Cara M.

Norfolk, VA

About Cara

Hi there! My name is Cara Isadora McKinney. I am an award winning vocalist and experienced performer who loves to teach singing. My goal is to demystify vocal technique for students and help them “find their voice" pretty quickly with patience and care; in a relaxed, positive, and supportive atmosphere. My goal is to help students improve breath control and support, projection, phrase length, range, intonation, quality, comfort, stage performance, presentation skills, and other technical and stylistic aspects in a safe, energetic, and friendly environment. I am currently available to teach les
sons at my studio, at your home, and online.

My credentials and affiliations include a Bachelor's in Vocal Music from Lamar University, Hurrah Players, Governor's School for the Arts, and VA Opera. I specialize in opera and musical theater. I also record and perform pop, rock, R&B, and jazz. Trained by some of the best artists and teachers in Virginia and Texas, I have gained extensive knowledge in vocal pedagogy that has allowed me to become versed in numerous styles and crossover genres. Contact me and we can discuss in more detail want you are looking for in a voice teacher, your vocal goals and experiences, as well as availability and location details. Do not miss the opportunity to work with someone who is really dedicated to nurturing voices and serving art in a down to earth way and will get you where you want to go fast.

This is my first attempt at learning to sing - I have only been taking lessons for a few weeks. As others have said, she is a patient teacher, which is good for someone like me who is just starting to figure it out. That said, it's also clear to me that she has the capacity to instruct far beyond the level that I hope to achieve. I would recommend Cara to anyone looking to improve their vocals, regardless of their level of experience.

Patient, friendly, encouraging, and empowering Cara's instruction pushes you past your mental boundaries in a way that facilitates objective progress and predictable growth. I was and continue to be impressed in how Cara has helped me find and perfect my voice! Learning to be your best is easier when you feel and know that you're being guided by the best.

Karen is thorough. You will find out immediately that she will find your weaknesses and work on those. She is a pro - she knows what she is doing and she knows what her students need. She listens to what her students want to accomplish and then she will add to her responses extra instructions that will focus on big picture success. She really understands the difference between playing alone and playing with a group. She knows exactly how every band member will respond to what you are playing.

Rachel G.

Hampton, VA

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learnin
g disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

Music Theory · Online

I have been taking theory lessons from Rachel for several months now to help learn the guitar. Learning theory can be very complex and quite a daunting task for a new music student. What I really appreciate is Rachel's patience and ability to try different approaches with me if a certain method doesn't quite resonate. She communicates and asks questions about the material she's going over to ensure that I'm comprehending what she's teaching. Another aspect that I'm very appreciative of is that Rachel gives me small, bite sized "chunks" of information that is easier to digest so that I'm not overwhelmed with learning too much at once. I intend to continue my musical journey with Rachel and also take on vocal lessons with Rachel as time permits. Her personality is very warm and personable and her commitment to helping others pursue their music goals really shines through. I consider Rachel to be a very well rounded musician and a master at her craft. I admire her musicianship and hope to attain her level of confidence and abilities as I pursue my own musical journey!!!

Pat is a fantastic instructor. For someone like me who has a very busy schedule, he is always flexible on when we meet, how the pay is handled, and which direction I want to take the instruction. Because he is so diversified in his musical knowledge, he can instruct you not only HOW the music is played, but also WHY it is played the way it is, which in my opinion is far more important.

Less important from the instructor perspective but is something I highly value in any teacher, is that he is very well mannered and easy to talk to. This makes the piano lessons low stress, and fun.
