Dan C.

Barrington, IL

About Dan

I have been playing guitar for 30 years, starting with Rock/Blues before studying both Classical and Jazz guitar in college. I received my Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1995. I am currently a guitar teacher in the NW Chicago suburbs and in Chicago currently with 45+ students, teaching all ages, all levels and all styles. I have been teaching guitar and music off and on for the past 20+ years but in 2007 I decided to devote myself to teaching full time (yes, teaching guitar is my primary job!)...one of the best decisions I have ever made!

To me, play
ing music is an incredibly rewarding experience. It's also a lot of fun! But no matter what your goals are in music, I have found, through many years of playing and teaching, that every musician needs a basic understanding of their instrument and of music in general. Whether you are learning piano, saxophone, violin, flute or guitar all music students will need to know about the basics of music, how it works and where the notes are on their instrument. My goal as a guitar and music instructor is to *teach people how to teach themselves*. I would love to have you study with me for years and years, but a good instructor should be able to show people what they need to know so that they can be their own primary music educator for the rest of their lives. Not only is it more economically friendly for the student, I see it as simply the right thing to do. My lessons are designed to make the absolute most of a student's motivation and to keep them motivated to maximize their learning experience!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are an absolute beginner or more experienced guitar player, I see it as my mission to prepare all of my students to be *musicians*, not just people who can move their fingers on a guitar. I believe that all musicians should think of music as a language: if you don't understand the basics of any language how can you expect to communicate well in that language?

Beginners can expect to learn the foundations of guitar and music: good finger and pick technique, familiarity with basic notes, simple chords, basic musical concepts, easy and fun songs. More advanced students can expect to improve in many aspects of guitar playing in most styles and in their understanding and appreciation of music- advanced playing techniques (pick and finger style), scales, arpeggios, advanced chord forms and chord progressions, melodic improvisation in any style, music theory, ear training, etc. I teach beginning and intermediate Classical guitar as well. I request that Classical guitar students already have some prior guitar experience (knowledge of basic notes and chords).

In my years as a guitar student and as a teacher, I have learned that communication is the key to good, productive lessons and as much as possible I cater lessons to what each student is interested in, while having fun!

At this time I am offering lessons on Friday afternoons and evenings at my Inverness teaching studio. Due to my weekly teaching schedule, I am not currently available to offer in-home lessons at student's homes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My teaching studio is equipped with: amplifier, cords, music stand, guitar stand, laptop PC, printer, play-along programs for practice, hundreds of self-authored exercises for all levels. I also have a huge library of guitar books, songs and other materials available for lesson material as well. Method books to use for lessons available to purchase from me ($8-$10 generally). Just bring yourself, a guitar (acoustic or electric), a pick or two and we'll be ready to roll!

Vaughn has been taking lessons with Dan for the past 2 years (she is now 8). I am Vaughn's mom typing exactly what she asks me to write, and here is what she would like to say about Dan:
"He is really patient. He teaches you so that you can think through it and know how to do it. He always makes sure you understand everything before you move on. He is always happy. He is an outstanding guitar teacher".
From the mom's point of view:
Dan is perfectly suited for teaching kids. He is patient and kind and engaged. You can tell that he truly loves what he does, and that rubs off on the kids. To be honest, it would be much easier for our family if she took guitar lessons from the place where she already does dance and theatre, but we stay with Dan because he is just that fantastic!

Ok ...I am the mom paying for the lessons and I can say we get our moneys worth! Dan is a talented musician and a great teacher. He is patient with the kids and flexible with time . Always willing to make up lessons or change out times. The songs he teaches are enjoyable to listen to and the kids have done well . The recital was at the library , very casual and low stress for the kids and parents. Dan worked with each student on an individual basis to improve their performance. Thanks Dan!

Steven B.

Hanover Park, IL

About Steven

I have been studying and performing music for 20+ years. After majoring in music at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn IL, I went to step up my level of study at the Percussion Institute of Technology (P.I.T.) at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA in 2001 attaining a Performance Certificate from my time studying there.

Moving back to Chicago after L.A. in 2002 proved to be the right move as this is when I began my teaching career. With 12+ years of private and group music instruction experience, I have worked with Hix Brothers Music, Naperville Music, Roselle Music, Streamwood Park Distri
ct, After School Enrichment Solution's Guitar Stars, Band For Today, Guitar Fundamentals, Chicago Guitar Instruction, Schaumburg Music Academy, Music Makers of Western Springs, and also maintain a private clientele. Well into a thousand lessons taught, students have stayed with me for up to 7 years. You, the student, will gain all the experience I have gained from my 20 years of study, performance, and instruction.

Performing with various bands in the 2000's, I pinpointed my style and mastered my technique that gave me many performance opportunities regionally and nationally, noting most current act U2 tribute Vertigo USA and country rock cover act soon to be announced featuring members of Trash Martini.

