Christina B.

Lancaster, PA

About Christina

I began piano at age 6 under Suzuki-certified instructor Cindy Wittenburg. I loved everything about it - even practicing scales! After nine years, I took a break from piano and took up drums. While I loved drumming, upon my entry to Millersville University, I decided my number one love was still the ivories. I began learning under Dr. Anita Renfroe, graduating with a B.A. in Music Business & Technology. Although no longer in classes, I still teach myself piano works as well as write new pieces.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching philosophy is: Enjoy your time while learning something valua
ble! My teaching style is informal and relaxed, but I expect discipline and practicing on the end of the student. I love the excitement my students get from seeing progress, and if you're willing to work a little, progress is a guaranteed reward!

If you're someone who has never touched a keyboard in their life, after 4-6 months you can expect to be able to understand note values, read simple rhythms, sightread simple works, play pieces with two hands, among many other valuable skill sets. Late beginner to intermediate students can expect to be playing early advanced pieces within this time frame, as well as understanding more advanced concepts and techniques.

I utilize the Kodaly solfege method as I was taught at Millersville University, because I have found it invaluable in learning pieces. As a beginner, you will learn note values, rhythms, sight-reading, how to sing while playing, musical vocabulary, basic music history, theory relative to the piece you are learning, scales, arpeggios, proper performance technique, and much more! I frequently request a simple composition from the student to increase creativity and understanding of the instrument, and try to hold a recital bi-yearly for the students to show off their improvements!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I either provide the books and the parents reimburse me, or I tell the parents what to purchase. expect the student to provide either a piano or keyboard, a proper bench and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, Rock, Pop

Christina is soft spoken and patient. Our son struggles with self worth due to early childhood trauma and because of this he can't handle the slightest bit of failure. Christina handles his mistakes with encouragement and kindness and is teaching him that failure is normal and acceptable. She is just what he needed!

Susan R.

Camp Hill, PA

About Susan

I have over six years of teaching piano to children and adults, from beginner to intermediate levels. I also have over eight semesters of piano, as well as a minor in music. I occasionally play the piano for special music in church. I use what ever method I find suitable to the student. I also occasionally allow the student to pick his or her own music. For children, particularly younger ones, I use different things for incentives, such as stickers and lollipops. I worked in daycare for twenty two years, so I have experience with children from ages three to twelve.

Gary B.

Harrisburg, PA

About Gary

I love the piano and I am always excited at the prospect of sharing my passion for the instrument with those; young and old who are eager to explore this unique instrument for themselves. From the time I began taking lessons in the 3rd grade and now into my post retirement years, I have been an active player. My experience includes playing in jazz bands, choirs, supper clubs, special occasions, accompaniment for vocalists; playing and directing worship bands for traditional and contemporary worship services in gospel as well as contemporary Christian genres. My commitment to the piano has
led me to adapt a lifestyle of study and practice that has given me the proficiency as well as the knowledge of theory to adapt to many different musical environments. I am currently part of the worship team at Capital Area Christian Church in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania. We present contemporary Christian music with styles of rock, country, southern gospel, as well as traditional hymns. I have served as minister of Music at Dayspring Ministries in Middletown PA where I alternated between piano and the Hammond B-3 organ. I have also performed with the Harrisburg Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. I taught a number of beginners during the summer camp for the Dansante Community Center. I am looking forward to helping unlock for someone, the exciting mysteries of the world of music. It could be you.

*** Lesson Details ***
For young and old, beginning in music is a journey that begins where you are and leads you on a path of self discovery in the creative arts. We generally begin with the basics of music orientation; posture, finger position, notes, the staff, and the language of music. For each student, I use one of several instructional workbooks based upon experience and aptitude. All instruction includes theory, practical application through fundamental routines, and selections of songs based upon the current level of proficiency. After approximately three months, a more individualized instructional program can be tailored to the student based upon their development and interest. Because of the varied experiences that I have compiled, I we can employ different strategies to suit the learning style of the students.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are provided on a Yamaha Grand Piano. Seating for parents or those accompanying students in comfortable waiting areas including a family room with a TV or the sun-porch. A studio is dedicated to musician instruction is currently in development on the lower level. The studio will include acoustic and electronic keyboards to provide a wide range of experiences for students.

*** Specialties ***
I am experienced and equipped to teach classical music, sacred anthems, hymns; music that is jazz, blues, gospel, rock, and contemporary christian. My playing style is a combination of jazz, blues, and gospel.

Mr. Banks is wonderful! My daughter Jordyn really enjoys coming to piano lessons. She's learned so much in a few short months. She is really motivated to continuously improve and I never have to remind her to practice.

Amber R.

Carlisle, PA

About Amber

I began taking piano lessons at a young age and continued with them through my freshman year of college. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and five years of experience teaching private piano lessons. My degree and experience with elementary aged children have prepared me to be able to tailor lessons to my students' individual needs, explain concepts in creative ways, and adjust the pace of lessons as needed. Playing piano is something that I really enjoy, so I love having the opportunity to give students the skills they need to enjoy it, too!

*** Lesson Details ***
I try t
o create a learning environment that's fun and laid back while still maintaining reasonable expectations for my students. I love seeing my students succeed, so I do my best to give them all the tools they need to do so! Faber & Faber's Piano Adventures books are my preference for students. I want students to have fun and enjoy what they play, so I also like to include songs from whatever category my students' are most interested in, such as popular, jazz, musical theater, etc. After 6 months of taking lessons with me, students will have a firm grasp on all basic piano concepts (such as finger numbers, note names, the staff, and time signatures) and will have the ability to sight read beginning piano pieces. Whether you want to play professionally or just learn a new skill, I want to instruct students in a way that encourages them to love music and have fun along the way!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Open floor plan- Living/Dining area. Piano. Seating for parents. Street parking available.
