Tricia Y.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Tricia

My passion is teaching music to students of all ages and all levels; sharing with them the joy of music. Music has the capacity to open up our hearts and minds to unknown worlds and cultures; thereby enabling us to express ourselves in unique and individualized ways. Music is not solely about learning the notes, or conquering Rachmaninoff or Grieg; each song is a melody of the heart, and should be navigated as such. When I teach lessons my students learn technique, structure and theory, but also voicing, expression, and interpretation.

I graduated from Multnomah University in December 20
11 with a Bachelors degree in Music. I specifically studied instrumentation (piano), vocalization, performance, conducting and composition.

I love music, I have since I was a little girl. From a very young age I loved that music took me and my imagination to worlds untold and it never mattered if I spoke German, Italian, French or Spanish, I could play the songs of those countries, and then it was like stepping into another world. This joy and excitement about music is what still carry with me as I continue my music career. And this is precisely what you can expect I will teach my students as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
The world of music is such a fun and joyous adventure, and this is only the beginning! Students can expect a lot of laughter and an enthusiastic and fun teaching style. As a piano and vocal teacher, I develop a curriculum for each student that is individualized in his or her specific learning style. I believe that students learn at their own pace, enabling me to learn with them while helping them find out what they love about music. The talents I bring to my students include a strong dedication to the art of teaching, commitment and loyalty to the them and a willing ear to listen. I can also offer my substantial experience with teaching music, a love for learning, and a personable non - confrontational teaching style. I am dedicated, punctual and hard working.
After six months of lessons students can expect to know their notes, being able to read music on their own. They will mostly likely have completed their first book and major song, and will have good momentum to get them going on their next musical story.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio with piano, music stands, mirror, recording devices (minimum) and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***

Excellent, Professional Teacher

Miss Tricia is an absolutely wonderful music instructor. I'm an adult student learning to develop my voice, and she is able to quickly identify the problems in my vocal technique and help me improve. Her lesson plans keep me on task and develop my tool sets. She's also great with explaining the theory behind the music and introducing me to different works and styles of music. Though I'm not receiving piano instruction from her myself, I have heard her work and watched her instruction, and I am highly impressed by both. She gets my highest recommendation.

Eric E.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Eric

Hey there! I'm excited you dropped by my profile. I'm even more excited that you are thinking about taking music lessons or are planning on giving the gift of music lessons to a loved one. A little bit about me so you can understand how my teaching benefits my students: I went to DePaul University in Chicago,IL and studied Music (voice) and Religious Studies. I have been teaching guitar, voice, banjo, drum and piano lessons professionally for three years, however, I've been teaching on and off again for over ten. Through that time I've taught diverse groups of people, all with different skil
l levels. No matter where you are on your musical journey or who you are, I can help get you where you want to go!I also have extensive experience as a professionally touring musician. I currently front and manage my band The Northern Skies. If you are looking to start playing with a band, professionally or otherwise, I can help you on that path. Remember: it doesn't matter what skill level you are now! I can help you get there!

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that every lesson should be fun and comfortable! Depending on the students age and skill level, I pick out books that work for each student, and also ask the student to bring in a piece that they want to work on. Maybe we can learn that new radio hit or the oldie but a goodie that you've been wanting to learn for years! However, learning from books or internet videos alone do not offer the kind of one on one attention students need while learning an instrument. I have the experience needed and a unique curriculum that is based off of understanding the student's musical goals. For beginners, I teach basic techniques and chords through easy songs to get the student playing as soon as possible.Learning music has to be fun! I am a very laid back and believe that learning music involves good communication, having an open mind, and the desire to have fun and LEARN! So I can be very laid back while interacting with students and their families. However, learning to play an instrument takes a lifetime of practice. Even the pros practice every day! Therefore, practice is a vital part of taking lessons and something I take very seriously. I hope you will choose me as your music teacher!

*** Studio Equipment ***
The teacher's home studio lessons are taught in a downstairs home office/music room. The home includes electric guitars, bass, amps, acoustic guitars, classical acoustic guitar, drum set, electric piano and books. Seating is available. Wireless internet is available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide the programming. I expect students to provide their own instrument and to buy the required materials (e.g. book if applicable)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching students guitar, voice, and banjo. However, I am able to teach a wide range of instruments because of my education and experience as a professional musician.

