I am a double reed (oboe and bassoon) specialist and have played both for over 16 years. My instrument of choice was bassoon in college and I continue to play for community orchestras. I tutor the double reed students at Hughson High School and Ross Middle School during the school year. Proper bassoon embouchure, technique and selection and adjustment of reeds is something most public school teachers overlook. Trust a specialist!

I teach oboe primarily through the tried and true Rubank method and the Ferling studies. Students will learn how to properly care for the instrument, how to read music, music theory, instrument technique, practice techniques, ear training (how to play by ear), reed adjustment, and repertoire. I also employ custom exercises specifically for oboe to help my students progress the fastest.

Kyle is a great piano teacher! He is very patient with my 12-year old son. Just yesterday he referred to him as “fun Kyle” because he teaches him small songs on the side that he can show friends and family or are for upcoming holidays. He’s always punctual and respectful of our family and home. I’m grateful to have found him!

I'm engaged with the process of teaching bassoon students from the beginner level up to the advanced level. I make sure to make them aware of the importance of proper cleaning and care for their bassoons. I'm a patient teacher and know that everyone learns differently and at different speeds. I like to play duets with the students to make the lessons fun. I'm knowledgeable about bassoon solo pieces and orchestral repertoire and am able to help to help students prepare for solo contests. I emphasize the development of technique through slow scales and gradually expand the range. I'm able to add a little humor in the lessons to make the lessons fun. I view myself as a student in the process of teaching, too. I'm also engaged with teaching students proper embouchure, breath support and talk to them about reeds and am able to teach them reed making and adjustment as they become more advanced. In addition to bassoon I have experience playing Bb Clarinet and am able to offer ...

My daughter learned more from Joseph than her other bassoon teachers. He was reasonable and ensured that she was learning bassoon technique, not just songs. I truly appreciated his dedication to her learning and passion for the bassoon.

Taking lessons with me will begin with a conversation about your goals for taking lessons on your instrument. Your goals, plus my five years of professional teaching experience will help me craft a plan for our lessons together. I adjust around the needs of the student. So if I detect that you learn best in a certain way but our plan doesn't exactly leave room for it, we will adjust as we go until we get it right!

He is a well trained musician with a lot of patience, which for our lessons went a long way. He is quick to help you find the right correction to technique, and will always cater to your personal needs. His lessons work well even online, as he is able to succinctly verbalize what and how something to be worked on. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

Carl Gardner is an A1 bassoonist. Over the past year and few months he’s improved everything about my playing, technically and musically, and helped me achieve goals I previously thought were impossible. His reeds are immaculate! 5/5 stars would recommend him to any bassoonist I meet.
Amy
Social distancing will not interfere with solo competition! Carl made certain that my daughter did not miss a lesson by proactively finding a way to have one online. Although she prefers to be taught in person, this has definitely allayed her fears of not having her solo polished and ready for competition!

"Alyssa is an excellent teacher who always goes the extra mile to make sure my daughter gets the most from her lesson. Her youthful energy makes her very relatable and her knowledge of the bassoon is something we struggled to find in our area. I feel like we’ve found the perfect teacher!

We all love taking online lessons! It saves us an hour and a half in the car, and it’s simply more comfortable to be in our own home. I’ve ben recommending Take Lessons to all my friends."

"My daughter has been taking lessons with Cassandra for 7 years. She is knowledgeable, kind, caring, and compassionate. She dedicates herself to her students and goes above and beyond to create educational experiences both in and outside the classroom. Her prices are very reasonable and she devotes extra time and energy to ensure all the tools needed for success with a double reed instrument are in place. She works well with beginning elementary students all the way through to college students auditioning for elite music studios. She is well connected in the bassoon community. It would be impossible to find a better instructor. My daughter will miss her when she is away in college."

"Galina has been working with our 8th grade son on bassoon for a year and he loves it! She is a kind, generous, and knowledgeable teacher. She has patiently prepared him for auditions, improving his technique and musicality, but she also makes lessons fun by playing duets with him. She is also teaching him to make reeds. And she is very easy to work with in scheduling, and has seamlessly moved to remote lessons in the current situation. We are lucky to have found her as a teacher."

"My son had his first lesson today and really enjoyed it. I sat and watched and thought that the instructor was very patient and you could hear it in his voice and general mannerisms. He gave my son some great tips for memorizing his fingering and gave him a homework assignment to work on until our next lesson. My son decided to transition from the trombone to bassoon before the new school year starts and these private lessons are just the head start he will need before day 1 of school."
