Manda S.

Boston, MA

About Manda

As a graduate of the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and Boston University Metropolitan College, Manda has obtained a diverse education in performance and performing arts management. As a clarinetist, Manda has performed in Illinois, Alabama, Ohio, and Massachusettes as a soloist, chamber musician, and in large ensembles. Her performances have been well received for their diverse programming and superior musicianship and technique.

Manda began teaching clarinet and piano in 2008 while she was still in high school. She began with beginning and intermediate musicians and quickly received the op
portunity to coach advanced players at one of Illinois' top high school band programs. While studying in Ohio, she began teaching clarinet and piano at the Joyful Noise Neighborhood Music School. There she continued to have one of the largest studio classes of both instruments for two years. Currently, Manda continues teaching in Boston, MA through Takelessons and Musika as well as through her own personal network.

Outside of her performances and teaching, Manda has held positions as a fundraiser and administrator at the Verb Ballet company in Ohio, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in Massachusettes, the Brooke Charter Schools in Massachusettes, as well as the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Using her skills learned in these positions, as well as from working with mentor Dr. David Cutler, Manda uses an entrepreneurial and logistical mind set when running Manda's Music. You will be met with a professional atmosphere and efficently run lessons and administration.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect to have their at-home-work as well as practice techniques written out in a journal for their reference every week. We will begin working slowly so the student and I feel comfortable with each other, as well as with the instrument. Each student is different, so there is no timeline that is set to work from. We work at a pace that is comfortable yet continuously challenging for the student. Over all, Manda works to acheive her goal for students to gain an appreciation for music, and look forward to coming to lessons each week.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The lesson spaces include stands, pianos, and chairs.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide pens, pencils, metronome, tuner, and small repair equipment. I expect students to bring their instrument (for clarinet only), assigned music, assignment journal, and specified instrument equipment (i.e. reeds, swab, cork grease, etc).

*** Specialties ***
Classical music, popular music, and beginning jazz.

I am in my mid-20s, and I just started to learn piano. I do have an experience of learning piano as a little kid, but it wasn't fun. It was tedious, non-inspiring, and simply boring. Since I slowly developed interest in classical music as I grew up, learning to play piano is one thing I wanted to do for quite a long time.

Nevertheless, I had plenty of anxiety starting something new as an adult. Aside of that, I don't own a piano, and most of the lessons seemed to be dedicated to children.

As a new year's resolution, I determined to find a way to learn. Then I found 'takelessons', which makes paying for and scheduling/rescheduling lessons an easy task. Subsequently I found Manda, who had excellent qualifications and credentials, along with near-perfect reviews.

Now I am very happy that I started and I feel extremely lucky to have Manda as my first-as-a-grownup teacher. She is very knowledgeable and forgiving. These qualities of her makes learning piano very interesting, which is often not the case since inevitably a lot of repetition follows with learning.

What used to be an awful Monday, which most grownups would agree on, transformed to an exciting time to explore a part of the world I haven't exposed to that much. Juggling work and practice isn't so bad as I thought so far. I look forward to keep learning from Manda, to accomplish my goal of playing piano pieces that I love listening to.

About Ricky

Hey guys, my name is Ricky and I'm a three-finger five-string banjoist and bluegrass guitarist from the San Francisco Bay Area. I moved to Boston to study banjo at the Berklee College of music and what an experience it has been! I'd love to show you what I've learned under the teachers at the college.

*** Lesson Details ***
What I like to do in my lessons is make a division between the different styles of banjo playing. These styles can be divided into three fundamentals: Scruggs style, Melodic style, and single string style. We will learn songs that highlight each style individually. The goa
l of the first lesson is to get you playing bluegrass banjo! The goal of the first set of lessons is to equip you with a couple of bluegrass standards. We will then move onto more difficult fiddle tunes and could even delve into classical style playing and improvisation.

For guitar we will discuss basic right hand technique, playing out of basic left hand positions, and rhythm playing. We'll learn standard bluegrass tunes and move on from there.

In the meantime, I've got plenty of practice work on my hand that I am looking forward to digging into. Ricky has exceeded my expectations for a first lesson!

Really chill guy. He accommodated to my abilities and made the lessons fun. He also pushed me to practice a lot, which wasn't hard to do because it's fun! We ended up starting almost every lesson with talking about a new passion like a certain kind of musical sound we don't hear every day or a fun motivational speaker or a new band, etc. Be prepared to be called "dude" and "man," along with a general relaxed and fun hour.

