There are so many reasons to learn to draw. Perhaps you are applying for college and want to strengthen your portfolio? Maybe you changing careers and need to strengthen your visual thinking? Or you may just want to learn to draw for fun. Whatever your reason is, I can help. I have been teaching drawing for 20 years and I’ve worked with students of all ages, from young adults to retirees. There seems to be a notion out there that “one must have a talent for art before they can learn to draw. ” One thing I can say for sure is that this absolutely NOT true. With the right knowledge, a strong desire to learn, and a willingness to try, anyone can learn to draw.

I teach students how to draw from a classical studies background, but I believe in nurturing the uniqueness of each student and honoring their learning style. Unlike a classroom setting, a private lesson frees us up to build the lessons specifically around the student's goals and needs.

About Sharon

Do you want to learn to draw/paint or improve your work? Are you applying for college and need portfolio advice? Did you want to get back into doing art after many years without it? Are you a mid-career artist and just need some feedback and a new perspective? Are you changing careers and nee

I had a great time and learned a lot painting with Sharon. This was my first painting lesson. She is patient, helpful and very passionate about watercolors. She is also very knowledgeable and answered all my questions.
Sharon will tailor your lesson to your goals. You do not need to be an artist to enjoy these lessons.

Sharon was my introduction to watercolor painting! Her suggestions were very helpful. Her depth of knowledge and experience were stimulating and lead me to read and research artists and concepts. She was patient with this novice, and I look forward to more lessons.

WATERCOLOR PAINTING LESSONS

Abstract Painting uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Abstract art, non figurative art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art are loosely related terms. They are similar, but perhaps not of identical meaning.

A Complete List of Painting Supplies that every Beginning Watercolor Painter needs

1. Favorite brands Daniel Smith Water-Soluble Oil Paints & Mediums, and Holbein Duo Aqua Water Soluble Oil

2. Proper Painting Brushes
I‘d suggest six total in a range of sizes: two size 2 brushes, two size 6 brushes, and two size 12 brushes. One of each pair should be a flat brush (with a squared-off brush tip) and the other should be a filbert brush (with a slightly rounded tip).

3. Newspaper
4. A charcoal pencil
5. A “palette”
6. Comfortable, messy clothes
7. A painter’s easel
8. Canvas (or other painting surface)
9. Water ...

I love Mayra. She taught me a lot more than I thought in just one class. I have a painting that I will hang on my wall. Never thought one class would do that. She has great personality and great skills.
Elena & Erik S.
Mayra was very helpful. She had a challenge with us because we we're weren't sure exactly what we wanted to learn. Mayra worked with us and demonstrated some new techniques and ideas based on where we already were as (very amateur) artists. She was helpful, very encouraging, and easy to work with. Thank you!

It was a great experience meeting Mayra! She's an excellent teacher, and is a very patient, nice person. I learned some interesting techniques from her, and enjoyed my lesson with Mayra very much!!!

"Megan is fantastic! I have an art and design background but never studied painting itself. I came to her with two example artists whose styles I love and wanted to work towards. We did weekly classes for a few months - she was able to take me through the basics quickly, progressing more and more into advanced techniques needed to emulate specific effects as we deciphered these artists' works and their processes. She's an active listener, is always prepared, and adapts immediately to your needs as an artist and where you want to go. I'm taking time now to churn out some works and will absolutely be back for further lessons and critiques. "
