commitment to getting better. My curriculum will revolve around you and your needs with added material that I feel will help you succeed.

A typical lesson plan includes:

 physical technique

 chord and scale knowledge,

 soloing concepts

 and tying all of these ideas together by learning a song in a genre you love!

All of these concepts culminate in the discovery of your own personal voice!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My teaching studio is just steps away from the Belmont Blue Line stop! Our lessons will be held in a private practice space in my home. The large room has multiple amps and guitars, so there is no need to bring an instrument for lessons if you don't want to! (But, you do need an instrument to practice with outside of our lessons!)

About Penny
ABOUT PENNY R.

I graduated from college in Virginia with a Bachelor of Music Education degree as a voice major, and minored in piano and violin. My teaching certificate was for vocal, instrumental and general music, grades K - 12, and I graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Graduate school brought me to Indiana, where I earned a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance. Migrating up to the Chicago area from there, I taught at a private music school (voice and small ensembles, as well as many faculty performances) before staying at home to raise our children, and teaching voice lessons privately in my Studio. After 30 years of teaching, I'm still at it, and I still love it!

I am a Permanent Professional member of Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA), a National Certified Teacher of Music with the Illinois State Music Teacher's Associ
ation (ISMTA), a member of the West Suburban Chapter of ISMTA, as well as a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing. Most of my students are high school aged, but I have taught from ages seven through 70. My students regularly achieve MTNA's Music Achievement Award, are selected for District Choir and All-State Choir, as well as receive leading roles in high school and community musicals.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that singing does something to words which nothing else can--it puts feelings to music. Everyone has feelings, and everyone can be musical. Those who pursue their vocal education can be rewarded with confidence in their ability to sing. The goal of my Studio is to promote the study of music, and to create a musical environment at each lesson so that every person's individual potential can become realized - all while having fun!

My Studio provides a nurturing environment for all singers, from beginning to advanced, children to adults. I will help you develop and maintain your vocal health, expand your vocal range, and develop your musicianship. You will learn to integrate a coordinated process of breath, pitch and tone, while exploring your vocal potential in a wide range of contemporary and classic musical styles. Teaching proper vocal technique is my primary goal with every student: fixing what is being used incorrectly, and enhancing what is already done well. I will work with you on any style of repertoire you desire: classical, opera, Broadway, jazz, folk, etc. I love it when a student wants a variety of song! And if your music theory skills are weak, we'll take care of that, too!

LESSONS

Children eighth grade and younger should sign up for half hour lessons; students high school and older should sign up for 45 minute lessons.

I am so excited to share the joy of making music with my new TakeLessons students! We get right into breathing, first thing. Once that is right, we can turn our attention to what's going on with the throat and mouth. All the while, we are learning songs by which we can practice whatever we're working on in the exercises. Everybody's different, with different tensions, both proper and antagonistic. We isolate the muscular tensions that are interfering with your perfect sound, and go from there!

*** Lesson Details ***
Come prepared to make a lot of noises with which you don't normally sing! We will explore every sound you are capable of - there's something to learn from most of them! Obviously, we'll concentrate on the ones we really want to sing with, while using a myriad of vocal exercises.

My studio brochure will explain many of the nuts and bolts of our lessons, and any expectations regarding practicing, keyboard ability and access, and how we work home practice when you don't know how to play piano. Generally, we spend about half the lesson time on warm ups/exercises, and half the time on songs. Sometimes we memorize them; sometimes we polish them; sometimes we just learn them quickly and move on to new things. Each lesson is a little different, depending on what I'm hearing from you that day.

I'm always happy to help you with school/church solos, audition material, choral parts, etc. Otherwise, we will choose repertoire together, taking into account your goals and interests, along with what makes good teaching material. Come join the fun and make some music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My basement rec room serves as my teaching studio, so there are stairs with which to contend. Parents may stay either in the studio, or up in my living room to wait. The fully equipped studio contains a piano, audio-visual equipment for recording and play back, music stands, stools, a comfortable couch, and even a sink for quick water drinks! (Singing can make you thirsty!)

*** Specialties ***
In my 30+ years of teaching private lessons, I've amassed quite a toolbox of eclectic musical resources. That said, I still find muscle manipulative exercises while vocalizing to be the quickest route for most students to have success in building their long term voice. So I utilize those techniques frequently. With proper, healthy vocal production, a student can sing in any genre they choose. I am very concerned about producing a healthy voice with a free tone, particularly for children, so that all students can go forward into whatever style they choose with good vocal production.

"No matter what style of music you want to play, the language of music is the same. Learn the 7 aspects of guitar and you will be able to play the music you love."

Some people find their passion early in life, and for Bob M., that's absolutely true. At age 13, he played the guitar at his first musical gig, and many years later, he continues to play guitar professionally and teach others through his highly popular music lessons.

