In 10 years of teaching the bass, I've guided students from their first encounter with the instrument through professional performance and college study. I love teaching the bass because playing the bass ties together so many fundamental elements of music in every genre.
I have a degree in Jazz Performance on the double bass from NYU and have performed professionally in many styles from jazz to classical, rock, soul, funk, merengue, and everything in between. Studying the bass with me can be as focused or as broad as needed for each student. I enjoy all of my lessons, learning each and every baseline on Sgt Pepper's, focusing on reading skills and music theory, or improvising walking bass lines over jazz standards. I always focus on the goals of my students and how best to build a true understanding of the instrument, it's role in an ensemble, and the tradition of the music.
I'm a professional jazz bassist, also adept in many other styles, although the bow is not my expertise. Frequent topics include right hand jazz technique, left hand technique, posture, thumb position technique, time/pulse, bass line concepts and improvisation.
First I will ask you some basic questions. Then I will immediately begin sharing information / training you. The fastest road to your success is my goal.
Together in our lessons, we will work on the fundamentals of bass using music you like and want to learn. Eventually, you will be able to figure out songs on your own and we can use music theory to look at them more in-depth. I can teach rock, pop, and jazz, and everything in between. We will use material from Chuck Sher’s “The Improvisers Bass Method”, various Hal Leonard transcription books, “The Real Book” and many more.
