With my instruction, we'll aim to explore and hopefully master true harmonic and rhythmic support within an ensemble. I will focus deeply on pocket, vibe, accuracy, musicality, non cerebral expression, and most importantly, the art of being an in demand solid-as-a-rock bass player. We will work music theory, warm ups, learn and analyze essential bass lines, bass line composition, learn songs we love and more.

About Joel

My biggest asset as a teacher is that i'm also (and probably more importantly) an in demand, working bass player in Los Angeles. I play gigs of all sizes locally and throughout the world and also participate in major network recording sessions for both film and television. Most recently, I played b

In the few months I've been studying with Joel, my bass playing has totally transformed. I had experience as a guitarist, but wanted to delve into the idiosyncrasies of bass playing so I could craft better parts for recording projects. Joel has helped me refine my technique, broaden my understanding of harmony in popular music, and develop a deep, authentic pocket. Now I'm playing bass like a bassist; not a guitarist (there's a big difference)!
Jeff
I’m a professional drummer who has been taking bass lessons with Joel for the last year. I’m so grateful to be taking lessons with a professional bassist who is actually working in the industry! He’s a great guy and has a wealth of inside information on what it takes to be a touring and recording bassist. I’d recommend Joel to students of all ages levels. Thank you, Joel!
Jonathan
Joel is such an amazing teacher! He knows so much about the bass and has excellent taste in music. I had so much fun learning more about how to groove better and improve my tone. I look forward to more lessons with him in the future!

Brody was there at my most important formative years as a guitarist. His ideas and methods took what I had learned on my own and helped me turn it into something cohesive and musical. I would highly recommend lessons from Brody.

Seth attended several of my classes for six months and also have seen him perform many times in the live performance workshop during his time at MI. I have studied with educators Gerry Pineda and Tom Derthick in the Sacramento area. Through my studies, I have been exposed to a broad range of musical styles which include jazz, classical, funk, Latin, and pop. I believe that my unique approach to teaching emphasizes the importance of technique and fundamentals, which will give the student skills to achieve their highest musical aspirations.

"Rob is great!

Rob is great. His teaching style is informal and comfortable. He is very laid back. Rob is very patient with beginning students and can really coax their talent from them. I've seen him with more experienced students too, and their sessions seemed to be almost a jam session.
Rob has taught my son since he decided to take up the Bass and so we have known Rob for many years and have become friends. We've seen him perform in a lot of venues. He can sound like Paul McCartney or John Lennon as a Beatle or Geddy Lee in Rush. I'm sure he can surprise me with his stylistic range. Even as a bassist, which usually are very staid, he leads the group with his vocals.
He can act too, and make us laugh with just the right timing.
As a teacher, you can't do better than Rob."

I am an adult who started taking a new instrument and just after a few weeks with him, I'm already able to play much more than I ever dreamed I would. "David is fantastic. He is very smart and his formal education in music shines through in his teachings. He teaches the proper foundational techniques which may be harder to adopt initially but without it, advancement to high level playing is much more difficult and time consuming. David's direct teaching style creates very efficient sessions and maximum progression. David has the right balance of formal music education to ensure proper technique, and his personal band side project to ensure that you are enjoying the process since that's what's most important."
