I emphasize a physically relaxed and technically accurate approach to cello playing so that students are free to create music without limitations or physical discomfort.
Though playing an instrument takes hard work, it should be a fun and enjoyable experience too! We will work together to ensure that you are learning pieces that interest you and inspire you to reach the next level. By the end of each lesson you will know what to work on for the week and exactly how to practice in order to achieve the most effective results.

Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and history while focusing on improving their technical facility on the cello. Students also work towards building their comfort with the instrument by practicing increasingly complex exercises and repertoire.

Lessons will be highly interactive and geared towards your personal goals as an aspiring cellist.

My first lesson with Laura was even better than I had hoped. I'm an adult intermediate player who has not played in the past several years. Laura communicated with me several times prior to the lesson to check on my experience, goals, and music requests. During the lesson Laura identified and helped with several problem techniques and provided exercises to help correct them. She was friendly, professional, and made excellent use of our lesson time. She's an excellent coach and I'm so excited to have found her!

My 9 yr old daughter began cello lessons with Quinn about 2 weeks before lockdown started. I was worried that online lessons wouldn't work out, but Quinn has been amazing. She's great at explaining everything so that my daughter understands, and she pushes just enough to keep her interested without being overwhelmed. She also answers questions promptly by email when any problems arise. I can't recommend her highly enough!

"Dwight Anderson was a fabulous cello teacher for my son from preschool through high school. He was, in fact, the best music teacher we ever had for either of my children - through all of their piano, violin and cello instruction. He was consistent and nurturing, able to push the boundaries of expectation, and able to inspire. Although he only taught my son, he influenced my daughter as well by encouraging them to both participate in the GDYO. He was masterful in choosing certain pieces of work that inspired my son to practice and to perform. Even though he certainly assigned scales and etudes, he always allowed him at least one piece of his choosing that gave him such a sense of accomplishment. For example, my son learned to play the prelude of the Bach suite in G even before he started the 1st grade. That is still his favorite piece! And, starting around 7th or 8th grade, he let his pick which "big work" they would tackle for the following year. We went through the Lalo cello concerto, Faure's Elegie, the Saint-Saens concerto, Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody, Dvorak's Rondo, and finally, "The Dvorak", for his senior project in high school. Even though my son didn't always learn all the movements of the concerto or learn it to perfection, Dwight's partnership with my son in picking these pieces gave him such a love of playing the cello! What a wonder and a gift!
In the years since high school, Dwight has kept up with my son, even though he chose a non-music career path and a life in the north east. We will be forever grateful for Dwight and the influence he has had on my son in particular, and, for his influence on the whole family for deepening our appreciation of beautiful music. Thank you, Dwight!"

"I am 43 years old and was scared to take on such a difficult instrument but I really wanted to learn how to play the beautiful cello. I had my first lesson and am very happy with Claire. She is friendly, accommodating, patient, and explains her lesson in a clear and easy manner (as easy as you can get with the cello). I had a lot of questions and she was very open in answering all of them. Although I am still at the very very beginnings of my journey, I am very excited to continue with the cello lessons, thanks to Claire."

"Pecos has been an exceptional instructor for my 15-year-old son with diverse music tastes and who is progressing to intermediate-level cello. Pecos’ instruction is insightful and attentive to the individual student, and my son feels the lessons are valuable and effective. We also appreciate receiving a followup report after each lesson outlining new techniques and practice goals for the next week, a huge improvement to the interpretive “mom notes” my children have had to rely on in past years of string instruction."

"I've had something like 6 or 8 lessons with Chris so far and he's awesome. If you're not sure what to work on he'll come up with a great "standard" curriculum for you, but if you have particular interests or tastes he tailors your lessons accordingly - which keeps you motivated and makes practicing fun. He's got a huge range and can easily switch between styles if you have diverse interests. He's also cool about letting you decide how much focus you want to put on theory and learning to read music, so you never feel like you're just grinding through anything in order to get to the fun stuff. He's also just a really nice, funny dude so lessons are enjoyable from start to finish. I especially like the games he uses to teach various techniques/sight reading/improving your ear, etc. Really glad I ended up taking lessons with Chris, can't recommend him enough. :-)"

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …

What Does it Take to Become a Professional Cello Player?

Pursuing a career in music is a risky decision, because by the nature of the industry few artists can “make it big.” Most artists aren’t pop stars, or even full-time career musicians, and all musicians also teach to remedy this. There are many paths to becoming a professional cello player, and depending on where you start it might be easy or hard to earn a reputation and start making money. I followed an academic path, studying classical music at university and then continuing my research …

Is There Such Thing as a Left-Handed Cello? How to Play as a Leftie

Handedness is the sense that one hand is more dexterous or coordinated compared to the other. Researchers usually determine an individual’s handedness by observing which hand is used to write or eat. Although the causes of handedness are not fully understood, about 10% of the population is left handed or ambidextrous according to Dr. M.K. Holder, a researcher and specialist on handedness. Many left handed students wonder if they will need a specialized instrument in order to learn to play …
