I can help beginning students on percussion learn the basics.
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.
Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

Fabulous! What a great teacher! And SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about all kinds of music! THANKS! looking forward to all my lessons!
I have been playing drum kit and percussion for over ten years and teaching for about seven. I've played a little bit of everything - pop, rock, punk, hip-hop, ska/reggae, blues, jazz, and even musical theater. In addition to drum kit, I can play and teach hand drums (djembe and conga) in contemporary or traditional African, Latin, American styles. I'm happy to share my skills and expertise with drummers of all ages and skill levels.
I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.
I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.
*** Lesson Details *** I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!
o Equipment *** I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.
*** Specialties *** Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm. Drums & Percussion: All genres Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)
I am fluent in Xylophone, Marimba, Hand Percussion (Congas, Djembe), Timpani, Classical Percussion, Drum Corps, etc., which is why I am also specifying here "Percussion".
Students will be taught an in-depth comprehensive curriculum covering topics such as hand technique, using many rudiments and many sticking exercises to develop their technique. We will focus on reading skills and rhythmic interpretation (listening), counting out rhythms so that the student can also educate themselves when listening to music or otherwise, and can go beyond specific lessons assignments to educate themselves further, outside of our class. We will also cover Drum Set coordination and many styles of music associated with it. For Mallet instruments, it is likely we will cover music theory along with of course musical scales, arpeggios, etc.
Carl grew up in Connecticut in a musical family. He found a great deal of enjoyment starting Drum Lessons in grade school where he noticed that this joy for music and rhythm contributed to a passion-inspired growth accelerating beyond his performance in other subjects. He was inspired by Classic and Progressive Rock artists throughout Junior High and High School, and began to take his growing passion more seriously, taking part in Marching, Symphonic bands, Wind and Jazz Ensembles. Carl made the All-State Orchestra in High School, and performed at an All-New England Orchestra while attending CCSU (Central Connecticut State University) and while studying Classical Percussion (Snare Drum, Marimba, Timpani) under the tutelage of Principal Percussionist at the Navy Coast Guard. After two years at CCSU, he transferred to Berklee College
of Music where he obtained his BA in Music Performance. While attending Berklee Carl explored Contemporary Drum Set styles within various ensembles and classes, focusing on Jazz, Latin, Funk, Fusion, and World Music, under the apprenticeship of artists such as Kenwood Dennard, Ian Froman, Jon Hazilla, Nancy Zeltsman, Casey Scheuerell. Carl currently teaches at Needham Public Schools as well as the Winchester Community Music School, and performs in and around Boston and New England in various stylistic musical groups ranging from small Combo Jazz, Big Band, Folk, Funk, Indie Rock, Theatre, etc. Some latest projects include ‘Echo and Drake’ who were featured in ‘Paste’ and ‘American Songwriter’ Magazines, ‘Zen Carnival’, Mamadou(.com) to name a few.
Carl’s role as a teacher is to create as much of a positive blend of education with an exciting musical environment, incorporating the latest contemporary music (student and teacher influenced) while also applying a broad scope of traditional styles, techniques, and exercises for developing a well-rounded musical experience and musician, and with the goal of assisting the student in reaching their highest potential and to become as self-reliant as possible.
*** Travel Equipment *** Depending on which town, I could travel up to 20-25 miles because in some cases those locations maybe near other places i currently teach...

Hi! My name is Tyler, and I'm a great resource for drum set, guitar, piano, bass, and music theory lessons in Portland, OR. Conveniently located in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood, my studio is equipped with all the instruments and lesson material needed to provide engaging, challenging, and fun lessons for students of all backgrounds. I have experience teaching students ranging from age 4 to 70, in settings varied as private instruction, group classes, ensemble coaching, and high school/college masterclasses.
Taking lessons is one of the best and fastest ways to enhance your musical abilities. Learning a musical instrument is also proven be similar to a full body work out for the brain. Oh yea, it's also going to be AWESOME!
Patient, focused, encouraging and time efficient. He was good at keeping our youngster on task and making the experience fun. Wish he was able to take our child further with piano. I don't know how much was Tyler and how much was our child, but our kiddo learned quickly from Tyler. Thank you Tyler!

