Whether on the roof or at a ceilidh, tradition is what makes a fiddler. A term for the violin in many different folk styles, from American country and bluegrass to Celtic and Klezmer, the fiddle is a vital part of traditional music around the world. Fiddlers add emotion, life, and fun to their music, thrilling audiences and encouraging dancers to kick up their heels.

Our fiddle teachers come from a variety of traditions and styles, so you’re sure to find one that teaches to your interests and taste! Our individualized lessons mean that you can begin learning the tradition of your choice from day one.

Certified Fiddle Teachers

Personalized attention means that you will be working toward your goals at your pace—our one-on-one instructors encourage you to grow and learn as an individual, not a name on a roll sheet. You can even contact instructors before selecting your teacher to ensure a good fit!

Our experienced fiddle teachers’ certifications are listed right on their profiles, along with student reviews, teaching locations, and rates. The average cost of fiddle lessons is $37 for half an hour, $53 for forty-five minutes, or $67 for an hour. Because our tutors set their own rates, though, you are sure to find an instructor who matches your budget, learning style, and musical tradition.

You can choose whether to take online fiddle lessons, learn in your home, or work with your teacher in their studio. Once you decide on a fiddle teacher, all you have to do is choose your package, schedule, and learning location, and then sign up!

Online Fiddle Lessons for All Ages

Whether you are looking for fiddle lessons for kids or adults, we have options for you. It’s never too early or too late to make music! When studying music, children see increases in math and language skills, improved dexterity and cognition, and brain growth. Meanwhile, adults can improve their memory, posture, and hand-eye coordination. Everyone sees social benefits as they begin to perform!

Since our instruction is tailored to you, our fiddle teachers adapt to your maturity and skill level. By knowing you as a student and an individual, tutors can act as a guide to steer you toward your musical goals.

Fiddle Lessons for All Levels

The benefit of individualized instruction is that our fiddle teachers work with you where you are, whether you are a beginner picking up a fiddle for the first time or a professional switching musical styles. We offer fiddle lessons for beginners through experts and everything in between.

When learning the fiddle, it is good to start out with an idea of what kind of musician you want to become. While everyone develops their own musical voice over time, knowing what tradition you would like to learn will help you develop skills and tricks particular to that style. Basics, of course, are the same for most violin players, but starting early in your tradition will help you reach your goals.

FAQ

How long does it take to learn to play the fiddle?

Many students see great improvement over the first year, though of course, a musical instrument is a life’s work. Three to five years, with consistent practice and instruction, is a good estimate for most people to achieve a good level of proficiency.

Our one-on-one instructors can help you learn at an appropriate pace for you. Individual guidance and practice can all help you grow as a musician, and our fiddle teachers are an excellent source of expert advice and instruction.

How easy is it to learn to play the fiddle?

The fiddle/violin is reputed to be a difficult instrument to learn, as it is both fretless and bowed. Despite this, it is a fun instrument to play and worth the investment of time and effort. Our certified fiddle teachers will teach you and give you the feedback you need to become proficient.

Playing with others at your skill level (and better!) is a great way to learn, as is consistently practicing, working with a good teacher, and listening to skilled players. Our tutors are an important part of your learning process and can help you develop skills at your pace.

What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?

A violin and fiddle are the same instruments. The main difference is the style of music played on the instrument—classical musicians call their instrument a violin, while many folk and traditional musicians refer to the same instrument as a fiddle.

However, fiddlers often do use a flatter bridge to allow easier bowing for multiple strings. Many fiddles are strung with steel strings rather than the classical synthetic ones. These minor differences affect the playability, style, and sound, but the instrument itself remains the same.
