I encourage my students to pursue all types of music. I like to use “method books” to help with reading and music theory no matter which instrument they choose. I always use supplemental materials that follow the student’s interests and level. I often use technology in lessons to motivate and help students grow. For example, I use many apps for theory, note reading, and rhythm training.

A cancellation 24hrs in advance is always appreciated.

Matt taught me for a 3 month period and helped me drastically with learning how to improvise guitar solos. I can't thank Matt enough for his help in helping me with a rather unorthodox time to start getting lessons. Each week he told me to bring 3 songs with a guitar solo I would like to learn in different genres and each week we broke down the solos for me to practice and gather their techniques. Thank you so much Matt!

I give beginner piano students a great head start in their musical education, with a solid foundation covering piano technique and an introduction to music theory which would serve them well whether they continue to pursue piano, or pick up another instrument along the way.

About Caleb
Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and types of events.

Caleb performs in Chicago with soul-pop band The Right Now as well as his original funk band Nasty Snacks. He has played in horn sections for Latin, funk, and big-band jazz bands, as well as Afrobeat, indie rock, R&B/soul, and hip-hop/rap groups.

He has also played the national anthem for the president at opening night of the Chicago Bulls season, been featured at Chicago Blackhawks games, principal trumpet in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras and in the DePaul Screamin’ Demons Pep Band at Madison Square Garden. Caleb al
so regularly lends his solo talents to wedding parties and church services, and is one-fourth of the Chicago for-hire horn section Revolution Horns. Other musical endeavors include a performance on the Steve Harvey Show, playing trumpet for the Broadway musical I Love Lucy in downtown Chicago, and a coveted chance to perform in master classes for his idols Adolph “Bud” Herseth and Chris Martin.

Caleb has been teaching privately in the Chicago area for 8 years now and is eager to teach students with any amount of experience, especially those who are eager to approach music from a variety of perspectives.

---

I believe that the best way to teach a brass instrument at any level, is simply to check in and make sure that the student has a great understanding of what a beautiful sound is on their instrument. This is done in a patient and positive environment, filled with the best possible music making to serve as a model to aspire to. With small, attainable goals and encouragement to practice at least a small amount on a daily basis, you cannot help of improve, and hopefully have a good time playing whatever music interests you while doing so. The journey is a bit different for everyone, but anyone can make a beautiful sound, and go from there!

---

I like to strike a balance of teaching out of various method books(depending on the student and their level of ability, some are more suitable than others of course and I help guide the way), and learning to play by ear, which can be almost anything the student wants to learn, provided it's not overly complicated for them. Technique has it's place, but is certainly not the whole story. Learning music that is fun, while at the same time learning to get better at your instrument, makes the overall process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you have the right tools, music is something that can be fulfilling for the rest of your life, especially when you learn to do it in a fun and healthy way.

I do believe that classical piano instruction is the best way for anyone to learn how to play an instrument. Individual instruction encourages the growth of excellent music skills, and provides a foundation for music literacy. I will develop individualized programs for piano study, offering instruction that best suits the student. Private lessons can offer flexibility to learn the type of music students are personally the most interested in.

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Kelvin is a phenomenal teacher of classical guitar. Our teenage son wanted to take classical lessons for a while, after having happily done a couple years with School of Rock. He and Kelvin meshed well, and I feel our son learned a lot over the course of a couple more years.

When one of us had a schedule conflict, we had the ability to do a lesson via Skype. Let me tell you, that came in mighty handy in the winter of 2019.

Schedule with Kelvin; I am certain you'll be glad that you did.

Piano Lessons are provided for all of the United States online or in person in Fayetteville North Carolina.

The Piano is one of the most widely used instruments in history and today. Most musicians, despite their instrument of study, have at least a general level of proficiency and understanding of playing the piano. Unlike some instruments, the piano lays out a very visual and tangible construction of how music works. For this reason, many children start out music lessons on the piano and eventually move onto other instruments of choice.
Piano Lessons Designed For You

Mr. McClain provides patient and relaxed Music Lessons while instilling a perfect balance of challenge that drives the learning process keeping it all passionately fun and exciting. As an educated composer with twenty-seven years of performance and practice experience, Kevin is a goldmine of knowledge for those who seek to know the "What", "Why", and "How" of music. Kevin is also accustomed to strictly focusing ...