Tyler taught me how to play the drums! He was so engaging and informative, and his teaching style allowed me to learn quickly. I had so much fun and have developed a passion for the drums. I recommend highly taking lessons from him.
I can work with you on mallet technique (marimba, xylophone, bells, vibraphone, etc.) and help you learn from classical/orchestral, pop, and jazz literature. I can also assist you with learning orchestral snare drum technique. We can work on learning orchestral repertoire as well. A few of the books I use are the Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone (Goldenberg), Modern Method for Tympani (Goodman), and Stick Control (Stone). Please see my bio (the "About" section) for my orchestral experience.
Hi, thanks for visiting my profile! I love teaching. I hope you find this information useful. I have over 30 years of combined education and experience performing and teaching percussion and piano. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Alabama, with Piano as my secondary instrument. I hold a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance from Indiana University, with a Cognate in Jazz Studies. I have taught private percussion, drum set, and piano lessons for over 30 years. I performed for 10 years as a contract percussionist with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Macon Symphony Orchestra, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. I have performed in orchestras with accomplished musicians including The Moody Blues (Chastain Park), Judy Collins, and Henry Mancini.
son Details *** I like my students to have some fun while they learn. I ask that you practice 30 minutes a day, so that you can spend your lesson time learning and moving forward. For piano, I use the Alfred series, as well as the Real Book (jazz standards), and of course sheet music for classical pieces and popular tunes. After three months, you will have learned how to play the basic scales and chords, as well as some introductory classical and popular material. On drums after six months, you will know the first thirteen rudiments and some of the basic rock beats, and you will be playing with some rock ballads. After six months on piano, you will be playing all of the major scales and chords and the basic minor chords. You will be playing some Bach and Mozart, and you will start on some basic jazz standards. On drums, you will have learned most of the 26 basic rudiments, and you will be playing along with some medium tempo rock songs. You will have learned some coordinated independence to start playing jazz and swing styles (which by the way are the building blocks for playing R&B and hip-hop). And you'll enjoy the journey! I enjoy seeing my students grow as they learn. I have had students of mine go on to play in the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, get advanced music degrees, and become recording artists. The former Percussion Instructor at the University of Alabama was my percussion student. While I know that not everyone seeks to play professionally, you will learn the tools to play well. I look forward to teaching you!
Note: I will ask for an adult to be present during the lesson for any minor child (less than 18 years of age).
*** Studio Equipment *** Front and side entrance upright piano in living room plus drum set, electronic keyboard, seating for parents.
*** Specialties *** Drums --- Rock, Jazz Percussion --- Rudimental, Symphonic Piano --- Jazz, Jazz Theory, Popular
Stephen has been a great piano teacher. Both my boys take lessons from him and they enjoy it bery much. He is very clear about what they need to learn. His lessons are well planned and he’s flexible with the learning styles of each student. Sometime we even called him and asked questions after the lessons and he’s very generous and nice to have spent the time to explain things to the boys over the phone.

I've been studying piano with Steve for about a year. I could not be happier with my progress. Steve not only tunes right in to my needs but makes the discipline fun. He is a talented musician, and it's obvious he enjoys teaching music. I feel very fortunate to have him as my teacher.

I had my first lesson with Stephen today and he is an awesome teacher. I've been teaching myself for the last couple of years and was very nervous about playing in front of anyone. He made me feel very comfortable and picked up my needs quickly. He's very flexible and patient. I have full confidence that he will take me to the next level of reading, performing and theory. I'm exited to have found Stephen and look forward to my next lesson.
Outside of teaching percussion and musical performances I have worked in special education for over 15 years.
My life of music started knee high at the age of 4 playing drums and piano. At the age of 15 I gave my first musical performance, from that stage on I knew my talent had found a home.
In the 11th grade I toured with a local funk group in Washington DC through 26 cities learning music and the life of travel at an early age. During my last high school and college years I performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and with local rap artist.
Recording credits and highlights include work with Def Jam artist Steady Eddy, recording go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock, and recordings with Little Benny and the Masters.
My other musical passion is teaching. Throughout my col
lege years and beyond I served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. As part of the Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine I served as a instructional leader in music and performance mentor for the team. I taught part time as a percussion instructor at Milford Mill High School giving individual lessons for over 10 years.
Musical inspiration is an important element to the refinement of my craft. A few personal musical influences are Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Neil Peart (Rush), Dennis Chambers, (Santana), George Gray (Roberta Flack), Ricky Wellman (Miles Davis), Quinton Mack-Davis (Rare Essence) and Michael Bland (Prince).
*** Lesson Details *** Within the first three months of lessons student will gain a strong foundation of sight reading and basic drum techniques in both rudiment studies and playing the drum set. Our son has never played in a marching band before but is interested in playing in the marching band when he attends college in July so we were specifically looking for an instructor who had marching band experience to teach our son since he's never participated in the marching band in high school. We saw Mr. Stewart's profile and decided to have him work with our son. That was the BEST decision that we could have ever made. We have been nothing but impressed with Mr. Stewart. He definitely has the gift of teaching and he is very patient, knowledgeable, and he challenges our son to get better by giving him homework after each session. Our son absolutely LOVES Mr. Stewart and he is always excited for each lesson and to practice what Mr. Stewart has taught him. Our son went from not playing in the marching band at all in high school to making his college band and receiving a scholarship all thanks to Mr. Stewart. We are very grateful for his outstanding teaching and we would definitely recommend Mr. Stewart 100%.
Focusing on basic techniques, music theory, rhythm, and creativity.

