Ryan B.

Saint Louis, MO

About Ryan

Hello, my name is Ryan B. I appreciate the responsibility, dedication and hard work that comes along with being a music teacher. To me nothing is more rewarding than the students improvement and their personal feelings of success.

Since I have learned how to play a variety of instruments over the course of several years, I have learned how to gather and utilize skills and techniques that I have learned from many great musicians. That means I can take these diverse skills and pass them on to my students! And I am very good at finding just what the student needs to expand their musical horizo
ns.

Training:

-I have been playing a variety of musical instruments (examples are guitar, piano, trombone, saxophone, trumpet, flute, and many more) for seven years
-I am very familiar with the different styles of American music and its history. I have taken music theory courses 1-4.
-I have received two years of private piano lessons

Accomplishments and awards:

-I have performed with six different jazz combinations at St. Louis Community College over the course of two years.
-I have been giving private music lessons for three years.
-I have preformed with international touring artists.
-I received an award for outstanding achievement in jazz improvisation in the Spring of 2012 from St. Louis Community College

Recent achievements- My tenor saxophone student Jay Palamad just got 2nd place out of 40 other students in his all suburban audition!

My alto student Logan Page was just awarded 1st chair at his high school band audition

Schools:

-Graduate of Parkway South High School, year 2006
-I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very personable and relaxed teacher, I also have very high confidence in the potential of my students. I give individually tailored music lessons because everyone learns differently. I use beginner to intermediate Hal Leonard and Real Easy books for saxophone, flute, piano trumpet and trombone (occasionally I use hannon exercises for piano).

I have developed some of my own unique musical exercises as well. I believe that after a couple of weeks my students will find that they are having more success and fun with practicing, playing, and performing. I am great with kids and I also cater to special needs students.

I am always interested in my student's musical background and personal interests. The first lesson would consist of assessing the student's present skills/talents, their short term and long term goals as well as introducing technique exercises and determining a song, or songs, to master (apply things learned during lessons). I encourage and set goals for every lesson, so practicing on your own is very important!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have an IPad with an I real book application. With this I can have an entire rhythm section to back myself and my students while we are practicing sight reading and Jazz improvisation. I also can provide a metronome, electric piano, music stands, instrument stands, and some sheet music.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have his or her own instrument. I can provide a metronome, music stand, instrument stands, and some sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
I have experience teaching jazz, blues, rock, reggae, Afro beat and funk.

It's not easy to find a harmonica teacher. Ryan has been very reliable. He is flexible with his teaching style and my son really looks forward to his lessons. We bought 5 classes. We finished the last one yesterday. We are taking a break for the end of the school year but will keep Ryan in mind for future lessons.

David M.

Saint Louis, MO

About David

Composer and guitarist David began formal music training at the age of 5 on the drums. He taught himself guitar as a teenager and began playing in local rock bands. Initially entering college as a Journalism major, his passion for music led him to Meramec College where he studied Music Theory with Robert C. Howard and classical guitar with Larry Bolles. From 1990 through 1993, he attended Webster University, and became only the second composer in the school's history to receive the BM/MM Scholarship. While at Webster, he studied composition with Dr. Kendall Stallings, Robert Chamberlin, and K
im Portnoy, Jazz History with Paul Demarinis, and 18th Century Counterpoint with Dr. Eloise Jarvis. During his education, he performed with many student ensembles and sat in on master classes by the great sitarist and surbaharist, Imrat Khan and jazz guitarist Peter Leitch.

In 1993 he started St. Louis SoundWorks with Grammy nominated Adam Long and Mark McClanahan that specialized in mobile recording, and composing music for films and commercials.

As a musician, David has composed over 200 pieces for various instruments and combinations from small chamber ensembles to full orchestra. He was bandleader of two creative ensembles that focused on alternative notation compositions and improvised music, and later co-founded the avant-garde influenced rock band Diverted Course which released two CD's.

As a teacher, David has taught classical guitar and musicianship as an adjunct faculty member at Meramec College and Webster University. He has given seminars on the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Anthony Braxton. He has been teaching privately for 23 years and many of his students have gone on to successful music careers and performed all over the world.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students of all ages in a fun and positive manner. I am flexible and will tailor the lessons to satisfy your own individual goals. Whether you are a beginner that wants to gain a foundation in technique, sight reading, and basic theory or an intermediate or more advanced player that wants to increase their knowledge and polish their skills, I will devise a plan to meet your needs. I teach a variety of styles including classical guitar, blues, rock, jazz, and avant-garde.

I've been learning songwriting and music theory from David and it couldn't be any better. He's very professional and personable, and he makes sure to work with you, not above you. He shows a genuine enthusiasm for his students' musical interests and formulates instruction around them. David encourages questions, which creates a comfortable and effective teacher-student interaction. Between my weekly lessons, I find myself impatiently counting down the days until my next scheduled lesson. While the genre of songwriting that I've been working on with David's guidance has been contemporary Christian, I'm sure that he would be an effective teacher in any genre, whether the student were writing songs or playing them.

After the initial panic of trying to learn something at such a ripe old age I was reassured by other reviews that David would be the best bet. They were correct and I recommend him to any age group. After a welcome at the front door assuring me that I was at the right location, he excels in making you feel comfortable. He listens to questions and told me no question was stupid. Takes everything at your speed and recaps from the week before. Is thorough and stops you when finger placement is not correct so you don't begin bad habits. Looks up and acquaints himself with the songs that you want to learn and will stop covering a certain area if you do not want to learn it. He sends you home with just the right amount of practice work and after 3 lessons I feel like I'm getting all of what he's teaching and am improving and adding on more lessons. So happy that I chose David.

My Outstanding Journey

I can't say enough about what I have learned over the past year. To be able to play the gift of music and understand the foundation of it's existence, is truly an edifying experience. My instructor has been absolutely fabulous. His patience, knowledge and his keen ability to translate his knowledge to the specific level of understanding of his students, is nothing short of great. Kudos to you all for having the resident talent to make my, and others, dreams of learning to play music a reality.

Best of wishes to all this upcoming New Year.

Me Boyer arrived on time. My daughter was very excited to meet him and get started. Since she had previously had lessons I was very impressed by his first question of "would you like to show me what you know?" I very much like the way Mr Boyer interacted with my daughter. More importantly, she likes Mr Boyer!

Bill is such a great teacher and truly loves to teach. He shows patience, kindness and has a real talent he shares with his students. My daughter was a mediocre piano player until Bill started to teach her, the transformation is amazing . The other day while my daughter was taking a lesson I was on the phone. The person could hear the piano playing and asked who was playing? I told her it was my daughter. The lady was very complimentary and before we ended the conversation she told me again to tell my daughter how beautifully she played.

Our boys (ages 12 and 14) have had Bill as their piano teacher a total of 3 years, two years in the beginning until he relocated out of the area, and now we are back with him since his return. He challenges and encourages them in their piano studies, in both piano performance and theory, and he is a very accomplished musician himself. We couldn't be more pleased to have Bill instruct our boys.

I have known Vinnie for quite a few years now and have gotten to jam with him a couple times at the music shop he used to work at. Not only is he an incredible player, but an amazing teacher as well. If you are looking to learn theory, phrasing, or just fun riffs to jam to, this is the only teacher you will need.
