I teach all styles of Bass, including sight reading, ear training and theory. I can get you going fast if you're a beginner and take you through intermediate levels and beyond. I've been playing, teaching and gigging on bass for over 40 years. I also encourage you to bring the songs you want to work on into the lessons.

About Cory

So you want to play an instrument? Well I have taught for over 40 years and have developed special programs for you on piano, guitar, bass, voice and other instruments for you to learn. From easy beginner to the most advanced, I will help you to learn the songs you love! Whether we use the most modern technology in my professional recording studio or just some chords or perhaps learning to sight read something for a talent show, I can take you all the way to the highest performance level. Your goals are my goals.
I have studied with some of the most famous teachers in the world, includi
ng Charlie Parker's pianist Walter Bishop Jr. and Dizzy Gillespie's musical director Mike Longo, among many others.

I have performed on piano, guitar and bass and vocals with famous stars and some really great bands which will help me answer many of your questions. I am currently still working, teaching and recording all the time. I also have a professional recording studio in my home which you can take full advantage of.

First of all, he is very thorough. Cory is always thinking outside the box, brings new ideas to the table! He is not only a teacher, but a musician performer as well. When he teaches, he implements performance and teaches not only to play the instrument but to sound good. He is personable and direct. He is also very tolerant regardless of my blindness. I've had other instructors, and by far, Cory is the best!

i was so stressed out as my son, a musician, asked me to sing with him at his wedding. yikes!! Boy, did I luck out when I randomly picked Cory for some quick singing lessons. He was so encouraging and helpful!! By the end of 5 lessons we made a recording of the song I am to sing. Well it looks like I won't humiliate myself or family. It was really amazing. He has incredible "in studio"effects and easily transferred the song to a key I could practice and actually "sing." I haven't "performed" yet (next week) but I am looking forward to it, thanks to Cory. Everyone should have at least "one" song that they can pull off for special events. Totally worth it!! Thanks to Cory I have if I could only learn to "shake my groove thang."

Cory is an excellent teacher. His lessons are a blast. He's done a great job of assessing my existing musical knowledge and goals for learning the harmonica, and customizing the lessons to allow me to learn quickly (as well as improve my grasp of theory in a fun and practical way).

I'd highly recommend him for anyone considering harmonica lessons (or lessons with one of the many other instruments he teaches).

About Edwin

Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.

I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 17 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.

I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.

Other subjects taught include bass guitar, piano/keyboard, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, harmonium, classical percussion, mu
sic theory, composition(all styles from pop to classical), ear training, and studio production/engineering/mixing.

Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunity to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.

During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.

My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

Every one of you is unique and there are many possible paths to reach your goals in music.

With my background and music industry experience, I am able to customize my lessons for you so that you can reach your desired goals. We will take some time to find out where your passion lies in music and I will use my experience and knowledge to create a customized lesson-plan that will allow us to focus on reaching your desired goals and at the same time maintain a well rounded music education.

I find this to be key in making the lessons and your practice sessions very enjoyable, fun and laid back - knowing that everything we practice, play and talk about is in line with your goals as a student.

I will also be playing along with you and demonstrating everything that we're working on - music is meant to be shared and played with others and it is important to have that experience of interaction from early on in your lessons.

So whether it's learning to accompany yourself or others, write songs, read music, understand harmony, solo, or just jam out to your favorite songs, you will be well on your way to reaching your goals within 6 months of my lessons.

Look forward to making music with you!

Have been taking lesson from Edwin for about a month. He has really helped me adjust to learning an instrument without any musical experience at all.
Patience of a saint, really knows what he is doing. He has come up with a way to teach me at my own pace and level of understanding, yet ever so slightly helps push me to the next lesson. My confidence stays high!
I can not recommend Edwin enough, his style of helping me learn is top notch.

Jan P.

