I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.
Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.

About Paul
I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am a
lso a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist.
I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance.
I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.
Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.
If you just want to learn music theory or how to write a song, I can teach you all that and more.
I will teach you how to read music but if you don't wan't to do that, I will teach you how to read tablature.
I'll push you to learn your instrument and to practice but I won't force to practice anything that you are not interested in.
After about 3-6 months of lessons with me you will be able to play songs that you wanted to learn and you will also know all the essential fun basics of your instrument.
Learning the guitar or bass is fun! And as your teacher I will make you want to practice.

I've tried to take guitar lessons a few times over the last few years and it's been difficult to find a good Instructor. In my experience the instructors I have found have either been flaky (canceling lessons, changing times last minute, hard to reach, etc...) or their teaching style is difficult to follow (unorganized or confusing). Paul is both very reliable and very organized. He's lessons are easy to follow and I feel like I am moving forward in a way that has purpose. I have not been working with him long but I already see big improvements because what he has me working on makes sense. Paul is also really personable and fun to work with. He is very patient and is the perfect combination of being focused but laid back at the same time. I am really enjoying my lessons with him.

There is a lot more to performance that just being on stage. What do you wear? Where do you stand? Should you bow? Should you acknowledge other musicians? I can help you find the answers to these questions.

About Sarah
First of all, thank you for taking a look at my profile! I know you probably have a lot of teachers to choose from on this fabulous website. Here are a few reasons why you should study with me!

1) My experience as a teacher: I have been teaching both privately and at music schools for over 6 years. I have experience teaching private voice lessons and conducting choirs.

2) My experience as a performer: I currently sing and perform in the Chicago area. I know how to prepare you for auditions and performances because I myself am performing and auditioning.

3) My students: Several of my students can be seen singing in choirs or performing leading roles theaters in the Chicago area and are represented by talent agencies such as Gray Talent Group. Also, just this past year, I helped one of my students gain acceptance to ChiArts, a p
erforming arts school that only accepts 10% of its applicants.

4) I make it fun! Here is a quote from one of my reviews:
“Exactly what anyone would need to gain knowledge about the mechanics of singing and she makes it fun, too”

It is my goal to help every one of my students:

1) develop a healthy singing technique that will bring longevity to your career or hobby.

2) learn music efficiently and independently.

3) develop good practice habits.

4) learn basic ear training/sight singing.

If that sounds like something you would like to learn, click the green button on my profile to book lessons with me. If you are not quite ready to book, feel free to ask me a question.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
I've been studying voice for 10 years and teaching consistently for over 6 years. I received my M.M. from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and my B.M. from Wheaton College. Since graduating in 2013, I have been working and performing in the Chicagoland area. Some performance highlights include but are not limited to performing with Light Opera Works, CCPA's production of the Chicago Premier of Daron Hagen's Amelia, and performing with the Grant Park Chorus.

I look forward to working with you!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide books. I expect my student to provide a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in operatic singing. I received my training in opera; however, I also have training and performance experience in musical theater. I believe I am well equipped in several genres.

Lessons include exercises for both the lower and upper registers, balancing the voice, and proper breathing and singing technique. Repertoire can be anything from folk music to opera, depending on the needs of the singer. Teaching music performance and singing are what I do best!

About Penny
ABOUT PENNY R.

I graduated from college in Virginia with a Bachelor of Music Education degree as a voice major, and minored in piano and violin. My teaching certificate was for vocal, instrumental and general music, grades K - 12, and I graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Graduate school brought me to Indiana, where I earned a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance. Migrating up to the Chicago area from there, I taught at a private music school (voice and small ensembles, as well as many faculty performances) before staying at home to raise our children, and teaching voice lessons privately in my Studio. After 30 years of teaching, I'm still at it, and I still love it!

I am a Permanent Professional member of Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA), a National Certified Teacher of Music with the Illinois State Music Teacher's Associ
ation (ISMTA), a member of the West Suburban Chapter of ISMTA, as well as a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing. Most of my students are high school aged, but I have taught from ages seven through 70. My students regularly achieve MTNA's Music Achievement Award, are selected for District Choir and All-State Choir, as well as receive leading roles in high school and community musicals.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that singing does something to words which nothing else can--it puts feelings to music. Everyone has feelings, and everyone can be musical. Those who pursue their vocal education can be rewarded with confidence in their ability to sing. The goal of my Studio is to promote the study of music, and to create a musical environment at each lesson so that every person's individual potential can become realized - all while having fun!

My Studio provides a nurturing environment for all singers, from beginning to advanced, children to adults. I will help you develop and maintain your vocal health, expand your vocal range, and develop your musicianship. You will learn to integrate a coordinated process of breath, pitch and tone, while exploring your vocal potential in a wide range of contemporary and classic musical styles. Teaching proper vocal technique is my primary goal with every student: fixing what is being used incorrectly, and enhancing what is already done well. I will work with you on any style of repertoire you desire: classical, opera, Broadway, jazz, folk, etc. I love it when a student wants a variety of song! And if your music theory skills are weak, we'll take care of that, too!

LESSONS

Children eighth grade and younger should sign up for half hour lessons; students high school and older should sign up for 45 minute lessons.

I am so excited to share the joy of making music with my new TakeLessons students! We get right into breathing, first thing. Once that is right, we can turn our attention to what's going on with the throat and mouth. All the while, we are learning songs by which we can practice whatever we're working on in the exercises. Everybody's different, with different tensions, both proper and antagonistic. We isolate the muscular tensions that are interfering with your perfect sound, and go from there!

