Charles S.

Waldorf, MD

I'm a music teacher in DC and also case manage special needs students.

About Charles

Outside of teaching percussion and musical performances I have worked in special education for over 15 years.

My life of music started knee high at the age of 4 playing drums and piano. At the age of 15 I gave my first musical performance, from that stage on I knew my talent had found a home.

In the 11th grade I toured with a local funk group in Washington DC through 26 cities learning music and the life of travel at an early age. During my last high school and college years I performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and with local
rap artist.

Recording credits and highlights include work with Def Jam artist Steady Eddy, recording go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock, and recordings with Little Benny and the Masters.

My other musical passion is teaching. Throughout my college years and beyond I served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. As part of the Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine I served as a instructional leader in music and performance mentor for the team. I taught part time as a percussion instructor at Milford Mill High School giving individual lessons for over 10 years.

Musical inspiration is an important element to the refinement of my craft. A few personal musical influences are Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Neil Peart (Rush), Dennis Chambers, (Santana), George Gray (Roberta Flack), Ricky Wellman (Miles Davis), Quinton Mack-Davis (Rare Essence) and Michael Bland (Prince).

My son's reaction after one lesson: Charles is awesome!
I whole-heartedly agree! He jumped right in, asked some great questions and quickly deduced Jonathan's skill level.
He was able to give him something tough enough to really challenge Jonathan, but still within his range to be able to do..

Great!

Travis P.

Cheltenham, MD

About Travis

Hi,

My name is Travis, and I have been playing trumpet for 17 years. I have been teaching for 8. I love working with new students, and became more focused on private lessons during my Sophomore year in college. Speaking of which, I earned a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet performance from the University of Maryland College Park.

While there, I played with the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Band. I am also a regular performer with the Prince Georges Phil Harmonic.

As each student is different, so is my technique and teaching method. Generally, I have students work
through the fundamentals of the instrument including fingerings, embouchure, breathing, and scales. Once mastered, the more difficult obstacles such as repertoire, range, dexterity and endurance are approached. I do not work with a set schedule for students, and tailor the lesson plan for the student's growth and practice.

A wonderful instructor for my 6 year old daughter. I appreciate how he mixes theory and truly teaching her what she is playing and why she is playing it a certain way, with fun and enjoying playing the piano. I can see that she is getting a lot out of the lessons. I would highly recommend Travis for these types of lessons.

Christine P.

Alexandria, VA

I specialize in reading skills and establishing exceptional foundations in beginners.

Focus will be set on fundamentals in reading, music theory, counting, interpretation, technique and reasoning.

I teach students how to simplify music, even students who have struggled significantly in the past with their reading comprehension.

I have developed a very clear and unique methodology that leads to student success and further gain in musical independence.

I teach in the traditional route, which can lead into other styles by understanding music theory.

I work with many client's with impairments that have found success in my methods. Please ask me how if you have any questions.

Piano begins at age 5.

About Christine

Christine is a professional vocal coach and piano instructor who resides in the Alexandria area.

She has over six years of teaching experience and has taught hundreds of students during that time (both vocal and piano throughout the dmv area). She is considered an expert in her field and maintains a very active studio.

Christine's unique approach to voice has allowed her to continue to help beginning to expert level students advance their technique with incredible results.

She specializes in vocal intonation. Her methodology in intonation is unmatched by any other approach. Her methods in
vocal intonation translate directly and indirectly into all styles of legitimate singing. Students will learn the full potential of their instrument under her guidance.

She offers voice lessons that are based on the continuous assessment of the student's individual voice type and unique vocal needs. Her style of teaching is a total immersion manner of teaching.

Her goal is for her vocal students to discover their authentic voice and find freedom in their technique as vocalist and most importantly their expression as artist.

Christine is also a highly sought out piano instructor for her ability to establish an exceptional foundation in beginning piano students. She teaches Russian technique, which allows for flexibility, strength, and beauty of musical lines on piano. This technique can be applied to all styles of music for piano and is not limited to the classical style.

Her goal is for all of her music students to become increasingly independent as musicians to where they feel confident to teach themselves and others and to ultimately find enjoyment in the process of learning music.

Her approach helps students advance their technique, reading proficiency, including music theory and expand their artistic capabilities.

She received her music education in classical vocal performance from George Mason University and has continued her studies with Mrs. Fabiana Bravo.

Christine also has an international recording career as an adult contemporary artist.

Bio:
First and foremost thank you for taking the time to view my profile and I look forward to helping you work toward your musical aspirations.

Professional recording artist signed with label based in Nashville. Has two U.S. Billboards on the indicators chart (2014 summer/fall release) in the popular adult contemporary genre.