Los Angeles, CA

For over 10 years Jan has helped bass students attain proficiency on the instrument by developing their sense of time, their knowledge of scales and chords so that they can effectively write a bass line in a band situation, and their general musicianship and music theory. A good mixture between learning songs and specific exercises geared to the student's needs, combined with frequent writing and recording opportunities, will fuel your inspiration to want to practice and progress on the bass guitar.

About Jan

Learning an instrument in a music recording studio environment has many advantages and is a lot more fun, creative and rewarding. From your teacher jumping on different instruments
for you to develop your independence and timing as a player and
recording prepared projects you've been working on,
to playing at a higher volume to get to know your gear's real sound, the rocking' memories you'll walk away with will fuel your inspiration to practice and improve fast.

My focus is to help you achieve your goals on your instrument.

With each individual student, I offer exercises, songs and t
echniques to practice that will help you to immediately begin seeing positive results. I believe that anyone can play an instrument and take their next step in music. It makes a big difference if you have the right teacher to help you learn the music you love. Most people that have attained musical proficiency had someone that took the time to guide them along their way. Much of what is thought of as difficult to play or understand in music is only mysterious until it is explained and practiced.

Jan has been teaching professionally since 2001. He graduated with honors from Musicians Institute in Hollywood after earning a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and IT in Germany. He has been playing music for over 24 years, in bands ever since age 16 as a lead guitarist, bass player and singer. In his newest band he is on drums and vocals. He built a music recording studio in the city in 2004 at which he teaches and has engineered and mixed many bands since. He has also taught a guitar and band afterschool program at Brightstar Middle School Charter Academy in Los Angeles, fronts the band Audiocination, plays lead guitar in Clark 8, bass with Radius and drums with OG Booker T.

Drum kits, amplifiers, lots of electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, synthesizer, an old piano, a fully equipped professional music studio.

*** Specialties ***
I am mainly a funky rock and blues guitar player, and have been in bands on bass, drums and with my own project, Audiocination, on guitar and vocals. There are so many different styles that get mixed into rock that I find it important to introduce my students to a lot of them, so they can find the one that suits them best.

Super Happy

I am currently a drum student of Jan's and I couldn't be happier. He is a really great teacher. He obviously cares a lot about what he does and he is very good at understanding what each student needs individually to keep moving forward at a pace that is right for the student. He strikes an excellent balance between keeping the fun part of music alive (playing music!) and making sure that you receive solid technique instruction as well. He is super excellent at helping you understand how the things you are learning will build together over time (this helps a lot when some things are frustrating to make your body and mind do at first). You do have to do some exercises, but his focus is all related to working towards having fun and playing music. If you're a drum student, even as you're getting your first beats down he plays guitar with you right away (the first lesson in my case). It's really terrific to get a feeling for what it's like to play with other people from the very beginning. I can be self conscious about doing things around other people before I feel like I know what I'm doing. Playing with him right from the beginning helped me toss that aside without it taking hold of me this time, because, well, it's pretty darn fun to be completely honest. If you take lessons from Jan I am pretty sure you will feel very fortunate, as I do, to have found such talented and supportive instructor.

my six year old grandson started his music lessons with Jan two month ago.Jan is an amazing teacher and extremely patient with kids- more of a friend/ teacher to my grandson who enjoys his lessons while learning fast and without pressure.I highly recommend Jan to anybody, young, medium, "old"...Jan enriches the takelessons community
HalbertR February 7, 2011

Speaking for Malcolm: Malcolm is enjoying the lesson sessions with Jan. Speaking for myself: I appreciate him always being timely and teaching my son by using the type of music that he is interested in. This helps him to stay interested and motivates him to practice.

Brian P.

Culver City, CA

About Brian

Brian discovered his talent and passion for teaching while still in college, and has been teaching guitar and piano in Southern California for over 20 years. Gifted at teaching students of all ages and abilities, he combines patience, creativity, imagination and boundless enthusiasm with solid professional training and experience. Brian also has over 10 years experience teaching piano and guitar to blind and autistic students.

