Some people are afraid of music theory, they think it is a bad word. However, all my instrumental students learn music theory. There is nothing to fear. Music theory is foundational, as important as learning scales and chords. It is necessary to know to play at a high level. In classical music it is an interpretive tool, in jazz it is a tool for improvising. Like note reading, it opens up entire worlds for us to explore. It is FUN!

I teach theory, composition, and improvisation to students of all instruments, even instruments I do not play. I love working with violinists, vocalists, even dulcimer players. I am also available to tutor those who are prepping for high school and college.

My basic chord function theory course is twelve lessons / assignments. With that information students have the knowledge to progress to analytical and improvisational concepts. With some time and effort, everyone I've taught has learned it happily and easily.

About Phillip

I teach music. The guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele just happen to be the particular instruments I choose. Music as a language, discipline, and art, is the goal. I've been teaching, performing, studying, composing, for some thirty years. I've studied and gigged in the classical, jazz, rock, blu

Phil is a consummate musician and is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He helped me to arrange several songs and encouraged me to write my own arrangements, as that really helps one better understand the instrument. I loved our lessons on learning all the scales and modes, too.

Phillips teaching is very low key and suttle but very effective. I am astounded at how much he has taught me in a few weeks.

I like to incorporate music theory into all of my music lessons to help students understand how the music was written, and why the composer chose to write the piece. I will help you expand your view of music, and provide the right guidance to compose your own pieces!

About Jenny

Music Jenny comes from a very musical family and started piano when she was five years old. She grew up constantly listening to her father practicing his guitar and brother practicing violin. Since then, her accomplishments include an Honorable Mention at the Korea Times Youth Music Competition. Sh

Working with Jenny has been a great experience.

She has a wealth of knowledge in music. She was raised around music so it comes as second nature to her. Her experience definitely shows from theory to technique, structure to general perspective.

Jen's wide-ranging experience allows her to accommodate different learning styles. Even when I was unsure of which methods were most suitable for me, she was able to determine an appropriate approach. Each lesson is tailored around your preference while still maintaining steady progress towards your goals.

She's flexible, patient, communicative, and fun to work with. Her versatility has made learning piano so much easier and more exciting for me than before. I'm always looking forward to each session. I've also been able to learn about other aspects of music, as she isn't limited to piano; she's knowledgeable of other instruments and teaches dance as well.

One of my favorite things about Jen is that, even though she's easy to work with, she ensures that I've truly grasped one concept before moving to the next. It's also always great to see her play (:

Highly recommended

I have a 100% rate of getting my students into their school of choice as of yet. Although I don't guarantee it, I will work relentlessly to make sure you are well prepared though. I will also lend you PDFs of books to help you save a buck.

About Scott

I have been playing drums and percussion since the ripe old age of 9, in 4th grade. Originally wanting to play the clarinet, my music teacher thought my sense of rhythm was too good to waste and placed me in the drum section. I was the only kid who didn't want to play drums. "We hired Brian to work with our barely 3 year old to play the drums we got him for his birthday. He loves it! We don’t have any grand aspirations for him, but he likes to bang around and we wanted to give him some direction to see if he latched on to it. Our main objective is that he has fun. Brian is GREAT with him and he looks forward to it every week. 10/10!"

"Emily has a strong commitment to making sure her students are learning about music while continuing to enjoy what music can bring to their lives. She not only taught me how to read, listen to, and study music, but she taught me why music is important and how I can live it. Emily teaches with grace and poise. She finds a way to relate to students of any ambition or experience. As a high school student looking to still be involved in music in college, Emily was able to find connections in several cities for me because of her numerous experiences of networking in the music world. She has a broad range of musical talents and has the ability to immediately connect with her students. Emily has not only been a great teacher for me, but a great friend."

"I started taking guitar lessons for the first time 10 months ago and am thankful I found such a great teacher in Ahmad. His positive attitude and love of music helps me stay engaged and lessons are productive and fun.

One of the great things about Ahmad is he listens to you and adjusts lesson content based on the feedback you provide. His ability to listen allows Ahmad to deliver a personalized lesson plan that incorporates your goals and gets you excited about what you are working on.

Ahmad also has taught me techniques to prevent and address minor aches that come up while learning to play. He takes this seriously and shows you how to prevent and resolve any issues that come up.

Overall, taking lessons from Ahmad has been a very positive experience. I look forward to continuing working with him to get better."

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
