Michael has been teaching drums to my 6-year-old son for the past 5 months. He has been really great to work with. My son loves going to his lessons, where he always has fun. Michael's demeanor is perfect for my son, keeping the lesson light and breezy in tone, but making sure he is always learning proper technique and advancing his skills.

Michael is very flexible, always working with us to adjust the schedule when needed. We rented drums at first (which we were able to do through Michael - I asked, he provided; no pressure sales), but when we were ready to purchase, he helped us find the right set. Michael even helped us get a reduced price through a local music store.

I can't say enough good things about our experience with Michael. The best testimony that I can give is that my son loves to practice his drums every day, without having to be asked!

Great teacher for learning basic to advanced skills!

Gabe is a great teacher to get students started learning their basic skills on piano, drums, guitar or bass. He is really patient and takes the time to make sure the student really learns each specific skill. Gabe picks out exercises that make learning new skills fun and even arranges the students favorite pop tunes to help fit in with the skills being taught. Gabe really makes lessons fun and helps students learn the songs that keep them excited about playing!!

I sat in the room while 5 year old Maia had her lesson with Lisa. Maia seemed relaxed and able to follow Lisa's instructions. I was really impressed with Lisa's approach to the lesson and feel lucky to have connected with her. Maia said she likes her teacher too and was able to show me what she learned in her first lesson! Looking forward to future lessons with Lisa!

Monica S.

Milwaukee, WI

About Monica

I am a flutist, keyboardist, vocalist, director, composer, arranger, and educator who has performed in chamber ensembles specializing in Baroque repertoire since 1998. I have over twenty years of professional flute and piano performance as well as instruction on those instruments to my credit. My studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison covered the theoretical, historical, and performing aspects of music. My coursework in Madison led me to researching the secular cantatas of Christoph Graupner in Darmstadt, Germany on a Fulbright.

In addition to interest in performing newly-composed music for traverso and harpsichord, my recent work with many different people as a church music director has led me back to a want to teach full time. Helping students of any age learn to play the flute, recorder, fife, traverso (baroque flute), or piano as well as furthering knowledge in sight-reading, improvisation, and history is the goal. Additionally, I want to help music students of all ages find other people just as passionate about music with whom they could collaborate.

I look forward to working with you.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson formats are tailored to the individual student. There are many different kinds of learning styles out there, and I try to use what I've found to be the most efficient approach and then form it to the student's needs. I have experience with various published methods, preferring to work with the Rubank method books with other supplemental solo and etudes for later use for my flute students, and I prefer the Adventures in Piano and Wonderkeys methods for piano. (Please note that, if you have a particular method or publication you wish to continue, I have successfully adapted my teaching plan to many and can do so for you as well.) I have experience working with students with challenges such as ADD and autism. Though my approach is laid back, I cover a lot of ground. In this way, we can work together to get you playing a melody with a fairly wide range (on flute) or a simple piece with hands together in a reasonable time. I can also help with learning basic improvisation, sight-reading, ear-training, and other helpful music theory skills.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in music room, digital piano, music stand, chairs.

*** Travel Equipment ***
At times, I can bring new books for purchase, or sight-reading materials. I expect the flute student to have a flute, a music stand, a 3-ring binder, and music for the lesson. I expect the piano student to have an instrument at home on which to practice, and should bring a 3-ring binder and music for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I consider myself a good all-purpose flute teacher, but I do specialize in baroque style and ornamentation. If I inherit a student who has already studied with someone else, and s/he is on a budget, I will work with whatever method they have already purchased. I prefer the Rubank books for starting out with flute students because it covers the various keys more equally, so students don't get stuck in playing only in Bb Major. I adapt them to the age and learning style of the student to make it easier to learn. It will be likely that I will begin offering fife-to-flute lessons for the younger ones, for whom the flute is too big. Future plans include getting certified in Suzuki flute instruction, so watch for that!

In addition to teaching regular piano/keyboard lessons, I also offer Wunderkeys lessons. Wunderkeys is an approach for piano lessons for preschoolers. I am passionate about chamber music. Getting a chance to get people to work together by playing music together is such a wonderful opportunity.

