Rachel G.

Hampton, VA

Having played violin for almost 25 years, I hold a violin performance degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; most recently, I performed for over 10 years with an internationally touring Celtic group called Tullamore. I've been teaching violin and fiddle for over 13 years now, all ages, all learning types, and I look forward to working with you! Students describe me as a patient and encouraging teacher, and my teaching style as effective, fun, and relaxed! Call TakeLessons today, and we will schedule your first lesson!

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

Music Theory · Online

I have been taking theory lessons from Rachel for several months now to help learn the guitar. Learning theory can be very complex and quite a daunting task for a new music student. What I really appreciate is Rachel's patience and ability to try different approaches with me if a certain method doesn't quite resonate. She communicates and asks questions about the material she's going over to ensure that I'm comprehending what she's teaching. Another aspect that I'm very appreciative of is that Rachel gives me small, bite sized "chunks" of information that is easier to digest so that I'm not overwhelmed with learning too much at once. I intend to continue my musical journey with Rachel and also take on vocal lessons with Rachel as time permits. Her personality is very warm and personable and her commitment to helping others pursue their music goals really shines through. I consider Rachel to be a very well rounded musician and a master at her craft. I admire her musicianship and hope to attain her level of confidence and abilities as I pursue my own musical journey!!!

Viola · Online

I have always wanted to learn to play the viola but time has always been a fickle mistress with me so the viola I bought in late 2014 barely got played because of nursing school. I had an online violin lesson with Taylor Davis to support her new album and it gave me the idea to start taking lessons through skype. I spent my time looking through all the instructors on takelessons and chose Rachel because she plays the five string violin, which helps her understand both worlds and what can cross to violas and what can't. I took the plunge and signed up for lessons with her and it was one of the best decisions I've made.

Rachel is very knowledgeable and willing to work around a schedule, she's very quick to praise you when you get something right and also quick to correct to prevent bad habits from forming. Due to my inability to take lessons in real life I chose to take lessons from her but now that I am taking lessons from her I don't think I'd change to an in person instructor if I had the option.

Thank you Rachel for taking on someone who loves classical music and no idea how to play and starting me on the journey of one day playing the Walton viola concerto and the Vieuxtemps viola sonata.

Lydia M.

Chesapeake, VA

Have played in orchestras in Paraguay, Brasil, Argentina and USA. I started taking lessons at age 8, and finally had the opportunity to teach starting in 2013 at a music school in Paraguay. I like to incorporate pieces chosen by the student in the curriculum because it provides more motivation and excitement to learn! As part of learning to play the violin, it is essential to learn to sing the notes as well, so my approach includes a little bit of sight-reading and ear training as well.

About Lydia

When I was about to turn 8, I asked my parents for a violin as a birthday present! I have loved playing ever since. My mom is a piano teacher, so I learned to play the piano as well. I have played in orchestras, chamber strings, and quartets in Paraguay, Brasil, Guatemala, and the United States. The beauty of music is that it crosses all borders! I was born and raised in Paraguay but I came to the USA to go to college. Currently, I am working on a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I'm optimistic, responsible, and want to help others reach their full potential.

Experienced strings teacher of 3 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I have ten years' experience as a violinist in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. I structure my lessons so students learn a variety of music styles according to their personal interests, while also building a strong foundation of technique, music-reading, and ear-training skills. I specialize in classical repertoire (solo and ensemble), and typically work from the Suzuki method books. I look forward to exploring this beautiful instrument with you!

About Alexandra

I am a Hampton Roads native holding a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Lee University (Cleveland, TN). I am licensed to teach instrumental and vocal music to grades K-12 and have several years' experience privately teaching students ages 5 to adult. I began my musical journey with my first piano lessons at age five. Since then, I have studied the instrument in many different styles, including classical, jazz, modern, and worship. My primary instrument is the violin, which I have been playing classically for ten years, in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. This spring, I taught orchestral strings in a public school setting, working with grades 6-12 on violin, viola, cello, and upright bass. Though I primarily consider myself an instrumentalist, I also have ten years' ...

Introduction to Violin Music Notes
The violin is often considered by musicians to be one of the most challenging instruments to learn. Its roots trace back many centuries and it was clearly a definitive instrument in shaping classical music all over the world. One of the reasons it is considered a difficult instrument to learn is that it's a fretless string instrument, making violin music notes appear to be inexact, yet fingering must still be done with precision. The reward for learning this sweet-sounding elegant instrument, ho