About Kevin
Taking a profound interest in the guitar at the age of 6, I developed a keen sense of improvisational skills in my earlier years, eventually playing in multiple styles of amateur bands that included Rock, Jazz, Funk, Bluegrass, and improvisational Jam-bands.

After high school I gained great experience "gigging" professionally in various experimental bluegrass, rock, and Jam-bands but soon sought more stable work as a musician and composer.

I returned to school to obtain a degree in music performance and composition. After rapidly advancing on the piano and furthering my studies in classical and jazz music in college, my interests gravitated toward advanced studies in music theory and composition.

Since then I have performed professionally for private and public recitals, festivals, musical contests, conventions, restaurants, w
eddings, etcetera.

I have been formally teaching beginning to advanced studies on the guitar and piano to all ages, while continuing to perform professionally.

I invite all to explore my profile and listen to my guitar and piano music.

Why Choose Kevin as your Music Teacher?

As a young, developing musician, I was always frustrated with many of my teachers whom taught on a "need to know" basis. This left me with many unanswered questions about music and practice that would have to be answered over much time spent practicing and studying.

Understandably, this was due to the many abstract musical concepts and performing techniques, each of which have many levels of complexity. This made comprehension and execution of these concepts and techniques a step by step process that would take much time and practice spent on each step. It was a, seemingly necessary, general to specific method of teaching that was intended to prevent students from becoming overwhelmed and discouraged.

Nonetheless, I had always felt that I could have saved myself much unnecessary time and struggle that could better be utilized by being devoted to more efficient and aggressive progress within my practice, if presented with the "big picture" so to speak. As I progressed further through a lifetime of music studies, I increasingly confirmed this to be true. I began to question exactly who were teachers trying to make the music lesson easier on, the student or themselves. After all, isn't it the teacher's job, first and foremost among many other duties, to promote and inspire understanding as completely as possible, despite the difficulty in presentation and explanation? Of course, teaching methods often should be, and are adapted to fit each individual student, but I quickly noticed a dramatic difference in my own, as well as my student's, ability, understanding, and overall progress when applying an analytically and full explanation of both theory and technique within my music lessons.

General Overview:

In general, the lessons I offer focus on various styles of interest, learning to play favorite songs and exercises with related scales and chords, timing and rhythm, playing by ear, physical technique, reading tabs or staff music, and basic to advanced compositional techniques and song writing skills.

It is always best to start in a lesson book of appropriate age and skill level, but the lessons can also take on a more informal approach if desired.

Lesson Plan

All lessons despite levels of ability consist of a basic lesson plan of warm-up's with technique building exercises, theoretical concepts, ear training and dictation, performance, and outline of practice plans and goals for the following lesson. Each lesson is followed up by lesson notes that contain updated progress reports, review of lesson, tips and goals for practice to assist in the student's practice throughout the week and keep students on track.

Lesson Material Covered

Musical Alphabet, Tonal Orientation, Tuning, Right and Left Hand Positions and exercises, Picking and Strumming exercises, Playing Notes on the Neck, Rhythm, Time Signatures, Counting, Basic Musical Intervals (Whole Steps & Half Steps), The Chromatic Musical Alphabet and Scale, The Major Scale, Scale Degrees, Intervals of the Major Scale, Interval Qualities, Keys, Key Signatures, The Circle of Fifths, Chords, Triads, Chord Inversions, Relativity and Determining Chord Quality, Easy Chord Building, Major Scale Triads, Major Scale Modes, Common Chord Progressions, 7th Chords, 9th Chords, 11th Chords, 13th Chords, Bar Chords, Accompaniment, Solos, Phrasing, Chops, Improvisation, Creative Song Writing and More.

