I have been writing and composing music since the age of 14. I believe that songwriting, arranging, and creative expression is an essential part of learning to play any musical instrument. Once you get the basics of your instrument down, my curriculum begins to focus more on analysis of your favorite songs, the necessary music theory, and the creative process involved in composing and arranging your own music.

About Dave

Dave K. began playing guitar at the age of 10. His influences include Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Guthrie Govan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny and Scott Henderson. At the age of 17 he began teaching private guitar and bass lessons to classmates

I haven't played the violin since I was in middle school, and I wanted to re-learn to play it. I am so glad I picked Dave, he is very professional and made me feel very comfortable. I jumped in with both feet and Dave made the instructions at our first lesson easy for me to understand. Excellent location and studio is awesome.
Rushia Hendricks
Excellent lesson. Does a wonderful job at taking older students and gently holding their feet to the fire to bring out the best- even under the most challenging of circumstances. Kudos to being such a uniquely great teacher!

I realize it was the first lesson but I was a little disappointed that we spend nearly the entire time on housekeeping items, like canceling and re-scheduling appointments. I think that could have been covered with an e-mail or handout. I also thought we spent too much time going over the differences between acoustic and electric guitars - considering my age and background. Would have liked to see him demonstrate what I was asked to practice before the next lesson instead of just being told to refer to the workbook.

Songwriting is tricky. There are formulas one can use, but do they work for your specific needs? What about the dreaded writer's block? What if you've never written a song? What do you do if you can't finish a song you've started? How do you keep from getting too repetitive in your style? All of these questions and more have valid and applicable answers and exercises. I can teach the standard songwriting structure, but I do more than that. I help you find your true creative style. We'll discover your favorite and most effective uses of words and melody. You have a creative voice that is truly unique. Now let's help you use it.

I've been writing rock songs for 18 years and have played in numerous bands during that time. I can help guide you through many of the trappings that come with writing songs, such as: writing music that strengthens the song not your ego, creating a your own style, avoiding repetition in form, applying advanced harmony to melody, using odd time signatures, and a variety of other options to make your music really stand out.

About Jeremie

I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for 20 years. I have played professionally in numerous bands and ensembles ranging from jazz to folk to rock, and I've been writing music for the same length of time. I currently perform with one of my students from TakeLessons named Mackenzie O'Brie

I've helped many band members, friends and students to write songs and would be glad to help any future students. But songwriting is a very personal thing and so rather than push too many ideas on a student, I find it's ideal to provide them with tools and let their creativity take over.

About Ryan

Ryan is a musician from Logan Square who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. My passion for music began when I was seven years old. It all started for me with composition and improvisation. I love to create my own original music and I have since the very beginning of my musical journey. To this day, composition and improvisation are some of my favorite things to do and favorite things to teach. My love of creating original music inspired me to write an educational book on the topic and develop my own unique method for approaching these topics.

My teaching philosophy includes an integrated method of intellectual and creative development. It is truly unfortunate that so often music theory is presented as a mere collection of naming systems and rules. To me, understanding music with the mind is a key ingredient to becoming an effective and inspired artist. In music lessons, I teach not just how to talk about music but the fascinating complexity of how music operates - the fundamental principles that illuminate the translation of sound into thoughts and ...

I've been writing for 24 years, solo and as part of a band. I think I have an especially unique perspective of writing as a vocalist primarily, which can come with its own unique set of approaches and challenges. I like to work on songwriting as an authentic and intuitive extension of each individual's experience and creativity. There's no one-size-fits-all way to songwrite, and in working with my students on songwriting, my approach is to help guide you through what your process is, including finding and honing inspiration, making writing a part of your every day routine, lyric- and melody-writing, arrangement, dynamics, etc.

About Tracey

I've been singing, performing, songwriting, and studying voice for 20+ years. I'm alumnus of both Berklee College of Music, where I studied Voice/Vocal Performance, and Musician's Institute, where I earned a degree in Voice / Vocal Performance. I've been teaching since 2006, and work with a wide ra

Tracy is an expert and has taken me to places in singing that I was ‘scared’ of. I have seen improvements even after 4 lessons. Tracey is a caring and practical tutor. I highly recommend her!

I had my first lesson with Tracey today and I can't wait to take more! I'm a person who likes knowing how stuff works, why we may do something a certain way, what I should be paying attention to etc etc, and I love that she is willing to break everything down and explain in a very relatable way. She's very patient, easy-going, and despite how uncomfortable it is for me to sing in front of others, she made me feel like she's truly there to go along the journey with me, to improve and discover my voice with no judgments. Tracey is the best!

"I've been learning songwriting and music theory from David and it couldn't be any better. He's very professional and personable, and he makes sure to work with you, not above you. He shows a genuine enthusiasm for his students' musical interests and formulates instruction around them. David encourages questions, which creates a comfortable and effective teacher-student interaction. Between my weekly lessons, I find myself impatiently counting down the days until my next scheduled lesson. While the genre of songwriting that I've been working on with David's guidance has been contemporary Christian, I'm sure that he would be an effective teacher in any genre, whether the student were writing songs or playing them."

Songwriting Tips: 11 Examples From 7 Hit Songs

Writing a catchy song that delivers a strong message can be quite difficult. Here, voice teacher Emmanuel N. shares the songwriting tips you can glean from several famous singers...     When it comes to lyric-writing and songwriting, nobody can really teach you how to do it – it’s better to show by example. The Anatomy of a Hit Pop Song [Infographic]

When you're learning how to write a song, looking at how other songs are structured can be a great place to start.
