For Barbershoppers I need a smooth transition to my falsetto. Kwame put me at ease, we did some exercises and found the transition without me even noticing the change. He is a gifted teacher. I look forward to our next appointment as we start reading music from the Barbershoppers music book. I did not expect such a warm atmosphere. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Students of all ages in a personal relaxed atmosphere.
Customized to each student. If the student has not previously taken lessons I use Piano Adventures as the basic course guide. I have found it the most productive and enjoyable for my students. I uses a minimum of the Lesson and Theory book for my younger students with either the basic course or Accelerated course depending on their age and maturity. Adults begin with the All In one adult book. I add the other books that accompany each level based on the particular students needs and interests. I believe that a good grounding in Theory is essential as a student who becomes proficient in sight reading, no matter how well he/she plays by ear, will find that the doors for lifetime musical fulfillment with be much wider. However, with a student who has already had some lessons I will be happy to continue with any method that the student is currently using.
I also believe in supplementing the Piano course with the student's favorite ...

Kathy came to my home for my lesson. She has a very pleasant personality and it is very easy to follow her instructions. She kept the pace up, yet did not overload me. It's been a number of years since I have played and she did an excellent job on getting me back on the keys. I am looking forward to our next lesson.

Ginni always praises her and makes her feel like a superstar. "I cannot express strongly enough how lucky we feel to have had Ard as our children’s piano instructor. We have two children, 9 and 11, and they had both been taking piano lessons for years before we moved to the Indianapolis area. While we really enjoyed the children's first teacher, Ard truly taught on another level. He is an absolute professional - reliable, accomplished, experienced.. Within the first few weeks, Ard was able to accurately identify my children's strengths and weaknesses and design individualized learning programs for both of them and they both improved greatly with his help.

Ard is just wonderful with the children. He was able to teach them at their level with an enthusiasm, kindness, and insightfulness that engaged them immediately. And, although Ard has a playful side with the children, he was also very serious about learning music, and there were very clear expectations for the children. The lessons were a perfect blend of fun and learning.

Ard is not only an incredibly talented musician, but also a passionate, energetic, and wonderfully interesting person. If we ever move back to the area, we would call on Ard again in a heartbeat."

"Having Marty as a piano teacher has been amazing. I’m 3 lessons in and I’m very surprised at how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time with Marty’s guidance. Marty does not have a set curriculum that you must follow. Instead, she forms the lessons around the student and their needs. Marty is so great at interpreting where you are, the pace you need to go, and the best practices that will fit your personality/habits. She provides assignments that will keep you busy throughout the week as you practice. I’ve never felt like I’ve been pushed too hard either. Marty gives assignments that will not be too overwhelming, but at the same time, they are ones that are very fun because you see the improvement in your playing. To be able to find this balance shows the sign of a great teacher in my eyes. Only 3 lessons in, and yet I felt compelled to write this review in such a short amount of time. Thank you Marty!"

Teaching Piano in Columbia

By Tara G.-Columbia Piano Teacher

As a piano teacher in Columbia, I have very much enjoyed my first group of piano students through TakeLessons! I love that I am able to work with students of all ages who are pursuing various styles of music. I enjoy knowing that I am helping adults pursue a new found passion for music. Yet, at the same time I get to help young students begin their journey to becoming life-long music lovers! Additionally, teaching voice and piano lessons has helped improve my own skills as a choir director at the high school where I also work. My improvement has also helped my high school choir students soar to new heights, thanks to this great opportunity provided to me by TakeLessons.

My favorite teaching memory so far is when one of my young students

...

was working on note identification. I asked her, “What kind of note is this?” (The answer I was looking for was “dotted quarter note”.) She replied, “That’s a spotted quarter note.” I smiled for the rest of the lesson! Memories like this make teaching lessons in Columbia so enjoyable!
