Welcome! My name is Toshi M. I was born in Hiroshima City and raised in Tokyo, Japan.
I am a veteran Japanese language tutor with over 15 years of experience. I teach people of all ages (from 2 to 85 years old) from all over the world, both in person and through online platforms.
I am currently working with a new project through Google called, "Ok Glass." It's a data collection project that leads to the betterment of Google products for voice search capabilities in their Google search engine, Chrome software and Google Glass. Google has chosen me to record, translate and transcribe for these projects within the Japanese division!
***Please read my entire page including the Cancellation, reschedule and late Policy carefully before purchasing lessons!!***
My tutoring policy is not just simply to teach the Japanese language as
a Japanese. No, I always want to teach students more than the language.
If you are interested in the Japanese traditions as well as the language and traditions, then that is a good start for learning. Fun, interest and enjoyment are the best tools for learning with my tutoring.
You will not only be able to speak Japanese, but you will grasp the traits of the Japanese language, traditions, history, culture, and, most importantly, the uniquely Japanese styles of courtesy and customs simultaneously!
I teach practical Japanese so you can actually communicate and exchange proper responses with real Japanese with a sense of smooth conversation. My teaching method varies depending on the student's level.
Are you struggling?
Perhaps you went to a Japanese language school, but when you saw Japanese anime or movies you still did not understand? Then you wondered WHY, didn't you! After all, you paid so much money for school!
Here is the answer: most of the school are not teaching true and complete Japanese! Yes, they are teaching proper Japanese very well. but it only works for some test like a JLPT or speaking at work.
The SECRET is that Japanese people do not speak proper Japanese all the time. They usually speak casual, informal Japanese when they are talking with friends and family, and there are gender differences in spoken Japanese!
Japanese movies and anime cartoons, manga, are mostly stories of friends and family, NOT stories of formal work.
That is why you need to know proper Japanese and casual, informal Japanese both! The Japanese culture and language have customs and orders which you must know and understand completely!
I teach both of these structures at the same time. You need to know when and how to change from proper verbs to casual, informal verbs, and then you will begin to understand the Japanese anime and movies!
I am very strong in teaching proper Japanese, including reading and writing Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. If you are only interested in JLPT Training (any level) or AP Japanese Language and Culture, we can certainly work with that.
However, I also teach business Japanese, word beautification, gender differences in spoken Japanese, proper and casual conversations, polite language, humble language, and respectful verbs. This is necessary for improving your personal and business relations!
I also teach Japanese slang along with many other aspects of the Japanese culture. Whatever you need or want to learn, I am here to assist you!
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, I can tutor you in private lessons at your computer. I am experienced with teaching all levels and all ages!
I give a fun, relaxed lesson and work to teach the precise and gentle true Japanese way in a friendly and open-minded one-on-one session or group lessons via Skype.
I believe you will find everything you need, because I am focused on providing high-quality service and customer satisfaction. I will do everything I can to meet your expectations, and with a variety of offerings to choose from, I am sure you will be happy working with me!
I also teach ORIGAMI (Japanese art of paper folding), Japanese Calligraphy, how to make SUSHI, and how to hold the Japanese Traditional Tea Ceremony, How to make healthy Japanese foods. I am able to give you information about J-POP and traditional Japanese songs as well. We can have fun with those, too.
If you would like to have a lesson once per week or twice per week, let's discuss the possibilities!
I do not usually set up a specific 10-hour or 20-hour plan, because it all depends on the student's level.
I then find the best speed for each student. At that point, if you want to stop at 10 hours, that is fine, and you can stop! Or, if you want to continue to do the class, you can continue. You may stop at 8, 15 or 30 sessions... whatever is best for you!
Do you want to speak Japanese for a few conversations... or do you want to speak Japanese fluently? Or perhaps you want to take a Japanese Language Proficiency Test or AP Japanese Language and Culture Test? That all depends on your achievement!
You can let me know if you want to continue or not anytime! Let's go from there!
If you have any questions about my tutoring, please feel free to contact me through TakeLessons.com.
Hope to see you soon, I look forward to lesson with you! :)
Have an awesome day and God Bless!

Toshi is teaching my 13 year old. It was evident during the first lesson that he was prepared and organized. He was also patient and kind and as a result my daughter is looking forward to his next lesson.

Very informative easy to work with... Had I found him!!
During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a president of SUNY Albany Japanese Student Association and also worked as a TA for Japanese 101 classes, and I absolutely love to teach languages! I understand it is often very hard to find a language tutor outside of the spoken community, and I hope to provide you with the opportunity to be exposed to authentic media sources to acquire natural fluency. Hope to hear from you soon!