Beginning to Advanced Lessons

For beginning musicians, the first lessons focuses on orientation of the instrument, tuning, basic theory, playing technique, and becoming familiar with basic chords related to song chosen by the student or outlined in book. Depending on difficulty of song chosen, duration of lesson, and amount of time students have for practice, most songs can be accomplished within 2 -3 lessons.

Intermediate Lessons , and Advanced Lessons begin with a quick evaluation of knowledge, technique, ability, and any current material or songs the student has been working on to determine a strong jumping off point.

Moving At Your Own Pace

Kevin provides patient and relaxed music lessons while instilling a perfect balance of challenge that drives the learning process keeping it all passionately fun and exciting. As an educated composer with twenty-seven years of performance and practice experience, Kevin is a goldmine of knowledge for those who seek to know the "What", "Why", and "How" of music. Kevin is also accustomed to strictly focusing on performing for those who want to get playing songs as soon as possible. He has had 10 years of experience teaching both children and adults.

I've concertized in tux and white tails in front of symphony orchestras and played recitals that required two intermissions, all by myself.

About Jon
Jon N. was born and raised in Mexico City and is proudly an American citizen. He has been performing since the age of three, on several instruments, studying music since fourteen, and still takes lessons to this day. What's not to love?

He is proud to teach at all levels, including many professional musicians with master’s degrees, adult beginners, and of course, kids of all ages between 8 and 75.

They are encouraged to select the music they want to learn, so we have worked on classical music and original compositions, which I also coach, jazz, blues, pop, rock, the Great American Songbook, reggae, seven different kinds of Jewish music, and other ethnic music from all over the globe.

Frequently the younger students will request a tune I've never heard, but I magically transform the MP3 into a handwritten score at the student's l
evel. Example, one of my adult beginners wanted to play the big symphonic poem Scheherazade, and I wrote out the main tunes for easy piano.

I teach piano to beginner students, giving them a solid musical foundation on which they can build upon. I teach proper keyboard technique while introducing students to music theory concepts that would be very advantageous to anyone pursuing music beyond a beginner level.

About Brendan
Brendan has been living in Chicago since 2014, and graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor's degree in Classical Trumpet Performance in 2017. During his time at DePaul, Brendan played in nearly every major ensemble at one point or another, including the renowned DePaul Symphony Orchestra and DePaul Jazz Ensemble.

Since graduating from DePaul, Brendan is now one of a handful of working trumpet players in the Chicago area. He performs regularly with Four Star Brass Band, a New Orleans-style brass band with a Chicago twist, and funk group Get Up With The Get Downs. Recently, he has played with these bands at House of Blues, Martyrs', Reggies', and The Green Mill. He has also played in other brass bands like Hi Hat Second Line and Patriot Brass, and has played gigs with professional big bands Big Band Boom and Heisenberg Uncerta
inty Players. He is also the resident trumpeter at St. Luke Evangelical Church in Lakeview.

Brendan has performed the national anthem at multiple DePaul sporting events, and was featured as a soloist in many ensembles within the School of Music.

--

As a teacher, I believe that the best approach is a naturalistic one. I like to let students discover things that interest them on their own while guiding them in the right direction by ensuring the use of good fundamentals. When a student is enjoying what they are working on in a lesson is when they are most attentive and absorbent of information. Therefore, if a student seems to respond more to a specific kind of music, teaching method, etc., I will likely incorporate that into my lesson as much as possible. I want my lessons to be fun and enjoyable while at the same time setting students on a path for success in music or whatever discipline they may pursue!

We recently started piano lessons with Ms Lydia and we can’t say enough good things. Our daughter Emerson asks each day if Ms Lydia is coming to play piano. And we believe that is because of Ms Lydia's positive attitude, happy personality and ability to make learning music so much fun! Ms Lydia has already taught my daughter so much in regards to music and reading notes. Emerson enjoys each lesson so much that she practices the piano on her own. We are so grateful for Ms Lydia.
