Matthew C.

Los Angeles, CA

My goal is for every student to experience the same magic I felt when I first picked up a trumpet 25 years ago (and I still feel today). Learning an instrument is an incredibly exciting journey. But, it will only be rewarding if you have the right instructor to teach you and coach you along the way.

Truth be told, it wasn't until my third try as a child that I found the teacher who was perfect for me. My first teacher was too much of a drill sergeant. The second teacher talked more about sports than the trumpet. Now, with every lesson I teach, I strive more and more to be like my third teacher. He constantly encouraged me, motivated me, and challenged me to be the best trumpet player I could be.

Under my instruction, each student goes at his or her own pace and receives a very holistic perspective of music. Difficult concepts are approached with creative, easy-to-follow explanations. And, I frequently create custom exercises such that students may more easily work through their ...

About Matthew

My first passion always has and always will be music. But, just a fraction of an inch behind that is my passion for teaching. I have always believed not only that everyone has the ability to learn an instrument, but that everyone should absolutely give it a try.

The process of learning music expands the mind, instills discipline, evokes creativity, and is even shown to reduce stress.

But, unfortunately, many who try fail. Most do because they simply don't ask for help and some do because their teacher fails to provide the kind of help they need for success.

The truth is that whether y
ou wish to play for your own personal enjoyment or you wish to master your instrument, one of the biggest keys to your success will be finding a teacher who will meet you at your level and challenge you to reach your potential.

My flexible teaching philosophy involves learning what is best for you as a student and adopting or constructing the learning method that will best prepare you for success.

Whoever you are and whatever you hope to accomplish by learning an instrument, you have found the right teacher.

Just fill out the quick form in the upper right to book the first group of lessons or scroll to the top and click "Ask a question" to learn more.

I look forward to helping you to become the musician you are meant to be!

My son has been receiving trumpet lessons from Matthew for 6 years beginning at age 4. My son was inspired to play the trumpet by the movie the Princess and the Frog. I shopped around for awhile. Matthew was and is the right fit for my son! He is very knowledgeable, caring, and insightful. My son is talented but practicing is not his favorite treat. Matthew is very patient and teaching him via a holistic approach. He is also flexible with scheduling. We look forward to seeing him every week! I high recommend Matthew Cline!!

Matthew M.

Long Beach, CA

I have been playing trumpet since the 4th grade, about 20 years now. I received my Bachelor in Trumpet Performance from the Peabody Conservatory and my Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State Long Beach. I have performed all over the United States and abroad and have performed a wide range of musical styles in a variety of musical settings; from classical solos, to contemporary chamber orchestras, to big bands, to top 40's wedding casual bands, to reggae, ska, rock, Latin, Persian, and more still. Whether you just want to learn a bugle call for boy scouts or want to prepare for an audition, competition, or recital, I will provide a comprehensive learning experience for the trumpet. I could take you from a beginner to playing for a living if you would like.

About Matthew

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orc
hestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material, and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you can be guaranteed we'll make steady progress and we will achieve your goals. Get ready to wow your friends and family!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Metronome
Post-it Notes
Music Stand(s)
Chairs
Computer/Internet
Keyboard
Guitar(s)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.

I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

For instruments outside the trumpet, methods will address school curriculum, unless student has advanced beyond provided materials.

I strongly encourage students of voice, guitar, and piano to pick material of their choosing.

Classical and rock are the genres to which I am most attracted

Vocal Lessons

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

Thomas K.

Glendale, CA

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

An instrumentalist since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning trumpet lessons.

About Thomas

A Los Angeles-based composer, orchestrator, conductor, and educator, Thomas has earned a reputation as a reliable and effective music instructor. Thomas instructs students in piano, woodwinds, trumpet, music theory, and composition. He has led multiple after-school classes and private lessons (both online and in-person) for instrumentalists as an official teacher for Piano Keys 4 Kids, MusIQ Club, Music Teachers Network, and Music Lessons on Wheels. He has received praise over his varied and individual approaches to teaching that focus on realizing the full potential of his students, whom rang
e from kindergarteners to adults.

Thomas served as the arranger and orchestrator for the full-length stage musical Way Back When. His film credits include independent films HeartFelt, Return of the Dragon Sword, A Sense of Sound, and Disregarded, as well as the award-winning documentary GeoFORCE: A Journey to Understanding. He also provides original music to dancers. He has received commissions for concert music by the American Festival Pops Orchestra, Brigham Young University–Idaho concert band, Jazz 4 Justice, and the LDS Church. He has produced three concerts of his original music, including Emerge & Ascend, a benefit concert that raised $1,500. He has also acted as conductor in a number of studio recording sessions.

Thomas received his Masters of Music in Film Scoring from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in Seattle, Washington where he studied with two-time Emmy winning film and television composer Hummie Mann. He received his Bachelor of Music in Composition from George Mason University where he studied composition under band composer Mark Camphouse and electronic composer Jesse Guessford, and conducting under Anthony Maiello. In the area of performance, he has studied saxophone under Rick Parrell (U.S. Army Band), Tyler Kuebler (USAF Airmen of Note), and Sandon Mayhew; and piano with John Healey and Danny Beal.

Originally from Boise, Idaho, Thomas currently resides in Los Angeles. A melodious and colorful composer, he hopes to continue bringing evocative, contemporary music to audiences everywhere.