Elizabeth B.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Elizabeth

I am an up-and-coming classically trained singer living in Grand Rapids, MI with a passion for teaching. My goal is to help my students become good musicians while sharing the joy and love of music with them. I have a Bachelor of Music from Grand Valley State University in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts in Voice Performance. From humble beginnings, I have maintained a busy studio since 2011. Since then, I have helped dozens of students excel and grow as singers several of whom have gone on to study music in college.

I hold membership in
the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Sigma Alpha Iota and have applied for membership to Michigan School Vocal Music Association. Through these organizations, my students have the opportunity to perform and be adjudicated by other music professionals, they also have the opportunity to compete for scholarships.

**** Due to time constraints and construction traffic in Grand Rapids, I am no longer able to offer lessons from your home ****

~What can you expect in our lessons?~

I strive to help my students become independent musicians as well as more confident singers. We work diligently to create healthy, well supported sounds. Whether we are working on classical music or pop music, it is all rooted in the same techniques. I emphasize proper breathing, support, posture, resonance, clarity, pure tone, power without pushing, and building vocal range.

Before every lesson I like to touch base with my students to make sure the concepts we discussed previously are understood. I also like to keep tabs on each students individual goals and how their progress aligns with their goals. By taking a few brief moments before every lesson to discuss these things, I am able to tailor each lesson to the students needs.

We will always start by warming up. I use exercises designed to target the specific areas I've outlined above. From there, we will work on building technical skills based on the students need and skills.

Please note:

***We will not work on songs until the student is comfortable reading basic solfege melodies.***

We will work extensively on the use of solfege until the student is comfortable reading music. This can take a month or more depending the students abilities and practice habits.

After the student is comfortable with solfege and reading music, we will find repertoire that will provide appropriate challenges and opportunities for both growth and success. I always welcome input from students for styles they would like to sing.

I especially love working with beginning students helping them build their technique, learn about music, and find their voice. Some of my most successful students have had no experience singing before taking voice lessons.

~What styles will we work on?~

My training has been centered in classical music but I also am an avid lover of Jazz, Musical Theater, and Singer/Song Writer, Folk, and Pop music.

~Lessons in my studio~

I have an electric keyboard, computer with printer, and a sitting area for parents to observe while their children are working and learning. My studio is also pet-free.

I have learned a lot and have had a lot of fun studying with Elizabeth. She is kind, knowledgable and helpful. I really wanted to work on reading music because it had been a long time since I've sung. She was very patient with me! She always makes our lessons fun but challenges me to always do my best. After working with her for a few months I felt more confident and tried out for a solo with my choir, which I got! I would highly recommend Elizabeth to anyone who wants to work on reading music and learning how to sing better. She's the best.

I have been taking lessons with Elizabeth for the last 6 months and I couldn't be happier. Elizabeth is a wonderful teacher. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about singing and teaching. Elizabeth designs classes around my strengths and weakness in order to help me to become the best singer I can be. Although she critiques the things I do incorrectly, she also praises me for what I do correctly. When she critiques my singing, she pairs it with singing exercises and warm ups to correct what I'm doing wrong. My singing has improved so much and I have become so confident in my singing that members of my church choir have complimented me. Also, I am buying several lessons with Elizabeth for my mom as a Christmas present. I have learned so much from Elizabeth and I look forward to continuing my classes. Thank you, Elizabeth for being an amazing teacher!

I am 62. About 2 years ago I started singing karaoke when we go out with our friends on Saturday nights. My voice needs a lot of help, so I am very limited to what I can sing, and what I do sing is just okay.
Kelsey is patient, and as part of my lesson, i was to list songs as part of my goal. She picked out a couple of them for me to work on to improve my overall singing. Each week she would pick out areas of the song and tell me what I need to do to umprove on it. I have quite a ways to go, lots of bad habits to correct, but I have been able to apply what I have learned so far to songs that I have already been doing and to other songs that I wouldnt have considered before I started 3 1/2 months ago.
Kelsey is a great teacher, and I really look forward to my lessons.

Coming in as never having any singing background, Kelsey has taught me that I can actually sing and that I can sing a lot higher than I ever thought I could. YAY!!! I'm a visual learner, and Kelsey uses a lot of visual techniques with teaching me how to sing. That, in return, has helped me to catch on a lot quicker.