*** Lesson Details ***
Come prepared to make a lot of noises with which you don't normally sing! We will explore every sound you are capable of - there's something to learn from most of them! Obviously, we'll concentrate on the ones we really want to sing with, while using a myriad of vocal exercises.

My studio brochure will explain many of the nuts and bolts of our lessons, and any expectations regarding practicing, keyboard ability and access, and how we work home practice when you don't know how to play piano. Generally, we spend about half the lesson time on warm ups/exercises, and half the time on songs. Sometimes we memorize them; sometimes we polish them; sometimes we just learn them quickly and move on to new things. Each lesson is a little different, depending on what I'm hearing from you that day.

I'm always happy to help you with school/church solos, audition material, choral parts, etc. Otherwise, we will choose repertoire together, taking into account your goals and interests, along with what makes good teaching material. Come join the fun and make some music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My basement rec room serves as my teaching studio, so there are stairs with which to contend. Parents may stay either in the studio, or up in my living room to wait. The fully equipped studio contains a piano, audio-visual equipment for recording and play back, music stands, stools, a comfortable couch, and even a sink for quick water drinks! (Singing can make you thirsty!)

*** Specialties ***
In my 30+ years of teaching private lessons, I've amassed quite a toolbox of eclectic musical resources. That said, I still find muscle manipulative exercises while vocalizing to be the quickest route for most students to have success in building their long term voice. So I utilize those techniques frequently. With proper, healthy vocal production, a student can sing in any genre they choose. I am very concerned about producing a healthy voice with a free tone, particularly for children, so that all students can go forward into whatever style they choose with good vocal production.

I teach my students to be confident in their performance skills. They learn performance etiquette and mental strategies to help them focus and play their best!

About Isabelle
I am a violinist from Rogers Park, Chicago's North Side. I started violin when I was 3, and have been playing ever since! I studied with Stacia Spencer at Northwestern University's String Academy, then went on to violin performance at Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

I started teaching violin 8 years ago and have greatly enjoyed working with my students! Since then I have completed several Suzuki method teacher certifications and taken a string pedagogy course at Oberlin.

I also have studied and play baroque violin in various groups in Chicago including Baroque Band and the Bach and Beethoven Ensemble. I also sing and play viola da gamba.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach private lessons to students of all ages and levels. Music and learning should be fun! I help students express themselves and reach their goals. For beginning and in
termediate violinists I usually teach the Suzuki violin method literature with a mix of traditional materials, but I am happy to teach whatever music the student wants to play! Students may also like to explore fiddle music, jazz, rock, modern, folk, romantic, or renaissance music!

Depending on the student, in lessons I tend to have my students warm up with some technique work, and then focus on a piece for the later part of the lesson. In my teaching I prioritize playing in a healthy and relaxed manner. My studies of body awareness have included Alexander technique, yoga, Feldenkrais, meditation, and T'ai chi ch'uan. A happy and healthy body makes for a happy violinist!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music studio room w/ violin, stands, piano, and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide music, a music stand, a tuner and my own teaching instrument. I expect the student to bring their own instrument, accessories (rosin, shoulder rest) and music they have been working on.

*** Specialties ***
I play traditional violin, and I also specialize in baroque violin. I play viola da gamba as well.

Naturally gifted with the voice of an angel, but just not sure what to do with your hands when you're on stage? We'll work intensively on music interpretation and how to perform for both big halls, and small parlors, so that you can captivate audiences with your voice AND your presence!

About Nicole
Nicole is available to teach lessons for students of all levels. Beginning her singing career when she was 7, she most recently sang at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, was a winner of the international CS Competition in musical theatre, and is a Chicago F.A.M.E. finalist for Jazz and popular music. Combined with her training and professional experience, Nicole teaches singers to switch gracefully between multiple styles. Your performance is just that...YOUR performance. Without question, the best way to ramp up your performance level is to make it your own. But how? That's something we'll work on at length. Are there gimmicks and showy things one can do to add to it? Certainly. But you can overdo it and ruin your show. We'll discuss that, too.
This is a great subject to combine with other subject areas. This is something I'm always happy to do. For some students, this can justify a 90 minute lesson. I have adult students who spend as much as two hours at a time with me.

About Phil
I've taught both privately and in the classroom (in schools from Pre-K to college, and through workshops), and have been a working musician and teacher for more than 25 years. I have a degree in music from Columbia College Chicago (Summa Cum Laude). My students have included everyone from absolute beginners to working professionals like myself. Many of my students have gone on to careers in music as performers, songwriters and/or teachers.

My approach in private instruction involves tailoring the lessons to the specific needs of each student, while making sure that he/she has the knowledge and technique to succeed in their creative endeavors. Whether it's a hobby or a potential career, I leave nothing out. You will learn the entire instrument. In cases where a student works in more than one subject, one session can typically be applied
to all/both of them. I strive to help every student find their own creative voice, while building the skill sets required to work in any style of music.

I also offer group lessons for 3 or more students. For friends at similar skill levels, this can offer a fun and more affordable way to learn a subject. It also serves as an additional motivator as the students in the group feed off of each other for ideas and inspiration.

Please feel free to contact me with the "Ask Phil a Question" button on my profile here. This can include questions about my method, or regarding days and times for lessons. What you see in my availability here is based on my schedule away from TakeLessons. I have students elsewhere and perform shows regularly. I may have additional times available and tend to have some flexibility. I teach worldwide online. Just ask.

As soon as you're ready to book lessons, you can use the Green Button after selecting your area of study, day and time. I will receive a notification that you've signed up. I will then confirm with you and send a questionnaire regarding your lesson needs within 48 hours.

Thanks for your interest.

I look forward to working with you!