In addition to U.S. charts, she is also playing in the U.K. Most recently releasing her 2nd official single in the U.K. on June 1, 2016 titled "If that's love".

Education:
Received music education from George Mason University in classical vocal performance.

I have continued my vocal studies with the incomparable Fabiana Bravo, who studied under the greatest Italian tenor of this past century, Luciano Pavarotti and the legendary Renata Scotto.

From Christine's teachings I have learned the authentic Italian tradition of Bel canto and Verismo in opera. This differs from the American interpretation of the art.

Voice type:
I am a true dramatic soprano. I sit between mezzo and soprano. Having a rare and large instrument has given me invaluable insight and a wider perspective on all other voice types.

Specialization:
I specialize in the intonation of the voice. Students learn specific vocal techniques and how to properly approach the voice in a natural and relaxed manner.

From doing such, students will be able to create appropriate colors for their instrument to then genuinely achieve different styles of music.

Exercises will also encourage range, breath support that maintains a relaxed and low larynx, placement, dynamics, proper resonance, breath direction, blending of registers and most importantly flexibility in order to sing with freedom and in your authentic voice.

The technique will never lose sight of the integrity and authenticity of the voice. It in fact enhances and supports this concept. Singers will learn how to hear their true voice in a way that they have yet to experience fully.

We will have very clear and relevant discussions on how the voice works. This is absolutely vital to finding true success in your studies. It should be noted that one cannot learn without comprehension first.

More importantly from our discussions, the voice will no longer feel like such a mystery.

My approach will help solidify things you continue to struggle with. I have had many, many students agree and come to this conclusion.

This especially includes students who have already studied voice seriously, but are struggling to grasp concepts and or technique.

More times than not, it is the instruction you have received that is inaccurate and ineffective for your voice.

General vocal styles I teach:
Jazz (any variation such as blues), popular adult contemporary (such as ballades, singer song-writer, R&B) musical theatre, classical, opera (bel canto and verismo) traditional, hymnal, sacred, country, and any variation of these styles.

Listed are the styles I coach. Students will find improvement in all styles across the board, even indirectly because it is not simply about singing exclusively in one style versus another. Instead we are learning to use the voice efficiently and effectively and this will translate into any singing genre.

What to expect during lessons:

Voice:
My teachings are based on first the individual assessment of the student's structure and voice type, much like the true Italian style. Students will develop their technique through clearly directed vocal exercises and put this into practice through their musical rep.

Beyond this objective we will cover other artistic and technical aspects including interpretation, diction, phrasing, timing, and performance.

We will also discuss the mentality of singing. This unique approach that I have developed helps students learn their instrument immensely better than without it.

Voice lessons should be on a weekly basis to gain consistency and to maintain the student's time slot on the schedule.

Piano:
Lessons are highly progressive and structured based on each student's individual learning needs.

I teach piano in the European (Russian) route.

I specialize in proper reading skills and developing healthy efficient technique. Students learn to use strategies to sight read music on their own and develop interpretive skills.

I have developed a method of teaching that helps students systematically identify pitches and counting with accuracy.

Music theory is heavily emphasized during lessons and necessary to support the study of piano.

We will also work on interpretive skills based on historical context and artistic development. I teach students how to think about music critically and thus create dialogue with the music.

Piano lessons should be on a weekly basis to gain consistency and to maintain the student's time slot on the schedule.

Mission:
My goal is to help students become increasingly independent as musicians. I have worked with many children with disabilities as well. Please ask me how.

Who I am:
I love music, I love life, I love my family, I love my dogs, I love my coffee and I love to laugh a lot (I'm very Italian in that way). :D

Why take lessons now:
I always say to people considering voice lessons to just come as they are. Leave your worries at the door:) I understand that a person's voice is a very personally extension of who they are and it can be intimidating to sing in front of a professional.

I have taught hundreds of students and am well versed in seeing many different vocal issues.

I want to assure any potential students that the space I provide is professional, safe (background check three times, most recently 11/15) encouraging, friendly and welcoming.

Age and Advancement:
Please note: Voice begins at age 12 (the very youngest) and piano at age 5.

I teach beginner to expert level advancement in voice and beginner to late intermediate advancement in piano.

How I developed my studio:
I started my teaching career at a music studio full time as a vocal and piano instructor and have over six years experience.

At the music studio I was so highly recommended by my clients to potential students that a wait-list became necessary to work with me.

My success in teaching has allowed me to open up my own private studio from home, which has been such a blessing:)

Who makes up my clientele:
I have a diverse range of students in terms of age, background, experience and interest for their musical aspirations.

