*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a laid back teacher but you will definitely learn
a lot. I just believe if it starts to not be fun, what's the point? Music isn't just about perfect theory and note placement it's about enjoyment. That's why I tailor make every lesson specifically based on my student's goals. I have students that like a more traditional approach so I use standard method books with them. I also have students that want to learn how to play by ear so we use a less traditional method and I teach them chord structures and how to move around easily on their instrument. My favorite thing to teach is vocal lessons but I love teaching piano and guitar also.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught on an upright piano or acoustic/electric guitar. Student should bring own guitar. No pets. Waiting room out front for parents.

Carrie was a great teacher for my son! It takes a special kind of person to teach my son and she did a great job at it. Unfortunately Carrie had to move and we are not able to take more lessons with her but we really enjoyed the time we had together.

I do not typically provide any equipment - but I am willing to select and purchase books for the students to learn from (cost of books to be reimbursed by the student/parent) when requested to do so.

I am also willing to provide stick-on note-names for the keyboard, for young children.

The students must have their own instruments, and provide a folder for sheet music and notes/instructions.

Guitar, I specialize in the following styles: jazz, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass, and children's songs.
Piano: I prefer electronic keyboard to acoustic piano, but am happy to teach beginning students on a regular piano as well. I teach note-reading, playing by ear, and theory, with en emphasis on rock, pop, and folk music. I include arranging, chord theory, and use of the many features of an elec
tronic keyboard, in the lessons.
Bass Guitar: I teach rock, pop, funk, and country music on bass.
Banjo: I teach bluegrass, country, and some blues and rock music. I can also teach a bit of old-timey frailing/clawhammer style.
English and Reading: I am highly qualified, to tutor/teach English (spoken, written, and reading comprehension) to both native English speakers and to those learning it as a second language.

Linda is easily the most patient and welcoming person I've ever worked with. She has incredible knowledge over a vast array of topics and she is eager to share with others. This, in my opinion, is the most important quality of all teachers. Her lessons have proved a great way to build a solid base in my field of interest. as well as providing me with a well rounded and wonderful mentor that I'm sure to rely on for many other lessons in the future- banjo or otherwise!

Elizabeth K. instructs Vocal, Piano, and Guitar lessons at her home or the meeting place of choice for her students. She also has Skype available for lessons over the internet for out of town students.

Elizabeth has been singing since the age of four and had her first solo in church at eleven years old. With over 20 years of private instruction experience, and a Vocal Music Education with a Concentration in Performance degree, Elizabeth is an excellent instructor and performer.
She has directed and performed in off-Broadway musicals such as Grease, Oklahoma, and West Side Story, and has done costume make-up and design for many plays and musicals as well. She has also performed in several opera productions including Pirates of Penzance, Madam Butterfly, and Merry Widow with the San Antonio Opera, and continues to perform and help o
ut as needed with SA Opera and local production companies. Mrs. K performs on a regular basis at local churches and with different community groups. She also is hired on a regular basis as a wedding singer and funeral cantor.

I am interested in helping students struggling with math from basic algebra to calculus. When I was a computer science student, I took about 10 math classes; Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math I and II, Discrete Probability, Statistics and Continuous Probability, and Numeric Method on Digital Computing. I got good grades for all these classes. I enjoyed solving problems in math and often found myself taking the challenges of solving extra credit problems. It would be a very rewarding experience if I am able to share the process of solving math problems with others and help them improve their abilities to solve problems on their own.

I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. For additional studies I participated in Aspen Music School and Music Festival, Claude Elffere's Master
Class (Paris, France), Mozarteum Summer School and Music Festival (Salzburg, Austria) and Vienna Music Seminar (Vienna, Austria). I was awarded scholarship when I attended Cleveland Inctitute of Music and Aspen Music School. My teachers include Jinsook Kim, Donald Walker, Paul Schenly, Gabriel Chodos, Viktor Teuflmayr, Claude Elffere, Anne Epperson, and Vivian Hornik Weilestein.
Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. Recently I taught at Half Note Music School in Bellevue, WA and was a pianist at St. Columba's Episcopal Church and United Christian Church in Renton, WA.

I have been playing the violin for 37 years since I was 7 years old. I have an undergraduate, masters and doctorate degrees in health promotion and education. I currently work for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a public health educator. Matthew is very knowledgeable of the game. He is easily approachable and has the ability to connect with students of all skill levels as well as multiple generations. My teenage son was comfortable with him immediately and he is not always receptive to learning if the setting feels awkward to him. As for my own experience I received valuable insight into my own games after reviewing score sheets from tournament games and isolating those ever present blunders that seem to lurking on every chess board just waiting to be discovered. Anyway I give a hearty two thumbs up to my millennial friend.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.