Monica is very knowledgeable, friendly, inspiring and definitely very talented! I began taking lessons with Monica after my previous piano teacher moved out of state. She was very accommodating when she said we could continue working out of the same book I had already purchased. I am so grateful for her patience, especially when I cannot get my fingers to do what I want them to do and also when my brain is foggy after a long day at work. As a thirty-something gal who is a newbie-to-piano, I am so thankful for everything Monica has done for me.

Paul N.

Milwaukee, WI

About Paul

***My goal as a teacher***

I try to teach what the students are interested in and make it fun and interesting so that they learn the lessons and their favorite songs. Every student is different and needs to be taught in a way that makes learning easy and fun for them.

I have a passion for all people and all ages and am blessed to be able to teach from the very young, (ages 2-5 Kindermusik lessons) to teens and adults.....all the way to senior citizens. I've had many older students all the way up to a 93 year old gentleman who is taking singing lessons and asked me to put music to his l
yrics. We have recorded over 50 songs together.

***Background***

I started playing trumpet in 5th grade and knew that music was for me. I also liked playing with drums and piano also because they seemed exciting. I've competed in WSMA (Wisconsin School Music Assoc.) for many years which taught me a lot about performing for judges, being relaxed, and the importance of preparation.

I started playing the guitar and bass guitar when I was 13 and have never stopped practicing and performing since. I also have done a lot of writing, recording, producing, and have a Pro Tools Studio for students to use.

***College and Teaching***

I began teaching music lessons in college and enjoyed it very much. I received my B.A. in Music from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. There I was very much involved with guitar, piano, voice, trumpet, and being in bands and writing music. After receiving my B.A. I also took 3 years of Education classes at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. I write, produce, and perform my music along with performing with bands around the Midwest.

***Life in Music***

After receiving my B.A. in Music, I continued teaching and opened up my home studio. After a year and a half I had enough students that I was able to quit my factory job and teach music full time. I've been teaching, performing, and writing music ever since.

***Performing and more***

I have been on stage performing music since I was 11. In school band, marching band, competing in music competitions, and in bands touring the Midwest.

I have recorded many CDs with bands and on my own. My most ambitious project was a CD of my original music called, "Girls". I've performed my music and promoted it by being interviewed on Milwaukee radio stations along with internet music sites such as CD Baby. It is very exciting talking on live radio about my music and my passion. It is also even more exciting, and scary, playing my music live on the radio, lol.

***Instruments Taught***

I have been teaching for over 2 decades. Students take lessons for:
* guitar (electric / acoustic)
* piano
* voice
* drums
* trumpet
* saxophone
* harmonica
* music theory / ear training
* studio recording / songwriting

I also give kindermusik lessons to 2-5 year old all the way up to senior citizens 70-93. I play parties, concerts, and Nursing Home performances.

I am experienced as an online (Skype) instructor, and I have taught online lessons worldwide. I've witnessed great results from my online students (both national and international).

I hope I can help you with all of your musical goals and get you going in a positive musical direction.

Good teacher and knows his stuff, but is too talkative and condescending. Lessons were interrupted by lectures to me on "life" and got off topic for several minutes (before I knew it the lessons were done because the lectures cut into our practice time). No real structure or lesson plan, just told me "the student is the boss and you decide where the lesson goes." Most teachers have a plan, structure, or goal for the student, at least by the 2nd lesson but not in this case. Also charged me for a cheap binder with music notes in it when I was done with the 1st lesson (which i would think is included in the price) and said it was optional, when in reality, I needed it to practice. If his lessons had more direction and he was more friendly, he would be a great teacher, but he was not for me.

Paul is a very patient and persevering teacher, he is particularly adept with the reluctant or difficult child, he never stops being encouraging and is dedicated to instilling knowledge to the child. I've had a very good experience with Paul and feel my child has gained some valuable musical knowledge at a young age which will become increasingly useful as time goes by.