はじめまして & thank you for taking a moment to check out my profile! I'm originally from Tokyo Japan, and I moved to NY with my family during high school. I've completed Master's degrees in Language Education & Communication, and Bachelor's Degrees in Music Performance and Political Science. I enjoyed organizing and running language study groups in college, and experienced working as a Japanese TA for several semesters. I LOVE to teach in general, whether it's music or languages, and I personalize most of my teaching materials for individual student. Let me know what YOUR unique short/long-term goals are, along with interest topics, and we'll work it out! Thanks again, and I'm excited to hear from you!
Hikaru is down to earth, conversational and a great teacher. I have already learned so much from her. I can't say enough good things about her. If you make time to study on your own, in conjunction with her lessons you'll be picking up the language in no time at all!

My daughter loves her instructor and was very happy with her.
I've been studying Japanese got 7 years now. I can teach you basic Japanese.
I've been sewing since I was 13. I've sewn things over the years such as dresses, pajamas. I do a lot of tailoring things too. I just love to sew, and I love teaching people to sew too!
The way that I teach is to help the student develop their own style. I have students work on their own individual projects that they pick out while asking me questions that they might have while they are doing their project.
However, if they would like there is an option for me to develop lessons for the student on certain sewing techniques that the student could learn. Although, be aware that learning how to sew takes time and that all the techniques of sewing cannot be done all at once.
Then, there is the third option that the lesson could be a mix of the student doing what they want (choosing their own project) and learning some pre-designed
My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson. I would like for all of my students within the first lesson to finish either of two basic projects (pajama pants or a draw string bag).
My lessons are not like videos you may find online. Meaning projects will take longer than you think they will. I will work with you to properly construct a quality finished project without too many frustrations and in a timely manner. I recommend buying lessons in 90 minute packages, since sewing always takes longer than expected.

She had a PowerPoint ready on the technique I wanted to learn.
Hi, I’ve taught Japanese since 2002 and I’ve always enjoyed teaching and interacting with students. I have taught American adults and college students for over 5 years now. Teaching Japanese to American military personnel and spouses who were stationed in Japan was the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. They truly needed the language skills to live in Japan, and they really appreciated that they were able to learn survival Japanese that’s instantly useful out in town.
I grew up in Japan and came to US to go to college. Since I was a college student, I taught Japanese to middle and high school students during summer in Japan. I have a Master of Education in TESL. Yes, I used to teach English more vigorously, but I found teaching Japanese more rewarding. I teach all levels including those who are starting out and also want to improve their fluency and understand the culture and history! I’m looking forward to working with whoever is interested in my language :) Thank you!!
I started my teaching career when I was a college student. In Japan, I taught both English and Japanese to middle and high school students at a private academy. I have also taught Japanese to adults especially the spouses stationed in Japan and also at community college. I have the Master of Education in TESL; therefore, I’ve taught English more vigorously, but know what it takes to be successful at second language acquisition. I really find it rewarding to teach those who are interested in Japanese language and culture.
I like to get to know your learning styles and what motivates you. I will cater to your needs and make your own lesson plan just for you.
I love teaching and discovering my own culture through the eyes of the students. I love to meet new people and just love the people who want to learn a foreign language. It gives y
ou an opportunity to widen your view of the world!
I’ve also played the piano since I was 3 years old and have the Yamaha certification; therefore, I teach piano too. I also love to play!!
Today, I have full Japanese fluency, and have worked in both Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture--the deep countryside--and the hectric center of Tokyo. But, like so many of you, I started learning Japanese on my own, with only textbooks and cassette tapes. I am almost fully self-taught, and didn't take my first actual 'Japanese class' until my time at Florida State University. Starting out learning at age six, I understand what works and what doesn't when learning at home. My lessons consist of real-world examples and pop-culture related materials, that won't lose your attention.
I also cultivate lessons depending on what you struggle with. Having trouble with Kanji? I can help untangle all of that confusion. Need grammar help? We'll chat until the grammar just comes naturally. Just let me know your goals, and we'll work together!
I'm a Japanese translator and teacher, who has lived everywhere from Tokyo, Japan to Salem, Oregon and everywhere in between. Currently based in Mississippi, I'd love to share the incredible gift of language with those who have a passion for Japan and Japanese culture!