Erasmo has been my instructor and has taught me mallet percussion for the past year, and over that year I have improved unbelievably.
He is an amazing instructor, very patient and helps explain so the student can fully understand. I have gotten very far within such little time thanks to him. I have become such a better musician from the time I started learning from Erasmo, and I have gotten many great opportunities to become an even better musician thanks to the instruction I have learned. I would highly recommend him for anyone of any age."
Henri is great!! He is a super experienced and knowledgable drummer (musician) and teacher. He is extremely patient, has taught me my basi
cs, technique, and is very open to teaching what you want to learn, willing to teach you what you are really interested in musically. At the end of every lesson, he reviews what we learned, writes it and lets me video it so I can practice at home. He has been really flexible, patient, laid back and always down to work on whatever you want but great at coming up with lessons that challenge and excite you as well. I could'nt be more pleased with Henri as a teacher. I always look forward to my lessons."
"Kevin Rank is an outstanding teacher.! My son is just beginning his 5th year of lessons with Kevin Rank. In the last 5 years, my son has grown from a shy
, unsure, extremely quite young man into a confident, 3 time all region percussion player. My boy has grown not only in his musical ability, but in his overall development. I am a strong believer that music is quintessential for all individuals. I am happy to have Kevin Rank helping my son to achieve his full potential as a percussionist and as a leader. He has made impressive advancements in his marimba playing, and Mr. Rank is instrumental in helping him achieve these goals."
"Ed, I would like to thank you, and commend you for the dedication and superior training you provided to my son, Sterling. Sterling joined your studio you
ng and lacking confidence in his drumming. You had great enthusiasm to keep him inspired and motivated yet, held him accountable to reach your expectations. He gained incredible strides working with you in all aspects of percussion!!! Also, you were a strong, respected leader resident teaching the students at The Denver School of the Arts. I would highly refer you to anyone seeking a quality, talented and over all good person who truly cares about his students to join your drumming studio."
"Fantastic lesson!! Olises really broke down the strokes and took the time to make sure I understood the lesson's objectives. The lesson was at the perfe
ct speed. Looking forward to next week's lesson."
"Ben was very accommodating to my son's busy marching band schedule. My son had never taken lessons before, and he was nervous as to what to expect. By t
he second lesson, that was all just a thing in the past! Ben worked with my teenager to relax and really enjoy what he was playing. Even the teachers at school have noticed the improvement in my son's abilities after only a few lessons with Ben! If you need a lesson teacher, BOOK BEN!"
"John is our perfect instructor: approachable, positive, encouraging, upbeat, makes my shy child comfortable and motivated. We love him!"
"Online Conga Drum Instruction

Johnny is an awesome teacher. Instructive. Quick to find what you need to foc
us on. Patient. Insightful. Funny. Just what you need if your time is precious, but you can get in front of webcam for a few hours a week. He's helped me get those tones right and given me the confidence to grow. Really, really importantly he's always there for questions and support outside of the lessons."
"Absolutely fantastic teacher! I've had some lessons with Tareq. He is a great person and musician, he listens carefully and explains everything thoroughly
. He gave me great exercises that helped me improve my playing and sense of time and rhythm. It is a great experience to have lessons with him, and I think his attitude is what makes the difference. I highly recommend taking lessons with Tareq"
