Why don't my recordings sound like that? We have all asked the question. A phenomenally produced record has a certain shimmer to it; an airy, open feeling as if the music just floats effortlessly through the air. The Kick is punchy and thick. The Snare sounds like someone is snapping an oak branch in concert hall. The Vocal seems to just sit in the mix perfectly over the defined yet MASSIVE Bass part. There are three main components to a great recording: 1) An amazing performance 2) high quality equipment 3) Sound Engineering skill.
The first two criteria are out of my hands (I will say that getting a good take will ALWAYS be better than doing a great edit. I will also say that high quality does not always mean high price. That being said, when you get past a certain cost threshold on things like Microphones, Preamps, and A/D Coverters, it will make your mixing significantly easier as you will be dealing with a more 'natural sounding' raw file).