I began learning Japanese at the age of six, when I fell into a world of anime and video games. Largely self-taught, I graduated from Florida State University in 2012 with a B. A. in Japanese Language and Culture, and moved to Japan three months later.
In Japan, I was an educator for a few years in the countryside, before moving to Tokyo to work at a financial company as a translator and editor. In 2015, I passed the JLPT N1, the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, held in only six cities in the US.
I have worked as a translator for seven yea
rs, and In the past, I worked with emmy-award winning director Leo Eaton, as a translator and editor for the PBS documentary 'Sacred Journeys.'
As someone who loves popular culture, and sees anime, manga and video games as excellent outlets to help Japanese stick in the minds of students, my lessons are hand-crafted for every student, and not bland or regurgitated material. Japanese is difficult, but with some confidence and passion, it's a gift that young people can enjoy for a lifetime.
I am happy to teach from my home in Madison, but am also happy to teach at nearby establishments, such as Starbucks or the local library. Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions!
I lived in Hiroshima, Japan for two years. Before I left, I simply wanted a teacher to offer common phrases and cultural tips. If you plan to move to Japan or visit Japan I can help. I'll teach you basic phrases, important etiquette, and fun cultural facts that Japanese residents know but you don't (yet!!!).
Need help in Japanese class? I speak conversational Japanese. I read and write 200 kanji, hiragana, and katakana. Frankly, I enjoy studying the language and want to help you ace the class.
I am a Japanese teacher and ESL teacher currently working on my masters in Education. I lived in Japan from March of 2017 though March of 2019 where I taught in the Japanese public school system.
I prepare students to travel to Japan for business, educational, or professional purposes. To these students I teach specific phrases and cultural etiquette. I also teach beginner to intermediate-level Japanese to students interested in the language for any purpose.
Whether you plan a trip to Japan, are currently enrolled in Japanese classes and need a tutor, or simply find the language fascinating (like I do), I can provide you with the strategies and lessons necessary to grow your vocabulary and comprehension.
I'm preparing for an extended trip to Japan, and I really wanted some in person help to make sure I didn't totally flounder once I got there. Amy was a super friendly and super patient teacher. I never felt uncomfortable practicing or asking for help multiple times on things that I wasn't getting. I would absolutely recommend Amy to anybody trying to learn Japanese.
I am a native Japanese speaker and I love teaching! It's a joy for me to teach Japanese to students who are interested in learning about the language. I have been teaching Japanese for over 20 years. I do not just teach Japanese, I also teach you the culture if you are interested in learning about it. The Japanese culture has strong ties with the language. My philosophy of learning Japanese is through Immersion environment. I have my own technique that I show my student to improve their vocabulary, writing, speaking and listening. And mostly I make it fun! I received my AA from Japanese college from Hagoromo College in Osaka and MBA from university in the US. I had worked for various companies in the US. I tailor my lesson to each individual level and goal.
I look forward to hearing from you.
I love teaching especially language as I am passionate about language. I also speak Chinese and currently learning Spanish. I have been teaching Japanese about 20 years from the age of 2 to adults. I do not just teach but I also try to give you the culture/background of the Japanese language. I believe that helps for many people to master the vocabulary, listening, writing and speaking. I also have worked with companies of understanding about the business culture in Japan.
Are you looking to read manga? Watch anime or play Japanese video games without subtitles? I can help you get started on your Japanese language learning journey!
I moved to Japan in 2014 where I taught English, tutored Japanese to other foreigners, and did translations & interpretations in an office. I lived there for 5 years and learned how to speak, read, and write Japanese. I currently have an N2 Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) certification -- which means that I'm at a native-like fluency!
I'm currently back in the US now where I help tutor those who are looking to learn Japanese!
So, if you would love
Hey there! My name is Nic and I absolutely love Japan and its culture. In 2014, I moved to Japan and lived in a rural town where I was quickly made to speak Japanese everyday. I studied Japanese daily and quickly made many great Japanese friends! We talked a lot about Japanese culture, anime, manga, and other daily life topics in Japan.
Before I left Japan, I took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and passed the N2 level, which means that I am of native-like fluency! I often help tutor and explain Japanese language concepts to those who are interested in learning the language in both a basic or a higher-level capacity. I try my best to explain difficult topics in easy-to-understand ways with both explanations and examples. A lot of those who I have helped in the past have told me that this was incredibly helpful as they can both gra
sp why certain words or grammar points are used and how to use them!
If you're interested in learning Japanese with me, feel free to reach out and we'll set up a time. I'm looking forward to helping you achieve your Japanese language goals!
