I have played saxophone since I was in 5th grade. I have been in a variety of groups over the years; rock, funk, punk, jazz quartets and big-band jazz, and the experimental use of electronics. You will learn proper breath (dynamics) and embouchure control, tonguing techniques, standard and alternate fingerings, approaches to improvisation and assistance with a varied repertoire for performance. I own a 1967 Beuscher alto saxophone and an Elkhart C-tenor saxophone. My home studio has recording capability which I use to record lessons when they are needed for review. Ear training is a crucial part to music on any level, and I encourage playing by ear as an important element to improvisation and music appreciation. My lessons are fun, informative, and creative!

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach intermediate and beginning saxophone lessons.

The first lesson was successful. My particular background in piano is unique, and my needs are atypical as well. I thought Thomas assessed my abilities, lack of abilities, and goals well and quickly. He started me on a different perspective on looking at music (reading the staff) that seems very helpful. I'm encouraged.

I wish I had started playing saxophone sooner!

When I was a kid, I had no idea what amazing experiences I would have, the places I would see, and the people I would meet because I could play the saxophone as an adult. It didn’t feel very cool sometimes when I was just in band class or practicing alone in my room. It wasn't until I graduated high school that I started taking lessons, making connections, and eventually playing live it changed my life. I gained a love for the saxophone and life that I never could have imagined before I started taking regular lessons and performing.

I will strive to make lessons unique and fun for each individual whatever your current skill level, and I will challenge you enough to help you grow quickly and make playing your saxophone an important and enjoyable part of your life like it has been for mine.

"Sarah is very easy to work with, always interested in helping you the student have fun with the sax, as she has. Despite her great experience and background (or because of it?) she never seemed bored or working beneath herself with a beginner. I could say more, but I better take this time to practice!"

"I look forward to my lessons with Dan every week. I’m a beginner alto player and Dan does a great job patiently answering all my questions and giving comprehensive advice. He’s very analytical and gives you the detailed context of why what you’re learning is important and how it fits into the context of playing in a band, different styles etc. He will flex lessons based on what you need to know but also what you’re interested in. Most importantly he’s fun and just an all around great guy. He’s the man, what else can I say."

"I have been learning how to play the tenor saxophone with Lonze for seven months. I had never picked up the sax before, so I was truly starting from zero. I have enjoyed working with Lonze because he emphasizes the importance of on fundementals like practicing long tones, scales, tounguing and rythm. I have also been learning from him how to read music. When I am faced with a note I cannot seem to hit, he is able to provide specific guidence and advice on how to work one's embochure and throat in order that, through practice, I can work towards improving. The same aplies to finger positioning, as he has provided me with specific advice on how to position my fingers for best fluidity between notes. He has been very encouraging during this process, which keeps me motivated to continue. I look forward to continued learning under his tutelage."

"Dr. Wen was the best professor and lesson instructor I have ever had. I took lessons with him for over seven years starting in high school and throughout my entire college. He shares his expertise in music theory, techniques, and instrument mechanics. He really helped me gain confidence in my playing abilities, showed me how I should be practicing in order to get the most of each rehearsal, and taught me so much about myself as a player. His ability to instruct on every aspect of playing the instrument is something I really admire. Need help rhythmically? He will help you understand time, measurement, and notes. Need help technically? He has all the ways to practice to get that much closer to perfection and how to maintain it. Need help with scales? He will help you to truly understand the scale in order for you to play it better. Not only will he help with the "how-tos," he will explain the why. Needing help with breathing techniques or articulations? He will take you through exercises that will enhance every aspect of your playing. He sets the standards high, and helps you reach your goals. I will always recommend Dr. Wen!"
