I have taught voice for over twenty years. I studied music at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I received my B.A. I currently work as a professional singer for various local opera companies, music theater groups, churches and temples. I am principal soprano for Opera A La Carte and have also soloed with Repertory Opera Company, Redlands Bowl Festival, Laguna Beach Chorale and Celestial Opera Company. I have worked extensively in Los Angeles schools performing musical assemblies for students in elementary and middle grades through Southland Opera, LA Opera and Guild Opera of Southern California. My teaching experience includes private voice lessons and master classes at Idyllwild School for the Arts.
*** Lesson Details *** I emphasize breathing techniques to free up the voice to expand your range and ease of singing. In
the lesson, we start with simple warm ups and vocalizes and then apply techniques to the songs you want to sing. I realize each student is different and I customize the lesson to the student's particular needs. I specialize in classical and music theater, however the basics of singing apply to all styles of music. In addition to working on breathing and technique for singing, we'll also focus on interpretation of the songs you are working on as well as how to overcome performance nervousness. Most students find that they are able to sing with more freedom, less tension and will have more confidence as they progress.
I also teach beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series.
*** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in the main room, upright piano
*** Travel Equipment *** They need to provide a piano or keyboard if I am going to their home. I have a piano in my home.
*** Specialties *** I work on using the breath as a fundamental technique for singing. Singing should never hurt. I use a lot of imagery to achieve freedom in singing.
I have years of experience performing live music, so I can teach students to have the confidence in performing in front of people.
Hello fellow and future musicians, and thanks for checking out my profile!
To tell you a little about myself, I was exposed to music at a very young age since my dad was a musician. I first picked up the drums at the age of 5, and took piano lessons for a year when I was 6. I later played the saxophone in 4th grade, and finally discovered the guitar when I was 9. (Ironic since my dad is a guitarist and the guitar was around the house forever!) He showed me my first chords and really got me started on the instrument, and I played in several local bands in high school playing a range of musical styles from rock, blues, funk, and reggae. I really didn't take music seriously until I was in college, and began studying under Jerry Coelho, a member of the very first graduating class of the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and
Dominic Castillo, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, who was a student of Jerry's as well. After studying under these talented musicians, I went on to pursue my education in music and received my BA in Music from San Jose State University in 2004. I started teaching music privately during my time with Jerry and Dominic and continued to teach during college up until the present, and have taught hundreds of students since. I now live in San Diego where I teach, work as a freelance musician, and play in local funk/jazz/rock group Science Fiction Jazz and gypsy/kickstomp outfit Quel Bordel!
*** Lesson Details *** I am a very easy going, friendly individual who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.
*** Studio Equipment *** Living Room: couches, table and TV, music stand, student can borrow instrument for first lesson, parents can sit in on lesson
*** Specialties *** My main musical styles that I perform and teach are rock, blues, jazz, funk, R&B, and reggae. I studied jazz in college so I also have extensive knowledge of jazz theory.

TEACHING OVERVIEW: Mary Frances has been teaching voice since 1987. She works with youth and adults, beginner and advanced. She helps voice students develop a natural, healthy, beautiful sound, proper placement and projection of the voice for singing and speaking. Her goal is to help singers gain fulfillment and joy while improving their art. She believes music should be fun and rewarding.
VOICE STUDENTS of hers have won university placement and scholarships and have been accepted into Allstate Chorus for High School
She also teaches PIANO. She has taught piano for about 10 years. She studied piano privately for 10 years and had further study at Indiana University.
Students wishing to have any COMBINATION of piano, music theory, sight reading and/or vocal development can receive a program of study that meets their individual needs.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LESSON LENGTH: 30-minutes for beginning adults and elementary students up to 5th grade. 45-minutes for intermediate adults and students 5th to 8th grade. 60-minute lessons for more advanced students high school and up.
TEACHING STYLE AND CURRICULUM: ALL: My teaching style is relaxed and nurturing I use positive reinforcement to encourage progress with adults and children. Students are allowed to progress at their own pace.
PIANO: I prefer the Alfred's Basic Piano Library series for my piano students. I find that my students learn more music theory and music reading with this series. If the student has started lessons in a different series, I can work with that as well. I have a large music library that provides a wide selection of music in addition to the Alfred books. I expect most beginning students to learn basic music reading and theory in 3 to 6 months. They should also to be able to play simple tunes in that time. I am an active professional singer, so I have a large library of vocal material at my disposal.
All piano students are REQUIRED to have an instrument to practice on at home. The piano MUST HAVE AT MINIMUM: IF Digital - 88 full sized, weighted keys with polyphonic sound ( at least 10 keys should be able to sound at at the same time) and a sustain pedal, OR - If Accoustic - maintained and properly tuned.
VOICE: I begin my voice lessons with breathing techniques and vocal placement using widely accepted exercises coming from a large body of sources such as: Vaccai, professional level vocal teachers, coaches and directors that I have worked with and learned from over the last 30 years, and the writings of highly acclaimed authors in the vocal field. I also have a wide selection of art song books, oratorio, musical theatre, and opera. My background is classical and musical theatre, but I believe all styles of singing need the basic skills of breathing and vocal placement. I strive to keep voices healthy as well as find each student's most beautiful sound. Most students will see progress in breath control, range, projection and diction in 3 to 6 months.
Repertoire is chosen on an individual basis. Younger students and beginners will be encouraged to not push their voices with material that is too difficult for their individual abilities because singing requires a certain amount of physical endurance. My goal is to find each student's natural sound for whatever style he or she sings.
Voice students are encouraged to bring a recording device to lessons to use for later practice and study.

