Joel J.

Tampa, FL

About Joel

Hi! I have been teaching for over seven years and am no stranger to the stage. While majoring in music performance at the University of West Georgia, I performed with jazz ensembles, guitar quartets, and percussion ensembles. I also performed many solo classical guitar recitals. The only thing I love more than performing, is teaching and sharing music.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons generally include three parts with content depending on your level of experience: technique, repertoire, and theory. I am an enthusiastic although laid back teacher, however I do push my students in order
for them to realize themselves as a musician. I like to have fun with lessons because music is fun and I enjoy it. I hope you do too!

Literature used in lessons:

New Dimensions in Classical Guitar for Children, By Sonia Michelson

The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method

Diatonic Major and Minor Scales, By Andres Segovia

Guitar Aerobics, By Troy Nelson

John Brimhall's Complete Theory Notebook, by of course John Brimhall

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room with 3 guitars, 1 bass, and an amp. Seating available. No pets.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide everything needed during the first lessons. After which the student shall provide a music stand, tuner, guitar, and all literature.

*** Specialties ***
Specialty in classical guitar, improvisation, and music theory.

I've had several different musical teachers throughout my life and I must say that I never really enjoyed any of them. Classes always seemed boring, far too structured, and like work instead of play. Once I started meeting with Joel though, my perception was greatly changed.

I love learning from Joel because he is enthusiastic and excellent at communicating music theory and technique. It never really feels like we have an exact structure that we have to follow but he always manages to keep me progressing. Regardless if I come in one day and just feel like jamming or if I want to raddle my brain with music theory all lesson, Joel is prepared and happy to do either.

I will highly recommend anyone to Joel that would like to learn to play in the classical style. He keeps the fire alive, truly loves his music, and is very passionate about it. These are the keys that bring beauty, creativity, and fun to the part of music, studying it proficiently, that can be frustrating or boring.

After a decade of failed teachers and being solely self taught, I couldn't be happier that I found a great teacher like Joel.

Joel has been instructing our daughter for several months now, and he has been absolutely wonderful. He is an extremely knowledgeable and patient teacher who also knows when its appropriate to push you out of your comfort zone. He makes the lessons fun and has no problem keeping an eight year old engaged for an entire session. She looks forward to Thursdays because that's Joel Day. You can tell he loves what he does, and that he genuinely cares for his students. For anybody looking for a great instructor, we would highly recommend Joel.

Joel is the nicest guitar teacher ever! During the first lesson he evaluated where I am as a musician and since then he has kept me challenged and helped my improve my skills in just a couple lessons. He's super patient and flexible and makes sure to emphasize proper technique, which is exactly what I was looking for in a teacher.

Mike M.

Holiday, FL

About Mike

Mike has been playing the guitar for over 35 years. For the last 12+ years he has played guitar with the modern worship teams at two different churches. For the last 5+ years he has been teaching guitar at the local elementary and middle schools. And since 2005 he has shared his love of the guitar with thousands of school children as part of the annual Great American Teach-In. Mike has played professionally as a session guitarist for several musical theater productions and as a long-time guitarist in his church's praise band.

Mike holds a B.A. in Audio Recording and Production and worked
as a radio DJ and music store manager for several years before moving into the technology sector. Mike has extensive experience as an audio engineer (FOH and studio) as well as video editing experience. During his 25+ years in the technology world Mike has been a corporate trainer, application developer, support consultant, and college professor, teaching I.T. classes at a local career college. Mike is constantly seeking new ways to merge his love of music with his technical background.

Mike's teaching style is a mix of the theoretical and the practical. He believes in providing a solid "book knowledge" (chord theory, music reading, tab, etc.) but framed in a fun and engaging way that motives the student to want to play (and practice) their instrument. This is accomplished by using songs and musical styles that appeal to the student vs. simply "going by the book" all the time. Whether teaching music or computer skills, Mike has been blessed with the ability to translate the technical into "layman terms" so that the student can quickly grasp the concept without getting hung up on the "geek speak."

As for how a typical lesson works with Mike, the student provides his/her own guitar and Mike will provide some printed reference material, audio samples, practice CDs, etc. Mike's specialties included rock and blues, help with equipment selection and setup (general guitar maintenance, effects usage/signal routing, etc.), and music theory, including traditional notation and guitar tabs.

He is an excellent teacher! Just because you play drums doesn't mean you can teach drums. My son has shown so much growth working with Glenn. He is truly a great teacher and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Christina and I were a good fit. I was reluctant to find a teacher on line, but she turned out to be a pleasant surprise. She's easy to work with, she's patient and her instructional explanations are a monumental plus. I think this will be a long lasting relationship....I highly recommend this young lady.

Christina is an excellent teacher. She is very detailed when
explaining how to play a song in the correct time signature.
I like the fact that she does not move forward until I have
learned where my problem areas are; for example timing.
I would highly recommend Christina as a piano teacher.
