Guitar Lessons in Houston: More than Just Strings

By Andrew D. - Houston Guitar Teacher

Have you ever wished that you had a secret world -one that you could retreat to any time you desired? A world that you alone could shape and, each time you returned, remained completely untouched by any hand other than your own? That world exists, and not in some distant galaxy or in the dreams of those deep in sleep (although they may exist there as well). That world exists in music; more specifically, that world exists when you dive into the world of learning to play music and musical instruments. Learning, growing, changing, and moving with music as it moves with you. When you take guitar lessons in Houston, all of these things are possible.

This is the reason I love to teach guitar lessons in Houston. To be able to share MY world that I have been building for so long is just such a powerful thing. Once you jump off that cliff into the open air that is the musical realm, you never stop falling deeper and deeper into it. It is truly something that stays with you for a lifetime. There is nothing I enjoy more than bringing somebody new to that cliff and showing them what lies beyond. It’s such a tremendous feeling when I see the look of understanding and excitement on a student’s face when comprehension washes over them, and then to see them turn around and use that new tool to shape their musical mind.

So awaken YOUR musical mind - take the plunge and begin to shape your world. Sign up for guitar lessons in Houston today!

Acoustic guitar

About Octavio

I have been teaching voice for 7 years and my beginner students are already singing their own gigs. I have had only one advanced student in singing and in 2010 he got the zarzuela prize in the most prestigious opera competition in the world "Placido Domingo´s Operalia). I can teach in Spanish, English and Italian. and for voice I specialize in opera and mariachi music. In guitar as well as in Piano I only teach beginners.

*** Lesson Details ***
For voice I only take students from 15 years old and on. This is only because the children's voice is very delicate and I think it requires a teac
her who specializes in children for it is a big responsibility. Once the puberty voice change is gone: this is my field of expertise. with great discipline and a huge desire of success, a student could be singing in less than 6 months in a proper, healthy and beautiful way.

For guitar and for Piano, since it is for beginners, is very simple and fast, and as well as singing, if you do your homework, then the achievements will come faster than you think!!!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I need from students to provide a piano or a keyboard for voice Lessons and for Piano lessons. I would provide the music to be copied, or they can buy their own music. For guitar they have to have a classical guitar and I would bring mine so that we both can use a guitar.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in opera (for voice), but it is adaptable to any kind of singing. In guitar and Piano is only for beginners.

ATTENTION: I DO NOT TAKE CHILDREN FOR VOICE LESSONS!!!

I was nervous when I first started my lessons, starting at my age, but Octavio made me feel comfortable and confident. He was very businesslike, and treated me like a professional, instead of just a student. I enjoyed every minute of my lessons, and would definitely recommend Octavio as a teacher.

Mr. Octavio knows how to motivate a child. My son gets easily distracted with telling stories, etc and Mr. Octavio is able to get him to focus so well. He has an excellent combination of firmness with motivation. Plus he really knows how to get my 8 year old to understand lessons. Highly recommend!

About Harold

I love teaching, and strive to ensure that each student meets his/her personal goals.

My lesson environment is relaxed; I feel that if the student cannot
get a little fun out of it, something is missing. I do, however, expect
my students to practice and to pay attention.

I enjoy teaching beginners, particularly young (8-15 year olds)
children/teens. A beginner has no bad habits which need to be broken.

Adults and experienced players are also welcome. I have particular
expertise in jazz harmony, theory & improvisation. I teach the
Lydian Chromatic Concept, among oth
er improvisational methodologies.

Experience:
1975-1978
Berklee College of Music, Boston MA
Majored in composition & arranging.
Studies with Russ DiFilipis and Bill Bresnahan. Ensembles with Gary Burton, Pat Metheny & Mick Goodrick, to name a few.

1979-1981
Houston Baptist University
Majored in composition
Wrote my first complete symphonic work.
Studied with Dr. Robert Linder.

1982-1984
University of Houston
Additional music history & advanced theory study with Dr. Robert Nelson

*** Lesson Details ***
Focus on proper technique for all students, regardless of his/her
playing ability. Once proper technique is established, I utilize the
Berklee Series as a basis for instruction. These volumes are
supplemented by exercises, which I write specifically for the
particular student's needs. As the student progresses, I incorporate
tunes that the student wishes to learn into the lesson plan.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument and teaching materials/accessories.
The student provides his/her own instrument

Patient and very encouraging

Harold from day one has been great. He understands the difficulties in learning to play a music instrument. He gives you enough material to practice and master before the next lesson and makes you accountable for it. So great balance for a teacher that actually cares for his students. Not to much but enough that you see progress in learning how to play the guitar.

Rachel H.

Houston, TX

The Guitar is my first love. I customize every lesson for every individual student that I have, and base the heart of each lesson off of the infatuation I have for my six-stringed side kick. I love to use the guitar as a tool to expand my students creativity. My students learn to listen and appreciate a broad variety of styles and experience the full music spectrum.
Lessons will cover scales, theory, chords, jazz and blues progression as well as Crafting your tone for your amplifier, finger picking and performance techniques.

About Rachel

I started my musical path in a Ballet Studio. I fell in love with the crackle of the vinyl record playing as I learned to listen and dance with the rhythm.

I started playing the guitar when I was nine and took classical lessons until I was seventeen.I really enjoy the art of practice and the journey of patience. The process of learning has helped me carve out and cultivate my style of music. It's opened up a lot of doors for me in my life. I've had the honor to play with a lot of great performers and have been lucky enough to tour the U.S. and Canada with festivals and showcases such as V
ans Warped Tour, South By Southwest and the Halifax Pop Explosion.I've been the opening act for Carolyn Wonderland, Maria Taylor, Tsunami Bomb, Tilly and the Wall, Basia Bulat, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere. Anathallo, Cursive, Milton Hopkins, and Pony Up.

When I have free time I volunteer with the Houston Chapter of Girls Rock Camp to help teach girls empowerment through songwriting and music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I began teaching as an afterschool job when I was 16. I was homeschooled so I feel that the experience taught me that everyone learns differently and that there is not just one standardized method to playing music.

My Teaching style varies with each student, but the one constant is my ability to make each and every client I encounter completely fall in LOVE with music. It's my super power. Lesson plans are tailored for your specific needs and to help you achieve your musical goals and aspirations at your desired pace. I enjoy my students and making music with them.

Here is an overview of the lessons that I provide.

Guitar:
Finger Picking, Song Writing, Rhythm, Lead, Scales,Modes & Ear Training.

Songwriting and composition: Learn techniques, how to brain storm and plot your musical story line. This class pairs great with vocal lessons or guitar lessons.

About Jagdeep

Hi my name is Jay and I've been passionate about music for most of my life. I started learning the tabla at age 7. I moved on to learning guitar, gaining mastery in various styles including classical, flamenco, brazilian, folk, rock, jazz, pop, and indian. I love arranging music, and love performing, teaching and continuously growing as a musician. I also play the sitar, and keyboard as well. I can play both western music and indian raga's. Musically speaking, I am a mix of both worlds and that can be heard in my music and improvisational style.

Professionally, I was Former Director
at Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts. I also use to teach guitar at Back Beat City Center for the Performing Arts. Currently I am a member of Energy Corridor of Houston (ECHO) Orchestra, and play classical guitar with the orchestra. I have been dedicated to student development and growth for 15 years. I have 15 years experience teach guitar.

Learned a lot in 30 minutes. He broke down music theory to very fundamental, easy to understand components. I have met different guitar instructors in the past but haven't learned and understood as much compared to what I learned from him in half an hour.
