Luke P.

Winston Salem, NC

Come one, come all! Time to learn the guitar! If you have been playing for many years and want to break out of a rut, or if you just got your first guitar and suspect that there is a better way to learn than trying to sort through the haphazard offerings on youtube, I welcome you. Sign up for a lesson and come on over. I think we will have fun and you be happy to find yourself learning to play this great instrument. Stick around and you will be surprised at how far you can take it.

About Luke

I majored in music at Berea College, then went on to The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I completed a Masters degree in guitar performance and served as the graduate assistant to the guitar department.

For the past ten years I have earned a living performing and teaching guitar. I am a certified Suzuki instructor, and I've held teaching positions at Winston Salem State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, along with at least half a dozen other schools and institutions. I've been featured on other artists' records, and received a gra
nt to release an album of my own songs. I regularly perform in a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

I love to teach, and over the years I have taught hundreds, maybe even thousands of lessons. Having learned something from each and every one of my students, I am now at a point where I excel at honing in on the individual interests and learning styles of whoever comes to me for help. There are many ways to learn guitar. The best one is the one that engages and inspires you the most. That said, there are also music fundamentals that we all need to know. My joy as a teacher lies in finding a way for you to master the fundamentals while at the same time following your personal bliss and intuition. We plot the course together, combining your curiosity and enthusiasm with my years of experience.

I also love working with kids. While they are having fun jamming, I discretely provide them with the technique and musicianship they'll need to excel in any musical environment, whether it's conservatory study or playing in a great band.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your enthusiasm is the key to your success, so my lessons are tailored to the interests and abilities of each student. That said, my classical background and dedication to effective teaching inform everything I do.

All of my students learn Music Fundamentals:
-Technique (habits of movement)
-Theory (how music works)
-Aural skills (hearing pitches, chords and rhythms clearly)

Many of my students use books. There are hundreds of great books these days, and I will work with students from any book they choose. Listed here are the books I regularly use. They all deliver great results:

-Aaron Shearer "Leaning The Classic Guitar"
-Will Schmidt and Greg Koch "The Hal Leonard Method"
-Joe Pecoraro "Read This First"
-David Oaks "Music Reading For Guitar"
-William Leavitt "A Modern Method For Guitar"
-Mateo Carcassi "Melodic and Progressive Studies, Opus 60"
-Leo Brouwer "Simple Studies"

Many of my students prefer to work without a book, and that is a great option too. These students learn scales, chords and theory and develop a repertoire of songs. I will show you how to play any song you'd like to learn. You can also work on writing your own songs or compositions, or improvising in any context, be it jazz, blues, Indian raga or flamenco.

Singing is also encouraged!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: music stands, extensive library of all kinds of music, great sound system and ability to stream any song, several guitars, recording equipment, footstools, keyboard and percussion instruments.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I'll bring my guitar and books, accessories as needed.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in versatility. I regularly play gigs doing classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and world music. All of these genres have a place in my heart, and I've devoted years to learning to play and teach them well.

I am equally polyamorous when it comes to the various things musicians do. I love to sing pop songs, dissect jazz lines, delve into expressive groupings with classical pieces, drill scales and arpeggios, you name it. Reading, improvising, composing and notating, transcribing and playing by ear, memorization, classical technique, blues technique, bluegrass technique, theoretical analysis... hit me up for any of that, or whatever else interests you.

Willy M.

Winston Salem, NC

I've been teaching guitar for over 10 years and my students have gone on to be musicians, some even worship leaders and some just play for fun. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play a few chords and as time goes on you'll be able to develop the intricacies of finger picking and rhythmic changes. I specialize in blues music and especially open tunings, typically use Hal Leonard and Mel Bay books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: amplifiers, recording equipment, effects pedals and acoustic and electric guitars. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Willy

Willy has been teaching music for more than a decade, carrying on the tradition he learned when his father taught him piano as a youth. He is a multi-instrumentalist with a degree in music from Earlham College in historic Richmond, IN (the birthplace of recorded jazz, and home of 30s era Genette Records).

As a sound technician Willy gained valuable experience working at the world famous Tarry Town Music Hall near Sleepy Hollow, NY, where he worked with top notch touring bands like Blues Traveler, the Indigo Girls, Paul Shaffer, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the late, great Levon Helm. He al
so worked with A-list actors such as Stanley Tucci, James Cahn, Kevin Bacon and Keanu Reeves.

