Suzuki pedagogy employed for beginners

About Farobag
Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Devel
opment Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

*** Lesson Details ***
Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lesson take place in the living room. Driveway parking. No pets.

*** Travel Equipment ***
None; I do expect a reasonably good piano / keyboard at a student's home.

*** Specialties ***
Traditional and Suzuki-based education. Performance and musicality training is open to all instrumentalists.

*** CD's***
Classical Energy, Triton Sound, TS 8501

I've been playing a few instruments for 23 years, and finally decided to get into violin. Farobag made me realize that I know next to nothing about the violin, and there is so much to learn. I played only a few notes in my first lesson, but his instruction was worth every penny. I am very excited for the next lesson and look forward to learning everything I can from Farobag. Highly recommended.

Mr. Cooper is an experienced teacher. He teaches piano, violin & vocal from basic to advance level. My son has been taking piano classes from him for the past 3+ years. He loves to go to Mr. Cooper's classes. The foremost quality in Mr. Cooper is that he seeks perfection and tries to imbibe the same in his students. He encourages all his students to perform their best and is extremely patient in dealing with his students. Mr. Cooper lets me sit in my son's lessons and I got my 101 on classical music with these sessons. I can appreciate what my son plays and also now able to appreciate classical music in general.
Mr. Cooper encourages all his students to participate in IMA annual contests and puts a lot of effort in preparing his students for the same.

About Tracy
I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so
I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

"Experienced violin teacher of 29 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of classical violin skills. I specialize in Suzuki , and fiddle Celtic music etc...,

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Ever wanted to learn to play violin/viola well? Without making scratchy noises?

Welcome to my music studio where your violin playing will become vibrant and exciting! I have been a Violin teacher for more than 20 years and I have had a great success with my students. Many of them have won the prestigious awards and college degrees. I have prepared them for the competition, auditions, and concerts on high-end stages. My students play with a lot of joy and enthusiasm. What makes my studio so successful is that I tailor my method individually to each student's needs, rather than "one approach fits all". I work a lot on proper student's set-up and posture, then technique and musicality. I firmly believe every student should be a well-rounded musician so part of my curriculum and lesson plans include a strong understanding of music theory and sight reading, just to name a few.

Looking forward to meeting you and having fun playing!

Suzuki Method

About Dan
I am a member of the Chicago Northwest Symphony Orchestra. I have been instructing students from kindergarten to high-school all over Chicago area for the past thirteen years. My highest accomplishment is having a high-school sophomore student playing first chair first violin on Chamber Orchestra and third chair first violin in Symphonic Orchestra at Maine Township High School, Park Ridge, Illinois. Other accomplishments are having students prepared for Granquist Memorial Music Competition, Geneva Illinois.

My lessons are always focused on adapting the violin practice to fit the character of the individual student. Besides learning good violin performance practices, the student will shape up character by developing strengthening the brain which will help in development of overall cognitive activity.

Learning to play violin not only
opens the mind for greater understanding of artistic expressions but also adds to the quality of experiencing life more complex otherwise not possible in absence of music.

I like making music fun. With the knowledge that playing an instrument is very difficult, my approach to teaching is to make each task seem as easy as possible. I promote the art of listening to music just as much as playing the notes on the page. I incorporate all the important aspects of violin playing: posture, sight-reading, technique, scales, and musicality to turn all my students into the best musicians they can be!

About Annarita
My name is Annarita and I am a violinist from Des Plaines, Illinois. I began playing at the age of seven, and by the time I was in high school I realized I wanted to make playing and teaching violin my career.

In 2013, I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in music from Loyola University Chicago. During my college career I had the opportunity to spend a semester in Vienna, Austria to expand my knowledge of the classical music world.

In 2010, I began playing with the Fox Valley Orchestra - an ensemble of which I am still a part and consider my second home. I also perform regularly with the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra, Stargate Productions, as well as the string orchestra at Northeastern Illinois University. In 2015 I had the opportunity to perform with Rod Stewart...one of my favorite memories!

Besides my passion for perf
orming, I also very much love teaching. I worked with The People's Music School and with the Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project in Chicago as a violin teacher and ensemble coach. I also teach a wide range of private students.

*** Lesson Details ***
1. I set goals with my students and give them the tools they need in order to reach them.
-I focus a lot on note reading, music theory, practice
techniques, and bodily awareness to ensure each student
understands every aspect of their instrument and music
2. I explain how the assigned studies will help improve students' overall ability to play the violin
-I'm not a "spoon-feeder" - I teach my students how to
teach themselves and think independently!
3. I keep my lessons at an appropriate difficulty for each student.
4. Most importantly, I teach students how to practice efficiently and with patience. Improvement does not happen overnight; but with a little focus and patience, it will come a lot sooner than you think!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must have an instrument, music stand, assigned music, and a metronome if necessary.

In my 10+ years of teaching violin to hundreds of students, I've always believed in nurturing a love for playing the instrument and that the best practicing stems from passion and playfulness. Before moving to Chicago, I kept a full teaching studio in Santa Monica, CA and helped start several youth music programs. I approach all levels with a hybrid of traditional and modern methods and an emphasis on technical proficiency through improvisation and creativity.

About Javier
For over 10 years, I've taught violin to hundreds of students of all ages and levels, many from their very first notes on the instrument. Lessons are always engaging and inspiring! I'm here to help, so wherever you want to go in your musical journey, I want to help you get there.

Besides being passionate about teaching, I'm a professional touring and recording violinist. I'm proud to say that my students have won top awards (Topanga Fiddle Competition, Royal Conservatory Music Development Program) and placed in some of the top youth orchestras in the country. I maintained a studio of 20-30 students for many years in Los Angeles at the SOL-LA Music Academy, before recently moving to Chicago.

My goal as a teacher is to help the student achieve their goals on the instrument. This is possible by providing the tools such as references and techniques to be able to develop themselves into better violinists and musicians.

About Rachel
What I love about teaching is seeing how students develop and own their skills through their work. I have the honest belief that any person can achieve whatever they want to achieve as long as they put their mind to it.
