Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study bass! Upright bass is the cornerstone of my passion for music -- it is such a beautiful instrument and I love to help people find their unique personality on the bass. A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I am well-versed in tried-and-true methods of establishing healthy technique, good tone, good time, and musicality on the bass. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). In other words, we can work together on whatever music really lights you up, no matter the style! Whether you are just beginning or are already advanced, there's so much we can do ...

About Hannah

I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music, where I focused especially on Afro-Cuban music, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne Wallace! My jazz background also gave me rigorous training in music theory and history. My performance career is high

At first I was skeptical about taking online lessons, but I love taking lessons with Hannah. I'm a classical bassist starting to learn jazz, and Hannah is providing exactly what I was hoping for in starting my jazz career. The first lesson we went over what my goals are, and she is providing me with exactly the tools that I need to progress. Every week she sends me a personalized document of what we went over in lessons, what I should focus on in the coming week, and music resources (exercises, jazz charts, etc) to utilize! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable in both technique and theory, and pushes me every lesson.
Cara Bidwell
I cannot believe how much I've learned in just 3 lessons with Hannah! She is an excellent teacher, patient, encouraging, and clear. She quickly assessed what I was looking for in upright bass lessons and the lessons are exactly what I was hoping for, and more. I'm so glad to have found Hannah.

My primary goal with all of my students is to help them make great music that is true to themselves. I also try to stick with a sound-before-symbol approach to learning music. What this means for my teaching is a focus on training both the ears and technique. I always prefer a more personalized approach to teaching, working with students to find repertoire that speaks to them and improves their musicality and technique.

About Isaac

As I’ve developed my teaching style over the last ten years, I’ve found myself zeroing in on a few key qualities I want to cultivate in my students and in my self. These include great ears, a high proficiency on the instrument, and a strong and interactive sense of musicality. At the center of my p

Isaac knows his stuff. He has been great in teaching music theory and piano. Easy to get in contact with and flexible in scheduling.
Greg A.
Isaac is an excellent teacher and is highly recommended. His method is not centered on drills, music reading or repetition, but rather on getting an understanding of how the notes, chords work together. In so doing, the student gets a great understanding of theory and it opens the door to improvisation. In addition he's very patient with folks such as myself who don't come to class with a deep understanding of music theory.
Victoria Danberg
I have just begun lessons with Isaac. He is an excellent teacher; attuned to my needs, very good at explaining things, patient, very good at getting me to understand what I need to know. I look forward to learning upright bass with him!

My number one priority is for you to have a great time playing upright bass. That means developing strong technique that makes playing easier, learning how to make practice fun and effective, and exploring the music that interests you most. I’ve been playing and loving bass for 20 years and am currently studying music education at the University of Maryland.

About Madison

I started playing bass through my school orchestra program at age 9, and I’ve adored classical music ever since. That’s my main focus, but I also dabble in rock, jazz, blues, and bluegrass, sometimes on other instruments (electric bass, guitar, violin, and cello). I was self-taught for many years,

"Brian first and foremost is a fantastic bassist. I heard live at a local club and asked if he gave lessons. Fortunately he did and I started studying with him soon thereafter. I was a beginner/ intermediate player at the time and over the course of the next two years not only did my playing greatly improve so did my knowledge of music theory. Brian has been a wonderful source of information. I couldn't ask for someone better. I still get an occasion lesson in with him and he reminds me how much there still is to learn. I highly recommend Brian for anyone interested in learning the upright bass or, as was the case with me, someone with the basics who wants to get better."
