Lynn K.

Virginia Beach, VA

Violin/Fiddle basics, bowing technique, standard notation

About Lynn

Your
relationship with music & your chosen instrument is unique &
will  be life long.  I look forward to sharing  your
excitement as we pursue the path to comfort, confidence & the
eventual, inevitable joy you will achieve with your new friend.

Whether  you are 5, 25, or  perhaps 75 years old when you make the decision to enter the world of music, you will be changing your life for the positive.

*** Lesson Details ***
In a very calm, easy going atmosphere you can expect to laugh a bit, as it is called 'playing' music! You will have an understanding of how to read & play a minimum 3
songs each month, & will be picking up enough music theory as it applies to your instrument each week to feel confident & inspired to continue on as far as you desire. We will learn how to 'play well with others' in informal as well as more structured gatherings every few months, with no pressure, only compassion & encouragement.

For those wishing to join in the fun of playing bluegrass music, we will start out with technique exercises, scales, basic melodies & accompaniment patterns to prepare you to learn this unique & exciting style of American music. There are many gatherings in the area called 'Pickin' Parties' that I want to get you ready to participate in as soon as is humanly possible.

If you are one of those brave souls undertaking the lovely but challenging fretless instrument, the violin, my main focus is to get you started with the all the necessary basic techniques - holding the instrument & bow correctly, getting the best possible tone & pitch using efficiency & accuracy, mixed with a great deal of ear training & heart.

Specific songs you'd like to learn? Your reward for accomplishing what I deem necessary on whichever instrument you've chosen will be for us to listen to your desired piece & writing it out in either or tablature or standard notation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson studios contain piano, electronic keyboard, electronic drum set, music stand, tuner, metronome, manuscript books available for purchase, easy parking in the well lit front lot.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student must have own instrument & be willing to purchase necessary tools as recommended for their instrument, such as, music stand, tuner, pick, book, strap, etc.

*** Specialties ***
Bluegrass, Country, Country Rock, Contemporary Christian, Americana, Ragtime Blues Guitar, Fingerstyle, Flatpick, Accompaniment

Karen is thorough. You will find out immediately that she will find your weaknesses and work on those. She is a pro - she knows what she is doing and she knows what her students need. She listens to what her students want to accomplish and then she will add to her responses extra instructions that will focus on big picture success. She really understands the difference between playing alone and playing with a group. She knows exactly how every band member will respond to what you are playing.

Rachel G.

Hampton, VA

Having played violin for almost 25 years, I hold a violin performance degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; most recently, I performed for over 10 years with an internationally touring Celtic group called Tullamore. I've been teaching violin and fiddle for over 13 years now, all ages, all learning types, and I look forward to working with you! Students describe me as a patient and encouraging teacher, and my teaching style as effective, fun, and relaxed! Call TakeLessons today, and we will schedule your first lesson!

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learnin
g disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

Lydia M.

Chesapeake, VA

Have played in orchestras in Paraguay, Brasil, Argentina and USA. I started taking lessons at age 8, and finally had the opportunity to teach starting in 2013 at a music school in Paraguay. I like to incorporate pieces chosen by the student in the curriculum because it provides more motivation and excitement to learn! As part of learning to play the violin, it is essential to learn to sing the notes as well, so my approach includes a little bit of sight-reading and ear training as well.

About Lydia

When I was about to turn 8, I asked my parents for a violin as a birthday present! I have loved playing ever since. My mom is a piano teacher, so I learned to play the piano as well. I have played in orchestras, chamber strings, and quartets in Paraguay, Brasil, Guatemala, and the United States. The beauty of music is that it crosses all borders!
I was born and raised in Paraguay but I came to the USA to go to college. Currently, I am working on a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I'm optimistic, responsible, and want to help others reach their full potential.

Alexandra S.

Virginia Beach, VA

Experienced strings teacher of 3 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I have ten years' experience as a violinist in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. I structure my lessons so students learn a variety of music styles according to their personal interests, while also building a strong foundation of technique, music-reading, and ear-training skills. I specialize in classical repertoire (solo and ensemble), and typically work from the Suzuki method books. I look forward to exploring this beautiful instrument with you!

About Alexandra

I am a Hampton Roads native holding a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Lee University (Cleveland, TN). I am licensed to teach instrumental and vocal music to grades K-12 and have several years' experience privately teaching students ages 5 to adult.

I began my musical journey with my first piano lessons at age five. Since then, I have studied the instrument in many different styles, including classical, jazz, modern, and worship. My primary instrument is the violin, which I have been playing classically for ten years, in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. This spring, I taught
orchestral strings in a public school setting, working with grades 6-12 on violin, viola, cello, and upright bass.

Though I primarily consider myself an instrumentalist, I also have ten years' experience in choral singing, and have taught elementary choir. For the past three years, I have greatly enjoyed playing the ukulele in a variety of styles and teaching the instrument informally.
