About Cathryn

Hello! My name is Cathy and I have been teaching voice (singing) for over 30 years. But don't let that fool you into thinking I'm a stogy old girl who doesn't have a pulse on contemporary music. I teach pop, country, broadway, folk, whatever it is your interested in. I do teach with vocal exercises because without them no changes will be made and that's the whole point right to change your voice? However you do get to sing songs. I teach, so that you will change your voice and succeed in whatever avenue you want. My degree is in Vocal Performance from Northeastern Illinois University and one year of Masters work in Drama from DePaul University.

I also teach ESL, Reading, Writing, History which I have done for the past ten years. I use a variety of techniques since no two people are alike to help you learn English or the Ameri

can lifestyle. I presently teach Caterpillar employees, spouses and children. Let me teach you and see how far we can go.

Thank you.

About Mark

I am a professional saxophonist, (all saxes) a retired High School Band Director and Woodwind Repair Technician. I started private teaching as a junior in High School and have continued intermittently to the present. Almost all of my private students became first chair players. I currently play 1st alto sax in a professional concert band. I was blessed to be in the top band at the University of Minnesota which toured the Soviet union playing 28 concerts and ending up in the White House playing a concert for the President of the United States. I have worked with students and adults in a teaching setting in music, the BSA and Human Resources.

I am writing in support of Mark Levenson. I have known Mark for over ten years. In this time I have been lucky to work with him on several projects. Mark is a very fine musician and a great person. 'For the past several years he has been Principal Alto and Saxophone Section Leader for the Sarasota Concert Band. This is a semi-professional Symphonic Band that I conduct. His playing is at an artist level and his commitment to the ensemble is exceptional. When needed to help out, Mark will gladly switch to play soprano, tenor or baritone saxophone for the good of the group. And he plays these equally well. Also, about once a year, Mark would take the baton and guest conduct with great ease and artistry. Mark also worked for the Board of Directors of the SCB. In this capacity he was very helpful in many aspects of keeping the band running smoothly. Raising money, suggesting music, publicity, concert and rehearsal logistics and more are all elements Mark was always willing to help with. His previous experience as a high school band director makes him able to understand and have expertise in all areas of band affairs. He is always willing to help with a positive attitude. His experience in Human Resources also helped in matters of personnel and logistics.

Another way I have been involved with Mark is through his teaching. The SCB has a commitment to fostering music education in our area. Mark has served as a teacher and mentor to many high school band students in our area. We run an Honor Band, a Summer Music Camp and regular playing opportunities for middle and high school students. Mark's hard work and high level of knowledge has always helped our groups..

Mark is also a very fine musical instrument repairman. He does a great job repairing both woodwind and brass instruments. For the past decade or so he has been my main repairman for my clarinets and saxophones that I play professionally.

When Mark and his family decided to leave our area, it was a big loss for us. Besides myself, many other music teachers, performers and students miss the influence of Mark. I know that Mark will continue his high standards and exceptional commitment where ever he is. Our loss is your gain. I enthusiastically recommend Mark Levenson to you.

Mark is a very clear and learned instrumentalist, my instrument of choice is the Saxophone. His approach is very relaxing and direct, Mark is very complimentary towards the things I did correctly which is a real plus for a student like myself.

I know his knowledge base is deep and look forward to actually picking up something new and redirecting bad habits. Tone, Breathing, relaxing, improving the embouchure enjoy what your doing was his focus on the first visit. 1st lesson five stars...

About Melissa

I am a professional singer, pianist, and photographer. I studies at EIU with a Bachelors of Music, specifically voice and piano.

Voice students can expect to improve week to week in their vocal technique. Every voice has a unique timbre; I teach students to release built up tension and apply foundational techniques in order to unlock their own individual sound. I can help any student to sing with freedom, confidence, and expression.

I teach piano students of all different ages and experience levels. I studied classical piano for over 20 years, and jazz piano for part of those years as well. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

Some of my past students have gone on to study music in col

lege themselves and become professional musicians.

My personal passion is classical piano music but I firmly believe that great technique is essential to any and every style. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!

About Lisa

Hi there! My name is Lisa and I'm a professional bassist, composer and touring artist, working in the field of jazz/improvised music as well as in popular/contemporary music. I have 10+ years of teaching experience and hold a master’s degree in both music pedagogy and music performance from Bern University of the Arts, Switzerland.

Over the years I have been teaching bass students of all ages and levels, from absolute beginners to advanced instrumentalists, from ages 6-60+. I find joy in
helping all of my students defining and reaching their goals and experiencing the fun in playing music.

Some of my main goals in music teaching are:

- developing a realistic and satisfying practice routine
- reaching a deeper understanding of the instrument through connecting imagination/pre-hearing and movement
- working on rhythm and time, exploring

the role of the bass in the rhythm section (and in music generally)
- playing with bow, strengthening the left hand, control of intonation and classical repertoire
- understanding and playing with chord symbols, practical music theory
- improvisation – solos over chord progressions, over pedals, with or without accompaniment, extended technique  and free improvisation
- sight-reading
- the ability of transcribing music (and having a lot of fun!)
- discovering jazz, blues, folk, improvisation, indie rock, R’n’B, singer/songwriter, classical repertoire and much more!

Lisa is the best!!! I came to her as a complete beginner, having tried both guitar and piano but always having been drawn to electric & upright bass, and a bit daunted on how to jump in. She was the perfect person to start with - warm, supportive, and encouraging. She is a super badass musician and the way she plays is inspiring! But more importantly, she knows how to make whatever we're learning interesting and fun. From Peter Gabriel songs to Pink Floyd to Gershwin, I can't recommend her enough.

Lisa has given me a better insight on the double bass and how to physically approach the instrument in a healthy way. Furthermore her creativity and fun with music has been a great push to expand my creativity through the instrument. I would definitely recommend lessons with her as she provides you with a strong foundation.

"Ahmad is the BEST! I usually feel pretty self-conscious when learning something new, but never the case with Ahmad. Weekly lessons were always super fun a
nd a great escape from work. He individualizes his classes and keeps your preferred genre in mind. He even wrote out the music based on youtube videos of my favorite songs (guitar or not!) Very talented and knowledgeable about his craft. Cannot think of one negative thing. SUPERB!"

"A nurturing teacher

I have worked with Desmond previously (as an accompanist for one of his choirs). Desmond is a very gentle, kind spirit and I believe
he would be a very nurturing teacher for a voice student. He also has the advantage of having a very broad background in different styles of music, from reggae to jazz/pop to classical."

"Wow! What an experience.

Arnell is a brilliant instructor.she is motivating, exciting, fun,. creative and very informative.she is a miracle worker. Arnel
l has done wonders with our 3 children.before they started the piano and singing classes with Arnell, my husband and I realized that it would be very difficult and very challenging for our 8 year old son to learn the piano, seeing that he was diagnosed with a learning disability. to our amazement we were very pleased to see our child, our children reading musical notes and playing the piano fluently in such a very short time,it brought tears to our eyes. Yes my family is very blessed to have Arnell as a piano and singing instructor."

6 New Ideas for Piano Warm-Ups

By Suzy S.

We all know the importance of warming up - but do you actually commit to a proper warm-up every time you sit down to play the piano?  If you're in a rush, it's easy to forget it.  However, an effective warm-up is essential for avoiding injuries, such as tendonitis, and can also help increase the dexterity of your fingers and hands, allowing you to reach certain tough chords. Before you get into the "meat and potatoes" of your practice session, you'll want to spend a good 10-15 minutes focus …