Reasons range from personal to professional gain. Some of my students study voice to improve individually and others study on a more professional level such as getting into a music program for voice or preparing for auditions.

We moved to Mt. Vernon area less than a year ago, and we needed a piano instructor for our three children who was affordable, but both my husband and I are from musical backgrounds, which makes finding a teacher a difficult process, as we aren't interested in taking just anyone who happens to have a degree in music. Christine is a rare find. She teaches in what I would describe as an immersion style that keeps the lessons steeped with concepts from theory to technique to artistry. She surrounds the children (mine ages 5, 9, and 11) with explanation, demonstration, analogy, and encourages them to learn at their own pace. "Do you understand?" is her gentle motto, probing for areas where the children need reinforcement. When they admit they aren't getting something, she will circle back to explanation from many different angles, illustrating a deeply empathetic reading of individual learning styles. My 5 year old began lessons 3 months ago and is already reading music. She listens to the children and asks thoughtful questions about their personalities. Christine is exacting in the best way an invested parent could hope for. Masterfully, she challenges the children to perfect themselves as she allows the time for such training and evolution to take place. I have been so pleased and excited over the children's experience, that I am seriously considering taking voice lessons with her, myself. I could not more highly recommend a piano instructor.

It was truly by chance that I found Christine after another instructor didn't work out, and I am so fortunate! Day one, I was impressed with her professionalism, passion for music, and patience with a first time adult piano student.

I've always wished I had played an instrument growing up; now that I'm stable, I decided to go for it! However, I was very nervous, considering I had no musical experience. Christine has been nothing short of encouraging. In addition, my 8 year old son is taking lessons with her. It is evident that she has a gift when it comes to teaching. She has constructed her teaching methods in a way that is suitable for all ages. Although I'm learning to play at an accelerated pace compared to my son, we're able to communicate and play together because of Christine's consistency with her teaching methods.

Christine's goal for all of her students is that they will leave with the confidence and ability to go out and teach others how to play the piano. As a healthcare professional, I love knowing the rationale for things; that's what you're going to get with her. No memorization over here!! With each week, I'm getting better with reading music, understanding the WHY behind what I'm doing, and becoming more familiar with my instrument.

Christine is undoubtedly an accomplished expert in both piano and voice (she taught my 7 year old daughter both) and has an unique ability to translate this expertise into "laymans" terms for even the youngest student. I watched my daughter grown during our time with Christine, in not only her musical abilities but also as a young lady -- taking responsibility to practice at home, wanting to do her best, and reading her lessons to make sure she was on track. Christine is pleasant and engaging, and yet has a gentle firmness when my daughter needed that extra nudge along the way. I could not give her a higher review, for any student, at any age ... with Christine as your teacher you will learn, grown and achieve your goals. (I say "was." as we moved across the country, otherwise we would have been with Christine until my daughter went to college ... my daughter, and I, think the world of her!)

Kepa F.

Waldorf, MD

My students enjoy learning to read sheet music, play piano by ear, and to compose original music. $15/student for 2-/3-child lessons. $30 for single student lessons. 3-child lessons last 45 minutes. All others last 30 minutes.

I offer individual and discounted group piano lessons (to help parents afford lessons for 2 or three student lessons.) In my lessons students learn to play by ear, read music, compose original music, and even to improvise. I try to keep things fun, and children's lessons involve a lot of moving and interactive computer/tablet activities as well. These resources and activities are available for adult or teen lessons as well, but not required.

About Kepa

Hi! I'm Kepa Freeman and I'm a musician/educator/composer/tutor/songwriter based in Waldorf, MD who's offering a few different services on this site, but one thing is consistent: I work my hardest to give fun/engaging lessons that guide my students to success.

In terms of credentials I have a Master's of Arts in Teaching in Special Education (Trinity Washington University) and a Bachelor's of Science in Music (Temple University). I'm also a licensed Special Education Teacher for grades K-12 in Washington, DC. On the musical side, my musical credentials can be heard here: www.broadjam.co
m/kepafreeman.

A little about my experience as a teacher. I've spent the last 5 years working as an elementary Special Education Teacher. Before that I was a Music Production Teacher. Before that, I was a teacher's aide for a Special Education High School. a Substitute Teacher, and a Tutor. Overcoming challenges to show my students success is what I do!

I hope to work with you soon!

Kepa was my son's special education teacher in elementary school. We were so impressed with Kepa's professionalism and he did a great job providing services that were above and beyond the goals in my son's IEP. Once my son moved on to middle school, Kepa tutored him successfully in math and writing. Kepa is kind, creative, and fun and has a particular gift for meeting kids where they are.
