I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University. *** Lesson Details *** Voice I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song. Acting As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on. Creative and Lyric Writing I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

"There are two basic levels that every singer must address. The first one is addressing the condition of the body and voice and the second one is addressing the functioning of the voice and body."
I - Silent Foundation
The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.
II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors
This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. You should be able to develop enough range, power, control and skill so that you can express your heart without feeling like you're incapable of achieving what you pursue. To achieve these abilities training is often necessary.

Gabriel is a very friendly guy who really understands what the students need to become a great singer. Having just taken a few months of lessons with him, I can already feel myself not only improve but also sing without any discomfort. Best thing to happen to my voice
Peter has been the best thing to ever happen to my voice. I started studying with Peter freshman year of college and I still see him regularly 6 years later. He took my completely untrained voice and helped me find, not only technique but also confidence in myself and my abilities. If it weren't for him I would not be pursuing musical theatre as a career. A Superb and Supportive Teacher!
Peter is by far the best voice teacher I ever had. I have a very multi-faceted personality and very multi-faceted voice. I was struggling to find my true voice after being told I was everything from a mezzo to a coloratura soprano. Unlike some teachers who heard a certain part of my voice and were determined to place me in a box based only that one part, Peter would always tell me to let my voice do what it wants to do. I have never felt like he ever took offense if I decided something I was working on was not right for me. He has only ever been completely open and supportive if I wanted to try something. He is the first teacher who let me go to my extremes, just to touch upon all the colors of my voice, and then he helps me find balance and settle into my true voice.
My voice is still a work in progress, but he has helped me so much, with his expert knowledge of vocal production and how the body can affect the sound being produced, with his open, "let's try it" energy but also with the right amount of guidance so that I'm not just floating all over the place. He has guided me to quite a few of the best pieces I have ever sung because of his incredible intuition about what would suit my voice. He is well-versed in repertoire and he is a very strong pianist.
He's also been supportive in other ways, suggesting books on auditioning and breathing, and sharing articles about the voice and about physical health as well (the winter can be hard on a voice!). He's by far just the best teacher I have ever had, and worth every single penny! There aren't enough words to show how much I consider Peter to be an all-around amazing teacher.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.
BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:
1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.

After years of acting training in both Undergraduate and Grad School I thought I was prepped for the professional world. Unbeknownst to me, auditioning is actually a completely different skill than acting. They are related but are in no way the same. You can actually be an incredible actor who is a terrible auditioner. This is where Joe comes in--he's spent countless hours (probably close to Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000) learning the skills it takes to give not just a good, but a great and memorable audition. He can take an audition side that I'm working on and give me a completely unique take on it after seeing the script for a mere 2 minutes. His insight and creativity is uncanny, as is his ability to see holes in my game that I don't even know exist. Truthfully, every time I've had him coach me for an audition (film/TV or Theatre) I have at least gotten a callback. His ability to come up with unique and memorable ideas are enough alone to use him. I know that after he's coached me that I am nothing but prepared for what's to come. I stroll into audition rooms bursting with confidence. I cannot sing his praises enough. I feel bad for stealing his creative ideas--the ideas he comes up with for me--but hey, all the best artists steal! Use Joe!

My 6 year old daughter is pursuing an acting career and has been working on it for 1 year. Choosing Joe was the best find we could have come across!! Olivia won 1st place for her 2 person scene shortly after Joe started coaching her, and 8 weeks later auditioned for the main character of a Hollywood movie and was told by the director that she was "fantastic". He brings something to the table that I would not be without now that I have seen it work for her. He shows up to lessons with an actual camera and lights to imitate an audition and shows her on video how she did and what the camera sees. He is strict enough to keep me happy that progress is being made and that the time is used resourcefully, but is very kid friendly and Olivia loves working with him. He is patient too. I highly recommend him, although we'd like to be stingy with his time and keep him to ourselves!! :) He also brings actual Hollywood scripts for her to learn and work on (sides). He is truly fantastic!!
