Nothing else tingles the spine like a beautifully executed masterwork performed by an excellent flutist. I have been lucky enough to have been trained by some of the world's most renowned flute performers and teachers, and love to pass on their and my own knowledge to new generations of flute players. I will help bring out the best in every flutist, from a raw beginner, to the most advanced music major student seeking to improve their skills.

Things you can expect to learn in Flute lessons are:

Posture
Breathing Techniques
Phrasing and Musicality
Ear Training
Audition Preparation
Stage Presence and Performance
Music Theory
Music History

Ages 4 and up.
20 minute lessons are for children aged 5 and younger only, please.

About Hallie
Having grown up in a musical family with her mother a professional violinist, Hallie has been exposed to the joys of music since childhood. She learned how to play Suzuki piano at the age of three, and later percussion and string instruments from when I was six years old, and has playing and making the world more beautiful ever since, first attending Interlochen Arts Academy, then later went to Prague Conservatory and Czech Budweiss Conservatory. She has played professionally with the Prague Film Orchestra, and even more recently has been a teacher for the Flutes and Strings classes at Unison World School in Dehradun, India.

Currently Hallie is the teacher for the strings program at Sunlake Academy of Math and Science, a teacher for her own private studio based in Tampa, FL, as well as a freelance musician.

*** Lesson Details ***

My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. For students who wish to excel in their school band, a more practical approach with technique specific warm-ups and exercises seems to be the best in general.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room which includes music stands, sheet music, whiteboard, video recording equipment and microphone, and seating for parents/students. No pets. Parking in driveway. Siblings are welcome.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide metronome, and tools for minor instrument repair. Students should provide their own music stands and sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki method, Hrimaly, Taffanel et Gaubert, Patricia George

I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion
classical, jazz improvisation

Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

I hired Paul last November to help my daughter, Kara, with her middle school NYSSMA audition. Paul assessed my daughter, asking her to play a song she already knew and took notes on what she was already good at and what to improve on. When Paul taught Kara her NYSSMA solo, he was very meticulous, paid much attention to Kara's playing, and taught her techniques on how to correct certain mistakes and methods on how to improve what was already good to make her stick out. On the date of her NYSSMA audition, she was very confident, got a perfect score, and made it into the All-County Band :).
I could not recommend Paul more. His experience and methods of teaching technique especially caught my eye, and is what differentiates him from other instructors. He is very patient, kind, honest, and sits down with you to set realistic expectations and goals and how to achieve them. I still book him today for my daughter who is now in High School and has even made All-State Bands because of Paul. He may be in college, but he has music wisdom way beyond his years!!

Thank you Paul for all you do,

My daughter took lessons from Whitney for several years, and Whitney was an excellent fit for her as teacher. She provided the right balance of structure and flexibility that allowed my daughter to advance her skills and still have fun with non-Suzuki music as well. She is kind, patient, encouraging, and fun-loving. Highly recommend Whitney as a flute teacher.

I have 5 years of experience teaching flutists of all ages and abilities, but I SPECIALIZE in teaching flutists with performance anxiety! I have experienced and overcome (most of) my performance anxiety and am eager to help you turn your fears into intent!

Wanna know more about me? I am a licensed teacher by the state of Ohio and I include history, body awareness, science, and critical thinking skills in all of my lessons, making you (and your musicianship) more well-rounded as you grow through lessons! I can't wait to get in touch with you!
Morgan

About Morgan
One of the very “fun” things you get to do in life, no matter what path you choose, is make choices. The best decision I (probably) ever made presented itself to me when I was in 5th grade. You’re probably thinking *what sort of life-changing decision can a 5th grader make?* Keep reading.

I took dance lessons from 1st-4th grade and LOVED it. I was a diva, a drama queen, a performer. I could be anything I wanted to be on stage - until the day my mom took me to the high school to sit in a room full of instruments with a music teacher. It was a little scary, but I was surrounded by shiny things and I got to try all of them! I made a sound on every single instrument but by the end of the night, my heart was set on flute.

What my mom didn’t tell me was that I had to pick between music and dance! 10-year-old Me knew I would be happier with
flute after only playing one for maybe five minutes. This was more than half my life ago (omg), and here I am! #thanksmom

I took my very first flute lesson during my senior year of high school with my very first teacher, Elizabeth (Klein) Robinson, just 3 months shy of collegiate auditions (which is not something you really want to do. Start taking lessons early!) It was during my first lesson that I knew I needed to pursue music. Lindsey Goodman was my flute instructor at Marietta College and she inspired me to push myself, reach further, and to always be brave. I applied to graduate school and was graciously accepted by Dr. Kathryn Umble at Youngstown State University. I have come so far in just 6 short years and I owe so much to my teachers, mentors, family, and friends!

What does this have to do with my story, though? I realized during my undergraduate studies that there was no flute teacher of recommendable high quality in my hometown, but that high quality teacher could be me. One of my professional goals is to start a private studio for flutists of all ages.

I have degrees in both music education and flute performance and years of experience teaching beginner and intermediate flutists, so why not start up a studio now?!
