Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.
Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.
The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.
*** Lesson Details *** Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

It was only a first lesson but I can already tell I'm going to be taking more lessons with Daniel. He's very knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated. He detailed a specific plan for me to work on that isn't too rigid or boring, I'm looking forward to relearning the flute with him.

I love everything about teaching! I love music; it is my life. I sleep, breathe and dream music. I am a Columbia University Chicago graduate; I graduated with a degree in Music with a concentration in Classical Voice. I have performed in numerous operas and musicals, as well as, sung on Gospel Cruises all around the world. In my eyes, the student is the main focus so whatever issues, concerns or request the student may have I will treat them with priority. I am all about strengthening the natural born talent and making my students the best vocalist they can be. I'm here to serve the students and that is what I will do until they are confident in their gift...music.

les that may seem too hard to the student. I will start my students off with the basic vocal warm ups and then move on to material that they would like to cover and if so the student doesn't have material to cover, I will present them with material. Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

Jesus has more than 20 years experience teaching piano and 10 years teaching the Suzuki piano method, with dozens of his students playing successfully in recitals, competitions, and auditions around the Chicago area.
He completed his Masters of Music in Piano Performance with a scholarship from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Il. Renowned Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and Dr. Ludmila Lazard were his advisers and professors. In addition, during his program at Roosevelt University, Jesus took a course aimed at developing figure base and harpsichord performance with Dr. David Schrader.
In 2012 he was certified piano Suzuki teacher by the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Jesus performs solo recitals and lieder by Rachmaninoff, Shubert, and Schumann with his wife the soprano Darina Assenova in festivals such as “Shubert
iade”, which is organized by Pianoforte Foundation in Chicago and Make Music Chicago.
He often performs in Cultural Festivals in Mexico and United States and has performed with major orchestras as a soloist and as accompanist.
All his piano students are active as performers. Jesus always encourages them to perform in public, looking for piano festivals, competitions, recitals, auditions and any opportunities where they can showcase their talent. His students have been accepted in pre-college music schools in Chicago.
*** Lesson Details *** I focus on the basic piano technique skills when I start with a new student, it includes good posture of the body, good hand shape, firm fingertips, loose arm weight, good position of each finger, and flexible wrist. I always look for a rich tone production when playing each key of the keyboard in order to create a beautiful musical discourse throughout the piano piece.
When the student is from 3 to 6 years old I use the Suzuki method. When the student is older than 6 I combine the traditional and Suzuki method having great results with the student's performances.
My Philosophy: All my students learn to play piano in an artistry, confident, and joyful way.
*** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in living room with upright piano, couches, bookshelves, etc. Parents can sit in on lessons.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide copies of some piano works. But I also expect my students to buy their own books and have their own instrument.
*** Specialties *** For beginners, I use either the Faber or Thomson method. I can teach the Suzuki method too. I specialize in Classical music, but I can also teach pop music for piano.
Jesus has been really helpful in improving my technique and introducing me to challenging pieces. I have been playing piano for about 14 years and took a long break from working on my music. At first, I was skeptical about taking lessons again, but I decided to start roughly two months ago. Since starting lessons with Jesus, I'm playing pieces that I would have never chosen for myself on my own and tackling them even faster than I thought I could. Aside from learning new, advanced pieces, he is really helping me with my technique as a performer. Jesus fosters a welcoming environment and I genuinely look forward to my lesson each week. My girls started taking lessons from Mr. Garcia at age 4. He is an excellent instructor and keeps lessons and weekly practice assignments fun and challenging. He uses a combination of methods to best suit the interests of each of my daughters. They really look forward to their weekly lessons. I have seen significant progress in their piano skills. Mr, Garcia is very good at acknowledging their accomplishments which is extremely important for young, beginning piano players. I highly recommend him.
Classically trained pianist and singer. When it comes to piano, I have over 20 years of training under my belt. Majority of my experience deals with classical and accompaniment but have also studied jazz and contemporary. In the way of singing, I am a classically trained singer who majored in Opera Performance in college. I have plenty of performance experience from being on the stage in operas and musical to performing with choirs and solo recitals. In voice lessons a student can choose to specialize in opera or if they were to take standard voice lessons, they could expect a wide variety of music focusing on multiple languages and genres including musical theater.
With every musician, Music Theory is crucial. All students will learn the basics of reading music and those who choose, can go beyond to learn the structure of music a
nd why music is the way it is with Music Theory lessons.
I am qualified to teach all levels of piano, opera, and voice.I take a real hands on, active approach to teaching, going beyond just the lesson books.

In high school as part of the National Honors Society, we were asked to tutor once a week and it continued into college when I decided to double major in Psychology taking an interest in adolescence psychology. My strong suits and reading and math but I am more than happy to help in any subject.

*** Lesson Details *** Our sessions will be laid back and easy going. I expect the students to do their work and practice and as long as they are showing progress, we can continue with a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I am patient with my students, and do my best to develop teaching methods unique to each student to give the best experience and set them up for the highest level of success. I don't push students to perfection but rather assist them in reaching their personal best. As long as they are having fun and learning, I know I am doing my job. Music is to be enjoyed and that is my goal with each student.
For voice and piano, students will learn a wide variety of music. I also believe strongly in the power of sight reading. Students will also learn music theory in their lessons. Piano students will follow a lesson book curriculum along with learning scales and sight reading. Voice students will sing from all major languages (English, French, Italian, and German) and practice sight reading skills.
Students should bring a notebook to lessons where notes will be taken on what we accomplished in our lessons and what needs to be worked on for the next lesson. This will usually include a theory sheet, technique work, and songs.
Twice a year I hold a recital where students get to show off to other students and family what they have accomplished in their lessons. With piano students, you will prepare and memorize usually one song. For voice students, you will prepare and memorize two songs, at least one will be in a foreign language.

Studying at the college level taught me a lot about what not to do as a teacher. The material is already difficult enough, so why would I be difficult with you?

*** Studio Equipment *** My teaching studio is just steps away from the Belmont Blue Line stop! Our lessons will be held in a private practice space in my home. The large room has multiple amps and guitars, so there is no need to bring an instrument for lessons if you don't want to! (But, you do need an instrument to practice with outside of our lessons!)

Nicole is available to teach lessons for students of all levels. Beginning her singing career when she was 7, she most recently sang at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, was a winner of the international CS Competition in musical theatre, and is a Chicago F.A.M.E. finalist for Jazz and popular music. Combined with her training and professional experience, Nicole teaches singers to switch gracefully between multiple styles. She practices what she preaches: one night she might be singing Beyoncé, and the next morning she might be singing Handel's Messiah!