Well educated at the American Conservatory of Music, Bob spent years studying harmony and theory. And through 8 years of rigorous lessons and education under famed classical guitar teacher Jack Cecchini, Bob learned the true dedication and passion required for becoming a professional musician. In addition to his work with Jack, Bob played in the Masterclasses of Oscar Ghiglia (Segovia's podigy) and Manuel Lin
ce (disciple of Abel Carlevaro) and did advanced guitar study with Jack Grassel, a well known master guitarist. Bobalso diversified his education by studying at the Bloom School of Jazz and spending three years learning improvisation techniques from famed jazz guru Charlie Banacos.

Because of his education, Bob is perhaps best known for his incredible improvisation abilities and his unique arrangements of pop tunes. Inspired by Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Andres Segovia, and other iconic guitarists, Bob has blended what he loves best about traditional Bebop and Blues with his creative, harmonic approaches. His jazz trio especially capitalizes on their unique ability to improvise, providing a steady stream of tunes, all while playing great jazz music and standards from the Great American Song Book. A passionate and energetic performer, Bob has been playing for crowds since his high school rock band days. Today, he enjoys playing solo and with his jazz trio at both private and corporate events.

Bob enjoys passing along his knowledge and experience to others as the founder of G4 Guitar Riverside where he teaches all styles, all ages, and all levels. Known by his students as an encouraging and supportive teacher, Bob believes that any student can become a good guitarist with enough dedication and passion. He teaches the G4 Guitar method, which is based on 29 years of research and development and is a structured, proven method for learning the guitar.

In addition to teaching guitar lessons, Bob has also written one book on soloing concepts for guitar, a theory course for beginners, and has developed special technical exercises to help guitarists with technical development.

Today, Bob continues to teach guitar lessons and is working on a CD of solo guitar music consisting of jazz and pop tunes.

I am beginner - medium level, trying to get my feet wet in the jazz realm. Bob is truly a master in the field, and every lesson I learn something new. I think even for a professional player, Bob would still be a master and have something to teach. He is the real deal; a true professional! At the same time, he is a skilled professor, knowing right away what your level, needs and expectations are and tailoring the class to your level. He is clearly passionate about what he does, and every class is a lot of fun and something I really look forward to. He also masters blues, classical, pop, rock and any other style I could think of. I love everything about teaching! I love music; it is my life. I sleep, breathe and dream music. I am a Columbia University Chicago graduate; I graduated with a degree in Music with a concentration in Classical Voice. I have performed in numerous operas and musicals, as well as, sung on Gospel Cruises all around the world. In my eyes, the student is the main focus so whatever issues, concerns or request the student may have I will treat them with priority. I am all about strengthening the natural born talent and making my students the best vocalist they can be. I'm here to serve the students and that is what I will do until they are confident in their gift...music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I take music very seriously but at the same time I like my lessons to be fun and a joyous experience. I am very patient and helpful with any strugg
les that may seem too hard to the student. I will start my students off with the basic vocal warm ups and then move on to material that they would like to cover and if so the student doesn't have material to cover, I will present them with material. Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

I've been working with Keanon for almost a year now. Aside from being an amazing vocalist himself, he does everything he can to help students reach their full potential and find their voice. He makes lessons fun while constantly keeping you challenged. There's always encouragement from him to strive to be better, which can really bring the best out of singers. Whether you're simply singing for hobby, performing for shows/auditions, or ready to record, Keanon has something to offer to any aspiring musician. I am a current Music Education Major at the University of Illinois. Before that, I attended West Aurora High School as the first chair trumpet player in the concert and jazz setting for 2 years, and was a trumpet section leader and drum major of the marching band there.
I earned the John Phillip Sousa Band Award and the Semper Fidelis Marine Corps Musical Excellence Award for leadership, musical talent, and dedication in music. I was privately taught under Dr. Rod Schueller, a band director who formerly taught at Michigan State, Texas State, and Western Illinois University, and I currently study under Professors Ronald Romm and Charles Duval. I graduated in the top 1% of my class. As well, I attended and was an intern at the prestigious Smith Walbridge Drum Major Clinics, where I earned my 1st class rank nationally as a leader in teachin
g music.

I have been tutoring trumpet for 3 years, and have been playing for 10. I have taught between the ages of 10 and 17, and have experience on the beginning level up to classical and jazz music at the advanced level. Teaching is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had, and doing what I love for the rest of my life is a blessing in itself!

With my students, I work on creating a positive and comfortable playing environment so that the student feels safe making mistakes and asking questions. The only way to grow as a player is find the confidence to fail. As brass players, we need diligence, patience, and strong work ethic to improve, and a safe place to gain these skills is essential to every student. I want to get to know exactly how the student plays and what their goals are so I can work with them on achieving them and a little bit beyond them as well. Learning how to play an instrument or get better at it goes far beyond simple instruction- it comes from a connection to the music and a joyful willingness to mess up sometimes! That's how we grow.

I've taken lessens with Mercedes for two years. Every time I left a lessen I had a lot of good ideas and ways to strengthen my playing. I never felt like lessens with Mercedes were a teacher to student environment. It was very chill and more like friend helping friend. That to me is the best relationship to truly learn. Mercedes helped me learn a sense of confidence that is not only used in Trumpet but in life.
