Kelvin L.

Bolingbrook, IL

"Experienced fiddle performer and teacher of 25 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of fiddle perform skills. I specialize in blue grass, Celtic music typically use Celtic selection album and all level blue grass music books.

About Kelvin

I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University
of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I strongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

My 13 yo niece took video editing/production lessons from Kelvin. He kept her interested & engaged. He explained things well & in a way that she could clearly understand. She was eager to do the homework he gave her and to go to the next class. I recommend Kelvin highly. He's a fantastic teacher.

Mr. Kelvin began teaching my daughter when she was 4 yrs old...a year later she is able to recite notes and integrate and apply her knowledge of music theory to her music pieces. Mr. Kelvin is very enthusiastic every practice, but most importantly he is VERY patient and adaptable to my young daughter's mood...especially for a 5yr old who has a small attention span.

Elizabeth is an artist at heart. She's very patient and kind. I highly recommend her!

I came to Elizabeth as an adult student with a few years of experience in playing, but with a lot of doubts about whether I could advance. I'd previously taken lessons at the Music Institute of Chicago (Evanston campus), but I didn't like how they did things over there. They are extremely overpriced for what they offer. In my first lesson there, my teacher wouldn't even let me pick up the bow and she made me play Twinkle Twinkle over and over again...

Elizabeth made playing very relaxing. Her approach is just to attack the material without any hesitations. And if you make a mistake, just do it again. She let me pick out the repertoire, which made me excited to play, and offered great recommendations on material that would help my playing. Sometimes I was too ambitious and she'd be the first to point out that maybe I wasn't ready for a piece just yet. Then she'd recommend something else that would help me get there.

Elizabeth teaches from her home and it's pretty easy to get to by train, bus, or car.

We love Ms. Brown!

Ms. Brown is professional and kind, which is a wonderful way to learn a new skill like playing the violin. My daughters were taught by her years ago as young children and then we lost track of her. When we found her on TakeLessons, we signed up, willing to drive miles for her instruction. She is thorough, clear in instruction and so even tempered. What a great teacher!

David S.

Chicago, IL

Fiddle Lesson's with me are based on what the student wishes to accomplish. I can help with improvisation, bow technique, and repertoire choices.

About David

Hello,
My name is David S. and I am 22 years old. Thank you for visiting my profile! I am originally from Aurora, IL but currently live in Chicago in the Buena Park area. I am a recent graduate of DePaul University where I received my Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance. There I studied with Stephen Balderston, former assistant principal of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

I began my piano studies* in a Yamaha Piano studio at age five and continued private lessons for eight years. Then I shifted my attention to the cello, which I started in a public school when I was in fourth grade. I
began my violin and viola studies in high school during a period I broke my wrist and couldn't hold my cello with a cast!

*I attribute my versatility as a string player to my many years of piano training.

I was recently awarded a full time position with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the rest of my time is devoted to my students and freelance work around the city.

My experience as a teacher is extensive. I have been teaching since I was in eighth grade, which was almost ten years ago! Please see my teaching experience below.

I am NOT certified in the Suzuki method and I have no future plans to do so. I respect the ideals of the Suzuki method, but I cannot relate as I was trained at a much later age and with different books and methods. However, I concentrated on Pedagogy at DePaul, where I took numerous classes to prepare me for working with students of all ages and levels. Please see “certification.”

On the side, I am also a fiddle player with the Century Air Minstrels, a folk music group specializing in Civic War Music.

Silvia S.

Chicago, IL

About Silvia

I have been teaching since I was 17 years old, so this has become a passion very dear to me. I manage to engage and motivate my students in each lesson, by providing them with the guidance they need, and making it enjoyable and fun rather than tedious . Learning so much from great teachers have changed my life and approach to music, so I feel honored I can now do the same with my own students, encouraging them to improve and develop new skills that will take them to the next level in the process of learning.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to use the Suzuki method for beginners, combined with E
ssential Elements. Etude and Scale books are also helpful. All these can build a solid technique that will allow students to express themselves and communicate through music. As I go along with a student, I use a variety of materials that will suit each individual the best, since not everyone learns in the same way. Besides Classical music, I teach other genres such as country, jazz and latin music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music stand, Chairs, Piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a metronome, tuner and music, I expect students to have a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I mostly teach classical violin and viola, but I have taught fiddle before, jazz, pop, country and Latin music styles. I know of methods that will help students explore different genres of music.

a patient and knowledgeable teacher

I am an older adult who is taking violin lessons for fun. Silvia was a remarkable teacher. First of all her ability to detect when I was a teeny bit out of tune was freaky! She has an amazing ear. She has a toolbox of techniques to help learn a new piece. And did I mention her patience? I am sad that we are no longer in the same region so that I can continue to take lessons from her.

I did go to several performances of hers and master classes she participated in and am in awe of her talent.

I believe she would be an excellent teacher for just about anyone wanting to learn to play strings and I recommend her whole heartedly.

Fantastic Teacher!

I studied with Silvia Suarez over the summer of 2013 for 7 weeks, and I improved so much because of how helpful she was! She always knew how to take my playing to a higher level than before. Wether it was a better bowing/fingering, or my phrasing, her suggestions were always so helpful. I'm very glad I got the chance to study with her over the summer; I wouldn't be the same player without her help. I highly suggest taking from her, you will not regret it!
