Hi, my name is Kojo and I have been teaching children & adults the traditional music of the West African Djembe for a little more than 15 years. I bring my unique experience and teaching style which has been perfected through years of Teaching Artist work in Brooklyn, NY.

Playing the djembe is a great way to enter into the percussion world. There are many playing opportunities (if you're willing to look) to play with an ensemble such as a church band or jamming with friends. Everyone needs a good djembe player! In djembe lessons my goal is to teach you basic techniques, music theory, and rhythms to get you comfortable enough to use your djembe skills to perform confidently with a musical group.

I have been teaching for about 8 years with students ranging from beginner to advanced. All ages are welcome! I also welcome all different styles of music from rock, to jazz, and even classical. Each lesson is catered specifically to the student. I want each student to be able to reach their own specific goals, while having the time of their life!

Find the voice of the djembe without the pain! Learn to play your drum along with any kind of music! You will learn to speak the words which represent the tones of the drum, and quickly learn multiple parts of rhythms you'll remember forever! We can also explore the family of 3 Dunun (Bass Drums) and the other rhythmic instruments such as shakers and bells. Easily understand the "clave" patterns and rhythmic structures of African drumming, with a look to their roots in countries such as Guinea and Senegal, as well as how they have evolved into popular American culture.

Hands on technique on basic tones for a variety of drums, most importantly yours.
Stylistic and traditional rhythms as well as exercises to lay a solid foundation to build your skill on. Personal and fun to play at any level.

Djembe:
A rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa. Starting with basics of learning hand techniques, rhythms, tuning, and bass, tone, and slap, which have low, medium, and high pitch, to play along with songs.