I am co-founder of the music licensing production company Blue Shade Music, co-writing with astute musicians in the Chicago area for music libraries in Florida and California currently.

With national and international touring experience, I was featured in an exclusive interview for Online Drummer in August of 2011 sharing my knowledge and experience of music and drums.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to have a fun and educational time with you!

Steven is a great teacher! He's flexible, and works well with all ages! He's teaching my 3 kids, drums, guitar and bass. He's very receptive and adjusts his lessons according to what my kids are interested in. For example one of my kids was learning notes, but then the other wanted to learn a specific song and he easily adjusted to focus on what each of them wanted to do to. My kids love him!

I took 5 in-home guitar lessons from Steve and loved every minute! I had never played guitar before so we were starting from scratch. We covered a lot of information, tailored to what I wanted to learn, and I felt like I made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. Steve was always on time, well-prepared for lessons, and was very encouraging. I would recommend Steve to anyone interested in taking guitar lessons.

Voytek F.

Rolling Meadows, IL

About Voytek

Hi, my name is Voytek and I love music! I currently do over 200 shows a year and in addition to performing as a soloist, I play in 2 gigging ensembles. Thanks to music, I've been able to meet many incredible people and travel all over the world to Germany, New York, Switzerland, Washington DC and the Dominican Republic. My goal is to inspire my students and share with them my passion for music so they can also experience how wonderful and rewarding it really is. Let's rock some jams!

*** Lesson Details ***
While teaching lessons, I like to keep the atmosphere relaxed but productive. I
utilize many proven traditional teaching techniques (for example: scales, theory, exercises, drills and prepared pieces) however, I also try to keep things fresh with fun backing tracks and music theory games to keep students engaged. I am also very flexible and open to suggestions, so I encourage students to ask questions and let me know if they want to learn a specific song or musical concept.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio is equipped with a 76-key keyboard, drum set, music stands, recording equipment and a PA system. Plenty of parking available, either in the driveway or on the street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
In order to teach at a student's home I will need a quiet room/area where we can concentrate on our studies. If the student is taking drum or piano lessons, they will need a drum kit or piano/keyboard. Also, a boombox/CD player may be necessary if we need to play with some backing tracks.

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet - Jazz & Classical

Drums - Everything from Jazz to Rock, Waltz, Cha-Cha, Metal etc.

Singing - All Pop music, old (Frank Sinatra era) and new (The Temptations) and newest (artists of today).

Audio Recording & Production - All styles, such as Rock, Pop,
Cinematic, Hip-Hop, Country etc.

Piano - Beginning piano, building a solid foundation.

Music Theory - I can answer questions and teach the concepts.

Having trouble with your band/choir part? Preparing for an audition and want to get first chair? I can help!

Voytek is a great teacher. I started with little knowledge of anything regarding the piano or reading music and Voytek was able to help me through the process to the point where I fell very confident in my skills. I have learned a lot from him in a small amount of time and I am very grateful for that.

He is also very accommodating and flexible when it comes to making appointment times and rescheduling appointments. Great guy and great teacher.

Eric J.

Elgin, IL

About Eric

Hi.
I'm Eric and I own a Studio in Elgin, IL. I'm a professional, full time musician and educator and my guitar has been paying my bills my entire adult life. I have real world, professional experience playing guitar as well as bass guitar, drums, piano, mandolin and more on countless gigs here in Northern, IL. I teach between 30-50 private students per week. I have taught hundreds of students in the past 12 years how to reach their musical goals. I've played tons of theater. I played guitar, mandolin, and drums as a swing musician for the Chicago Production of Jersey Boys at the Bank of Amer
ica Theater in 2008. In 2014 I played a lot theater gigs for local productions such as Little Shop of Horrors (bass), Hands on a Hardbody (Guitar, Steel/Slide) and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat (guitar). I grew up as a gigging rock n roll/blues guitar player, but my heart is in jazz. I am confident and fluent in, and have gigged most styles of guitar playing.

Taking lessons with Eric is awesome. He shows me how to play my favorite songs but he also shows me how to understand the music theory behind the songs. This makes learning songs so much easier. Eric always finds a way to keep me learning the things I SHOULD know while teaching me the stuff I WANT to know.

Lessons with Eric provided me with the tools I needed to become a more complete musician – not just a better guitarist. In broad strokes, I read music, developed a much better ear, learned how to construct chords, got exposure to the Real Book, possessed a nice repertoire of scales, and could tackle songs without the assistance of tabs after taking lessons from Eric for a few years. The structure of each lesson built on previous material and can be presented at any pace; Eric's attention to detail makes sure every student masters the material to the best of his or her ability before moving on to a more advanced topic, which helps ensure legitimate progress is made lesson-to-lesson. Eric's emphasis on music theory and jazz allowed me to pick up the piano rather easily, and dynamic lessons where he got behind a drum kit to teach me odd time signatures helped me develop a fantastic sense of timing and the confidence to sit behind the drums as well.