While living in Austin, TX, Willy was a member of the American Federation of Musicians alongside greats like Los Lonely Boys, George Straight, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.

As a published author, Willy has published two books about open D tuning for the mandolin: "Dead Man's Tuning Vol. 1" and Dead Man's Tuning: Christmas Edition."

As a father of four young children, Willy teaches in a family friendly environment. Willy offers group lessons, called the Stringed Instrument Workshop, for all ages. At the SIW events, he has taught elementary students as well as adults all the way up to 86 years old! Willy is a background checked teacher and would love to pass on his knowledge of music to you and your family!

I wasn't really taking mandolin, but fiddle in the Stringed Instrument Workshop, but I loved it. Willy is a great teacher. I especially enjoyed the SIW, with my kids. It was a lot of fun to learn musical techniques with lots of people of different skill levels. I'm not the best musician, but Willy makes you feel like you can participate even if you don't understand all of the theory.

The Stringed Instrument Workshop last year was really fun because almost everyone in the group won some different musical freebies from different music stores nearby. We had a cookout and a concert, and both of my children were able to perform in front of the class. Willy set up a stage, lights and a sound system for us all to feel like we were stars! It was such a fun time, and we even had hotdogs and marshmallows!

I loved the Stringed Instrument Workshop so much, I had him teach my kids private lessons too, and they love it.

I loved taking lessons with Willy. I am only 7, and I am just learning, but am starting to play the Charlie Brown theme song. I can also play a little bit of Shorten Bread. There's another song too. It's a song that I learned that I really liked, can't remember the words, but it's a good song. I love piano lessons.

Wes C.

Kernersville, NC

I've been teaching guitar since July of 2013 and have worked with students of all different ages (kids and adults). I love seeing students progress as they learn and continue improving! I'm all about showing them just how fun guitar can be! I'm here to teach, help out, and encourage!

About Wes

My name is Wes C. I've been playing acoustic guitar since August of 2012. I have picked up much faster than I ever thought I would, and I love seeing others learn as well. I have a blast seeing people progress, but I am also in need of some money at the moment with being a college student. I try and keep things as cheap as I can and I will most definitely use every minute of each lesson to help progress the students further along. I'm all about having fun during this time, no pressure at all. I'm here to teach, help, and encourage!

Jason M.

Thomasville, NC

Learn to play the guitar today in a judgment-free zone. I will help patiently guide you through the fretboard and get you playing chords and playing some of your favorite songs in no time. My approach will vary depending on the student’s current level and personal objectives. Some of what we will cover include: Demystifying the fretboard, or what I like to call, the anatomy of the fretboard; chord building and structure, which will go hand-in-hand with deepening your understating of music theory (this will help you understand why things work or are arranged the way they are); and chord inversions, which really helps with leading tones and creating great sounding harmony. Some of these topics can be a bit challenging, but I will help to break them down into small bite-size chunks and make learning easy and fun. Don't wait - Let's start playing today!

About Jason

Music has always been a passion of mine. Even from my early childhood, I could remember how music transformed my life in more ways than I could imagine. Research shows us how music has so many benefits so as to impact our emotional state, our memory recall, and even our mental capacities or cognition. I was about 13 years old when I first picked up the guitar. Soon after, I started on the electric and bass guitar. I have played in rock bands and church groups on and off for many years. When I started college, I was however more focused on the piano, general music theory and composition. My tea
ching style is very laid back and judgement free. I tend to tailor my approach to the specific learning style of the individual. Till this day, I enjoy playing music and find it to be a great respite from the challenges of life. I welcome the opportunity to share with you the joy and wonders of music.

One of the lasting joys of life is being able to sit down in your living room alone and play your guitar or keyboard. And you can play for the rest of your life. Now that is a bargain. Jason Menagio can help you make that dream come true with his passion for playing and teaching. Once you get that wonderful feeling of accomplishment that accompanies learning to play music, just like a hole in one on the golf course, no one can take it away. I have taught for 50 years and recognize in Jason a unique ability to not only teach the fundamentals, understand the psychology behind it, but also to feel the passion of music. That sets him apart.