Ricky has been a wonderful teacher! I learned so much from him in our time together but I had to move so I was not able to continue. Ricky is such a patient and creative teacher which really helps with each lesson. If I could sneak in a 6th star on this review I would! Thank you so much Ricky!

I've been really enjoying my lessons with Dor. He makes each lesson fun and informative by not just going over rudiments but also getting me onto the drum kit to play songs I love. He has a great eye for detail and gives helpful constructive feedback. If you're serious about learning drums, Dor is definitely the right man for the job!

Kristen B.

Boston, MA

About Kristen

I want to dispel the myth that only a select few are "gifted" with beautiful voices. Singing is like a sport; it is a skill requiring refined muscular coordination, which anyone can improve with practice and focused instruction.

My teaching experience encompasses students of all ages and abilities. My specialty is in classical voice, with a focus in opera and art song. I get a deep feeling of satisfaction from watching my students achieve their personal singing goals, and have sent many on to receive top ratings at vocal competitions and college music scholarships.

*** Lesson Detai
ls ***
My students describe me as "strict but nice". I encourage my students to set their expectations high, and then provide the tools to reach those goals over time. I love to work with musicians of all levels, as long as they are curious and committed to a "work hard/play hard" philosophy.

Repertoire will vary depending on your musical background and your interests and goals. I am comfortable teaching and performing folk song, art songs in German, French and Italian, and operatic arias. We will choose music together to find pieces that will aid your vocal development and that you enjoy singing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, music stands, rehearsal rooms, seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
My focus of my undergraduate and Master's studies was in operatic vocal performance. I also have experience with choral and vocal jazz.

Excellent ability to teach the new or accomplished vocalist.

Kristen is wonderful, she is able to make her instructions understandable to the beginner and inspire him to try new things. It's refreshing to see my young son focusing his style with a beautiful classical edge.

Paulo L.

Boston, MA

About Paulo

I'm a professional guitar player, an Opera Singer and also an experienced and supportive teacher. I will meet your personal goals choosing the right method for your own pace and focus on helping you to develop your artistry. If you want to know more about me just visit paulolapa.com

*******************************************************************************

GUITAR: I have a ten year experience career teaching guitar - privately and throughout official schools - to students of all ages, from curious toddlers to contemplative seniors. Prior to move to the United States, I taught at A
MVP Musical Academy (Portugal) where I also got my conservatory degree in Guitar performance. Relying on a fundamental classic technique I can guide you through every musical genre that you wish to approach and enlighten you with the best musical foundation that there is. Whether you want to learn a specific song/repertoire or you want me to guide you trough the keystones of this instrument I will always lookout for your personal satisfaction and development in the process.

I'm a recorded artist with two albums as a member of the AMVP Guitar Orchestra: Contrastes (2003) and Plaisir (2005) and appeared at prestigious venues in Portugal, Saint Peterburg (Russia), Paris (France) and Frankfurt (Germany).

SINGING: My voice studio teaches singers from beginner to advanced levels who are eager to properly use their own voice, master the fundamental notions of a healthy singing technique and how to potentiate themselves as individual artists. If you're preparing for an audition or are just curious about what you can do with your voice, I'll be glad to help you. The process that allowed me to become a professional Opera singer gave me the clear notion that as a student you want to have the balance between clear and accurate concepts and a positive experience.

Because singing was always a passion in my life I also pursued my advanced studies in Classical Voice, and as a result I graduated from Aveiro University (Portugal) in Music and Vocal Performance. My goal as a voice teacher is to help you understand the basic fundamentals of a healthy singing voice: breathing technique, clarity of tone, balance between natural resonators and clear diction - regardless of what genre you're singing. I can also assist you in the proper diction of the romantic languages (Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese).

After completing my studies in Portugal, I moved to Boston where I developed a relationship with the VOICExperience Foundation and the Savannah Voice Festival led by the great Opera legend Sherrill Milnes. While in the United States, I have performed in musical concerts, opera and musical scenes, private performances and outreach events in Savannah, Georgia, New York City, Tampa Bay, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In Savannah I've been working regularly - throughout a series of Masterclasses - with a group of teenagers from Bethesda Academy introducing them to the Opera world and showing how to use their own voice and body as a way to fully express themselves.