A lifelong musician, Brian received his first musical training at the age of 4 and 5 years when his actor/singer Dad and musically talented Grandma taught him to si
ng and play the mandolin. He began piano lessons at age 5, and formal guitar instruction at the age of 10 years.

By the time he was a 14-year-old high school student, Brian was performing as lead guitarist in rock bands around Southern California, developing mastery of rock guitar and blues performance and improvisation. Brian went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.

Passionate about all kinds of music, Brian's studies include choral music and conducting, Gregorian chant (at the Monastery of St. Pierre de Solesmes, France), and Master Classes with Andrés Segovia and Christopher Parkening. In 1984, he participated as a member of the Honor Choir for the ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which included recording of original music by Philip Glass for the Olympic Games under the direction of David L. Wolper and Mr. Glass.

As a jazz guitarist, Brian continues to grow musically in association with his colleagues of the Naomi Jazz Group, and other close musical friends who include students of the late, great Ted Greene.

I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

• the uniqueness of each student;
• the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;
• the importance of proper technique and an understanding of music theory to build self-confidence;
• the development of musicianship through performance.

My first interest with each new student is to discover how he or she learns, and then to apply appropriate teaching techniques to maximize their potential. I gear my lesson plans to the individual and strive to optimize the learning potential of the student.

In a lesson with me you can expect to never be bored, to laugh a lot, learn a lot, be positively engaged emotionally and challenged intellectually. I believe that learning is maximized when the student is enjoying the experience, and is faced with challenges appropriate to their skill level. I aim to make learning music fun, choosing musical selections to learn in the style and genre that relate to the student's interests and aspiration.

When my students perform in concerts, recitals, juries, auditions, recording sessions or simply for friends and family, they have self-confidence because they know precisely the "how" and "why" of everything required to perform well. My goal with students is to build a solid foundation in instrumental technique and thorough understanding of Music Theory at their appropriate level.

On a monthly basis, all my students practice performing pieces they are working on during the lesson time, with family/friends as an audience if desired and appropriate, and/or using digital recording to help the student develop a critical ear for their own playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music stands, guitar/s and guitar stands, Dynarelle cushion, footrests, Korg 88 fully--weighted digital keyboard, Zoom H4 digital recorder.

As well, I have guitars and equipment both for teaching and performance of various styles, as below. Students will have the opportunity to learn about, play and become familiar with any of these instruments/equipment according to their interests and skill levels.

CLASSICAL: Ramirez Model 1A Classical (professional concert level instrument)
Cordoba (teaching/practice instrument)
Hohner Acoustic (electric)

ROCK: Fender Stratocaster (pre-CBS)
Shechter Omen6
Shechter Elite Series C1

FOLK: Martin (steel string)

JAZZ: Oscar Schmidt by Washburn (hollow body electric)
Gibson SG (electric)

AMPS: Fender Twin reverb
Pevey practice amp
Rock amp

Boss GT8 Effects Pedal

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar stands, guitar/s, Zoom H4 digital recorder. Generally I do not transport my Korg 88 keyboard to the student's home for lessons, but I can if necessary. However, I do require that piano students have their own piano/keyboard or at least reliable access to one for practice between lessons.

Guitar students should also have their own guitar. I can advise on appropriate instruments and can help students find a suitable guitar for their learning level and price range.

Mauricio has been a perfect fit as a guitar teacher for my ten year old son who, until meeting Mauricio, was totally apathetic about learning an instrument. The list of discared wood winds, strings, & percussion is long... Now my kiddo looks forward to his lessons because of Mauricio. He practices (during the week!!!), and he walks away from his time with Mauricio with the kind of happy grin on his face typically reserved for video games and nachos. Mauricio is ever punctual, solicitous, accommodating, friendly, and kind. We feel very lucky to have him in our lives and couldn't recommend him more highly to others.

Mauricio is a very patient guitar instructor. The instruction my daughter received was her first experience playing any instrument. Her enthusiasm for each lesson was a reflection of Mauricio's enthusiasm to teach. Music is his passion and it was clear to me that his enthusiasm for music was evident in his instruction.