Hi, I am Justice I'm a director and music producer with approximately 20 years in the music industry. As the son of a preacher, I began music by toying with the musical instruments in my home, which transpired me to play for my father's church at the age of 14. After 8 years of music, I became a member of various musical groups in Ghana/West Africa, and later participated in European tours with famous artists and other European groups. Living in Germany for 15 years, I studied music theory, which tremendously enhanced and polished my musical expertise. I have become a passionate and talented music teacher, with a very unique and effective style of teaching. Today, I teach all ages with the mission to inspire and bring out the music in them. My teaching philosophy is based on my belief that learning is fun! Through practice and help
ful instruction, I will work with you to achieve your goals in a relaxed, and encouraging environment with positivity and praise.
great introduction to knowledge, in right place... thanks.

"What makes a great teacher is not only loving what you do, but also loving the people you're teaching. Jordan D. has a big passion for music, and a big he
art for equipping people for the musical endeavors ahead of them. He is always encouraging and always positive. Even if I feel like I could have done better, he celebrates me where I am, which has taught me to have more confidence while singing, playing guitar or charango, and even glockenspiel. Thanks Jordan for being a great teacher! -Loren Lemon"
"We just wanted to thank you so much for all your help over the last few months in preparing Sara for her recitals. Her talent show at school was last nigh
t and she did fabulously and projected for all to hear and she couldn’t have done it without your teaching!"
"Eric is and outstanding hard working musician with many talents to share and looking forward to working with him & his band and learning more about Bass."
"I came into Jan's class having a different perspective on what the course was going to be. I had the mentality that we were only going to perform and get
tips. But she went beyond that and made me see songwriting and performing in a different way. I want to thank her for making me step way out of my comfort zone. I was uncomfortable, but then it made me change as a person. I'm so thankful for the opportunity that I was even introduced to someone like her. I love how she inspired and cared about the young teens and young adults that she teaches. She is an impact to many and especially me, I will never forget all the advice she gave me!"
"I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Bethany over the years and can't recommend her enough for lessons. She is professional, efficient, and a won
derful musician. She has a unique musical insight and intuition that shows in her performances. Bethany has always been incredible at explaining ideas in both a constructive and clear manner. She is a wonderful, patient, kind teacher, and has inspired many, including myself with her playing and discipline in honing her craft."
"Melanie A. is an extraordinary teacher!
Of the many music teachers out there, I would have to say that Melanie is one with a unique ability to get studen
ts from any background to really understand what it is they need to and learn. To begin, Melanie's upbeat and bright, but professional personality is one that easily clicks with all types of students, making it easy to learn. She is so patient and kind, but just strict enough to get us to do what we need to do. I have seen her sing several times and her great vocal talents and stage performances allow her to give honest, professional, and needed pointers that help students improve (but never in a harsh way). I personally observed this from our band sessions where she is able to teach and give performance advice to a group of students that has greatly improved our ability to be able to be on stage. As a guitar player, she has given me pointers that slightly pushes me out of my comfort zone, but as bettered my stage performance.Just as she capable of teaching groups, she is an excellent one-on-one teacher. It is never hard to ask her for extra help or assistance as her genuine love for singing and music is what fuels to want others to have the same love for it as well. She is always encouraging and constantly reminds you of your abilities to make sure you are never feeling discouraged. Having her as a mentor will never fail to improve your skills in music (whether it be singing or performing on stage) and build your confidence."
"Rachel & Michael Christian are the best instructors I have ever studied under. They make learning fun, I thank both of them. I really enjoy lessons!!!"
"Coren is not only an amazing vocal coach, shes an amazing human being. I started with Coren as a very timid, cautious singer and now I perform all over La
s Vegas and I love what I do! I was afraid that my voice could not improve and that I would never have the power and freedom in my voice that i've always wanted but with some patience and hard work Coren got me there! no matter what type of learner you are, Coren has a technique that will work for you. The first time I sat in on my boyfriend's lesson and I heard how much he had improved I was blown away and I knew I wanted to take lessons. Coren teaches you that everyone can sing and its just a matter of training the muscles you need to do it! For me, thinking about it that way made it a lot less intimidating. She teaches everyone from the kiddos and beginners (she loves kids and they love her!) to the grown ups and pros! No matter how hard i've been on myself coren has never given up on me and I can now say I am not afraid to dream because I know it is possible! I've been with Coren for almost 5 years and for as long as i'm singing she'll be where I stay! If you're serious about singing, Coren will get you wherever you want to go! Thank you for everything Coren!"
