I have over 30 years of experience teaching cello. Every student has different needs; I work with you at whatever point you are at; beginners through advanced students welcome. I have a doctorate in cello. I've played cello all my life; in recent years I have learned (and can teach) 5-string cello, as well.
I recommend lessons 30 minutes in duration for beginners, particularly children. (Adult beginners can choose 30 or 45 minutes.) Students who can play longer pieces definitely need a little longer lesson so we get through everything.
I use Suzuki books for their inexpensive repertoire but I do not teach using the Suzuki method nor do I teach rote playing. I supplement these books with technique materials from Rick Mooney (Position Pieces, Thumb Position) and studies by cellist-composers of the past. If you have an interest in another area of playing, let's talk and find pieces that interest you.
About Brenda
I love teaching cello! I’ve spent 30+ years of my life doing it and I think I’m good at what I do. :) One of the best parts of teaching is connecting you with your dreams. I’m open to teaching music you’ll enjoy playing and I love talking about cello and my love of classical music. I’m happy to hel

I provide a fun experience of learning to play and share music. My philosophy in working with students is to curb their interests with my vision for their success with technique and musicality. I want my student to not only become good cellist, but also enjoy music on a theoretical and historical level. My overall goal is to make a connection with people that will last and music can be an outlet for growing as a person.
About Carrie
Carrie recently relocated back to Davis California from Ann Arbor Michigan where she freelanced and taught cello at schools and in her private studio. After finishing her masters at Florida State University, she has performed with the Jackson Symphony, South West Symphony Orchestra, and West Sympho

I have had just 3 lessons with Ellen thus far, and am reading sheet music like a wiz and gaining more and more confidence each lesson with my finger placement and now bowing.
Ellen has a wonderful system of teaching that truly makes everything she exposes you to stick, and has been getting me very excited to continue on knowing that I am in good hands and will progress quickly because of it. I will most definitely continue to see Ellen."
